Some of my favorite face oils

Some of my favorite face oils

Style secrets from those ultimate “it” girls, Frenchwomen; where to score the best K-beauty products and services in Seoul; what you need to know about face oils; and a genius makeup bag, in this weeks Fabulous Links!

Frenchwomen spill (almost) everything about why they always look fabulous. (Refinery 29)

If you are planning a trip to Seoul, don’t miss these K-beauty hot spots. (The Zoe Report)

A derm and a facialist set the record straight on face oils. (The Cut) I like this one from Fresh, this one from Nyakio, and these from Skin Owl, btw. And of course, Cover F/X Custom Infusion Drops, which are enough like face oils IMHO. They are pretty emollient.

How genius is this makeup bag?! Hint: You can put it in the washer! (Glamour)

Oh, and I put Charlotte Tilbury’s Lip Cheat lip liner to the test!

Product Review: Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat Lip Liner

When the going gets tough, the tough go to the Charlotte Tilbury counter.

When the going gets tough, the tough go to the Charlotte Tilbury counter.

New Jersey is almost done digging out from Winter Storm Jonas, the epic blizzard that pounded the northeastern United States last weekend. I mentioned I prepared for the storm in true beauty blogger fashion: a Bergdorf Goodman run to buy a Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat lip liner to go with my K.I.S.S.I.N.G. lipstick in Penelope Pink.* The lip liner I got is called Pillow Talk, a light brown with a hint of pink. Penelope Pink and Pillow Talk are part of the Dolce Vita look.

I wore lip liner a few times years ago, but gave up and threw it out because I found it too drying. Times have changed. (And I had tried a different brand…) The Charlotte Tilbury liner was, like the lipstick, very moisturizing. It didn’t dry out my lips and leave them cracked.

I even put it through two acid tests: digging out my car from the storm (see above) and helping a friend move. I wore Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment SPF 15 under it both times, but still. The liner didn’t budge and my lips stayed soft.

One theory behind lip liner, and why Charlotte Tilbury calls her lip liners “Lip Cheat,” is that it is supposed to make your lips appear fuller. I am not sure this liner made my lips look fuller, but I do not have particularly thin lips. However, I can see how you could create the illusion of fuller lips using this liner.

I definitely plan to pick up another Tilbury lip liner at some point. Maybe Kiss N’ Tell, a candy apple red, to go with the So Marilyn lipstick I got for Christmas, and a few other red lipsticks I have. I love a red lip!

Charlotte Tilbury is available at Nordstrom, Bergdorf Goodman, Beautylish, and Net-a-Porter.

Do you use lip liner, either alone or under lipstick? Let me know, and tell me which brands you like in the the comments!

*I got the lipstick for Christmas and I purchased the lip liner. Opinions are my own.

I prepared for the snowstorm the only way a beauty blogger could: I went to Bergdorf Goodman in NYC and bought a Charlotte Tilbury lip liner. It’s a pinky nude called Pillow Talk to go with the Penelope Pink K.I.S.S.I.N.G. lipstick I got for Christmas. I also scored samples of Charlotte’s new skin care products. I will let you know what I think in a future post.

Skin Care: Six Tips for ‘Winterizing’ Your Skin Care Routine from Dr. Christine Choi Kim

Dr. Christine Choi Kim

Dr. Christine Choi Kim

We are supposed to get eight to 14 inches of snow in New Jersey this weekend. Its been really cold here, too. So I thought now would be the ideal time for a post about how to care for your skin in the colder months.

Wind, low humidity, and indoor heat really dry out your skin, Christine Choi Kim, a dermatologist in private practice in Santa Monica , Calif., told me. “So we try to do everything we can to retain moisture,” she said.

Dr. Kim graciously agreed to share her six best tips for ‘winterizing’ your skin care routine and protecting your skin when the temperature plummets:

!. Don’t be afraid of changing to a more hydrating moisturizer, even something oil based, as opposed to a water-based gel. “You might need to go to something a little thicker than what you are used to using,” said Kim. Some people don’t even need to moisturize in the summer months. “I don’t know anyone who is able to use the same products all year round, unless they are living in a climate that is the same all year round,” Kim said.

2. Avoid really hot showers and baths. “It feels really nice, but it can strip the natural oils from your skin,” said Kim. A comfortable temperature is fine, but avoid scalding hot water.

3. Invest in a humidifier. “A humidifier will help your skin and nasal passages retain moisture,” Kim said. When people turn the heat on in the winter, the air gets super dry. Your nasal passages get really dry, too, and you end up getting a bloody nose. Humidifiers can help.

4. Kim said she recommends that her patients apply moisturizer when their skin is slightly damp from the shower or bath. “Applying lotion to damp skin seals in moisture,” she explained.

5. If none of these things work, and you still get rashes because your skin is very dry, Kim recommends an over-the-counter-strength hydrocortisone cream. If that doesn’t cut it, see your derm for a prescription-strength topical cortisone cream.

6. And yes, you still need sunscreen in the winter! Kim said your sunscreen should be a broad spectrum product, meaning it protects against UVA and UVB rays. The easiest thing is to use a tinted moisturizer with SPF, perhaps one that also contains antioxidants, such as a BB or CC cream, Kim said. If you get into the habit of using it not just as sunscreen, but as a moisturizer/makeup, you are more likely to use it regularly. “By using a foundation or moisturizer with SPF, it becomes a part of your makeup routine as well, not just sun protection,” said Kim.

