Product Review: Charlotte Tilbury Magic Skin Trilogy

CharlotteTilburyminihaulRemember when I prepped for Winter Storm Jonas by buying a Charlotte Tilbury lip liner? Lately, I’ve been using the samples of Charlotte Tilbury’s Magic Skin Trilogy I got with it.* The Trilogy comprises Charlotte’s cult favorite Magic Cream, and her new Magic Eye Rescue and Magic Night Cream, which launched in January. The verdict? I have good news and, well, meh news.

The good news is that I am loving Charlotte’s Magic Cream moisturizer. This cream is one of Charlotte’s flagship products, and now I see why. It goes on smooth, absorbs quickly, and isn’t too heavy at all. My skin really does feel like baby skin: it looks brighter, my skin tone is more even, and my skin is really soft. Charlotte’s Magic Cream is great for under makeup, too.

Unfortunately, the Magic Cream available in the U.S. and Canada doesn’t have SPF, so you will need to add that step. But that shouldn’t be too hard.

I also love Charlotte’s new Magic Eye Rescue Cream. The cream is a little thick, FYI, but I like a thicker eye cream. I find it helps with crow’s feet. (Or I’ve convinced myself it helps.) I have been using the Magic Skin Trilogy for about a week, and really like the way my eye area looks.

The meh news? I am not liking the new Magic Night Cream as much. Its a little thick and gooey for my taste. If your skin is really dry, you may like Magic Night Cream. I just found it too heavy on my skin, versus the Magic Cream for day. Although my skin does look good when I wake up.

I will be buying a jar of Charlotte’s Magic Cream, or I may ask for it for my birthday. I already have several eye creams, but I would definitely buy a full-size Magic Eye Cream. (And knowing me, I probably will pick one up at some point.) Sorry about the Night Cream, Charlotte.

You can buy Charlotte Tilbury’s Magic Skin Trilogy online at Nordstrom.

Product Review: bliss fabgirl leave it to cleavage

blissleaveittocleavageThe folks at bliss invited me to a recent comedy show-as-launch party for leave It to cleavage, bliss spa’s new decollete and bust cream.* The timing was perfect, because I’d noticed my decollete and les girls were looking a little dry and crepe-y.

Bliss calls the pink cream a “souffle,” and souffle like it is! It is very rich, so a little goes a long way. Especially if you’re like me, and your so-called “neck and dec” area tends to be a bit oily and prone to break outs. It has a pretty scent, although I can’t say its my favorite. But you know me, the product scent police.

It really works, though. My neck and dec area looks much smoother and softer after a week or so of using leave it to cleavage. I will definitely continue to use it about once a day. (The instructions on the box say to use it twice a day.)

The stand up comedians were hysterical, btw. (Shout out to Broadway Comedy Club!) And I was lucky enough to sit next to a woman from bliss who told me to keep my eye out for more products in the new fabgirl line!

You can pick up bliss fabgirl leave it to cleavage online. It will be available where bliss products are sold on March 1.

Other companies make neck and dec products, too. I wrote about some of them for Beauty News NYC. Have you tried anything for the sensitive and oft-neglected neck and dec area? Let me know which ones, and if you liked them, in the comments!

Product Review: Hard Candy Cheeky Tints

CheekyTints GroupShotRemember when Hard Candy celebrated its 20th anniversary by re-releasing its iconic nail polishes with the plastic rings? Now the company has come out with Cheeky Tint Sheer Blush Gels, and I’m in love!*

I have been wearing Surfer Babe on repeat since I got it. Its the poppy pink color third from right in the back row. I want to try You’re a Doll, the light pink that’s second from right, this summer. At just $6 a pop, I just may do that!

FYI, the operative word here is “stain.” These blushes give you a sheer wash of color, a pretty flush that lasts and lasts. Even through a marathon doctor’s appointment followed by lunch with Mama Bear.

Blush (or “rouge”) was the first makeup I ever wore. The nuns yelled at me to wash it off, but I didn’t care. I wore blush again the next day anyway. I look absolutely ghost like without it.

Product Review: Bobbi Brown Hydrating Face Cream and Hydrating Eye Cream

Bobbi Brown Skin Care

Bobbi Brown Skin Care

Last week, I redeemed a few of my Sephora VIB points and got a box filled with Bobbi’s Skin Care Must Haves: samples of Bobbi Brown Hydrating Face Cream, Hydrating Eye Cream, Soothing Cleansing Oil, and Skin Smoothing Pore Perfector. What can I say? I’ve always loved Bobbi Brown makeup. so I thought I’d give the brand’s skin care products a try.

I have been using the Hydrating Face Cream and Hydrating Eye Cream every morning and every evening. Hydrating is the operative word. They are pretty rich, particularly the face cream. The fact that they are very hydrating is a good thing, though, especially at this time of year. However, I am not sure how much you’d like these products if your skin tends to be a little oily, or during the warmer months.