And you absolutely need sunscreen if you ski or snowboard. Sunburn and wind burn are common among winter sports enthusiasts, Kim said. The sun reflects off the snow, giving you that ‘ski bunny’ look, with a burned face except two white circles where the goggles were. Not good.

I personally tend to use facial oils and thicker moisturizers in the winter. I also moisturize in the summer, but I reach for a lighter, multi-tasking product, like Jouer Luminizing Moisture Tint with SPF 20. And I always wear sunscreen, whether it is a tinted moisturizer with SPF or straight sunscreen.

Do you change your skin care routine for winter? If so, how? Let me know in the comments!

Skincare: The Melanoma Foundation of New England and Practice Safe Skin

A yellow automatic sunscreen dispenser at a public park in Boston

An automatic sunscreen dispenser at a public park

I recently got an email from the Melanoma Foundation of New England (MFNE), inviting communities and non-profits to apply for free sunscreen dispensers as part of its Practice Safe Skin initiative. The weather-proof units would be placed in outdoor public spaces, such as beaches, parks, and ski areas. (Businesses and non-profits can also purchase the dispensers as a donation to their employees or communities.)

Deb Girard, executive director of the MFNE, told me the idea first came about in 2014, after the Surgeon General issued a call to action to prevent skin cancer. The Surgeon General issued the call to action because, unlike that of other cancers, incidences of melanoma continue to be on the rise.

So MFNE partnered with the city of Boston and a New Hampshire=based organization called Make Big Change to put 30 sunscreen dispensers around Boston for the Summer 2015 season. Now the MFNE wants to take this program nationwide.

Me in Fla                                                         Me in Florida last April. Note the hat.

I think the use of sunscreen and protective clothing like hats and sunglasses is very important. Sunscreen is basically the first skin care product we ever use. And all the skin care and makeup in the world is not going to prevent skin cancer or reverse or cover up years of sun damage.

Why look older than you have to? I am a total skin care junkie, but my hero product is sunscreen. I never leave the house without it.

As a matter of fact. I think the Practice Safe Skin initiative is so important, I pitched it to my editor at The Doctor Will See You Now. You can read that article here.

We have a park here in Hoboken, called Pier A Park. On nice summer day, its packed with sunbathers. Wouldn’t it be great if Pier A Park had one or two yellow dispensers like the one in the picture, so that people who forgot their sunscreen didn’t have to fry?

The machines are made by a California-based company called Bright Guard. They use a sensor, so you don’t even have to touch a lever or anything to get the sunscreen out. And the sunscreen is a broad-spectrum mineral sunscreen, with six percent zinc and six percent titanium.

Would you use one of these machines if it was available to you when you needed it? Are there places in your community that might benefit from a sunscreen dispenser? Let’s discuss in the comments!

Product Review: Glossier Mega Greens Galaxy Pack and Moisturizing Moon Mask

Glossier Mask Pods and Headband

Glossier Mask Pods and Headband

I tried my Mega Greens Galaxy Pack and Moisturizing Moon Mask this weekend.* It was rainy and damp in New Jersey on Sunday, and very cold and windy yesterday, so the timing was right for a spa day.

The Mega Greens Galaxy Pack has a consistency like thick paste. And it has a clean, earthy scent. I thought it went on pretty sheer. for a facial mask. You wash your face, apply the mask, and then wait for 20 minutes before you wash it off. My skin felt clean, soft, and totally “detox-ed.”

The Moisturizing Moon Mask looks like hand or body lotion in the pod, and feels like it on your skin. According to the information that came with the gift set, you can use it after the Mega Greens Galaxy Pack, but I used it yesterday after a windy, cold walk along the Hoboken waterfront. The Moisturizing Moon Mask really soothed my skin after that experience! You also apply the Moon Mask to a clean face and leave it on for 20 minutes, then wash it off.

Just FYI, each pod contains more than one mask application. I’ve put the remains of the pods in the fridge for next time.

You can buy Glossier masks online. I don’t think they have the mask duo gift set any more though. 🙁

Product Review: Charlotte Tilbury K.I.S.S.I.N.G. Lipstick

Charlotte Tilbury K.I.S.S.I.N.G. mini lipstick charms in So Marilyn (r), Bitch Perfect (C), and Penelope Pink (l)

Charlotte Tilbury K.I.S.S.I.N.G. mini lipstick charms in So Marilyn (r), Bitch Perfect (C), and Penelope Pink (l)

Just five days into 2016, and already I’m in love…with Charlotte Tilbury K.I.S.S.I.N.G. lipstick! Remember how I mentioned those adorable mini lipstick charms in my 2015 Holiday Gift Guide? Well, Santa came through in a major way: I got them for Christmas!*

The color payoff is just right, and the lipstick lasts and lasts. Even through helping my mom put away the Christmas decorations at her house and then going out to dinner. And that was without lip liner. Yes, I prepped my lips with Fresh Sugar Lip Scrub and Sugar Lip Treatment, but still. Major staying power. Major.

The formula is very mositurizing and creamy. My lips never felt dry or like the lipstick was too cakey.

You get three colors in the set: So Marilyn, a rich, deep red; Bitch Perfect, a peachy-pink nude; and Penelope Pink, a beige-pink nude. I love Penelope Pink! It makes my teeth look reeaallly white. I may even get the Lip Cheat lip liner that goes with it, called Pillowtalk.