The Bobbi Brown web site says the face cream contains sodium hyaluronate and trehalose, which help skin retain moisture; algae extract to moisturize and condition the skin; and caffeine, which is believed to soothe the skin. The eye cream contains aloe vera extract and witch hazel to soothe the skin, and avocado oil, jojoba seed, and squalane to condition the delicate eye area. Both creams contain Bobbi’s Enriched Mineral Water Blend, which the company says revives, hydrates, and balances the skin.

I have also used the Soothing Cleansing Oil a few times. According to the Bobbi Brown web site, the oil contains jasmine flower extract and kikui nut oil to soothe the skin, and a blend of organic oils, including olive, jojoba, and sunflower, to dissolve dirt, old makeup, and other gunk, and leave skin feeling moisturized.

I love the line, “Your cleansing routine never felt more luxurious.” I have to say, I agree. Nothing feels more luxurious on your face than an oil. And this cleansing oil does leave your face feeling moisturized, not tight and dry.

It also really works. A ton of dirt and grime came off on the cotton ball. Again though, I am not sure if you would like this product if your skin tends to be oily, or during warmer weather. In those cases, I am wondering if you might be better off with a micellar water.

You can pick up Bobbi Brown Hydrating Face Cream, Hydrating Eye Cream, and Soothing Cleansing OIl at Sephora.

Gift Guide: Valentine’s Day 2016

Valentine’s Day is almost upon us. I’ve always thought of it as more of a Hallmark thing, but since I love putting together gift guides, I made one for Cupid’s big day. You can always e-mail it to your boo, or leave it where he can see it. Or you may just decide to pick something up for yourself, even if your relationship is a bit “complicated.” You can’t love someone else if you don’t love yourself first, right?!

Since V-Day is about all things red, pink, and bejeweled, we’ll stick with that as our theme.

Red and Pink Kisses

Charlotte Tilbury put together a Perfect Pink Kiss Set, with a Lip Cheat lip liner in Pink Venus, a K.I.S.S.I.N.G. lipstick in Coachella Coral, and a Lip Lustre lip gloss in Portobello Girl. I have heard Coachella Coral described as “Summer In a Tube.” It is definitely on my radar.

CTTHEPERFECTPINKKISS

Charlotte also curated a Perfect Red Kiss Set, with Lip Cheat lip liner in Kiss N’ Tell, K.I.S.S.I.N.G. lipstick in So Marilyn, and Lip Lustre in Red Vixen. Red kisses set the right mood when you’re feeling flirty. And Charlotte Tilbury is all about being flirty.

THEPERFECTREDKISS

The Clinique Kiss, Boom, Pop! lip set has two pink shades and a red shade of Clinique’s new Color Pop combination lipstick/primer, in case you can’t decide between red and pink.

Makeup Bags

You’ll need the right makeup bag to carry these pretty lipsticks around. This cute bag with lipstick kisses is from Charlotte Tilbury.

CTMakeupbag

And maybe you want to cheer up your BFF, whose love life is a mess. The saucy sayings on these makeup clutches from Breakups to Makeup pretty much sum it up: “I would cry but my mascara is designer” and “Losing you hurt but losing my makeup bag would be a tragedy.” Is any man really worth a tube of Benefit Better Than Sex mascara and a box of tissues?

Jewelry

Check out the beautiful vintage heart locket I found on etsy! This seller, 716Buffalos, has lots of beautiful vintage pieces, if that’s your thing. (It’s mine.)

716BuffalosheartlocketI discovered Misa Jewelry while clicking through the Elle Valentine’s Day gift guide. How beautiful are the Fire Coral Moonstone pendant on the left and the Journey Treasure Lagoon necklace on the right?

Do you like getting flowers or jewelry for Valentine’s Day? Or is February 14 just another day on your calendar? Let’s discuss in the comments!

Bath and Body: Microbeads

MicrobeadFreeProductsWhen I saw this recent Well + Good post about microbeads, I was horrified. Polishing your skin or teeth with plastic? Yuck! At least the news hook of the story was that, at the end of December, President Obama signed the Microbead-Free Waters Act of 2015. This law will ban the use of microbeads in soaps and toothpaste by 2017.

Apparently personal care items like body wash, face scrubs, and toothpaste contain small plastic microbeads made of polyethylene as an exfoliant. Plastic grocery bags are made of polyethylene, people. That’s just gross.

The beads in toothpaste can lodge in the gum lines and cause problems, Mark Helm, a dentist in private practice in Beverly Hills, California, told me. The beads are partially there as an abrasive, but mainly they are just there for looks, said Helm. They make the toothpaste look more aesthetically appealing.

And not only are microbeads ineffective exfoliants/abrasives, they pollute our waterways, where they are consumed by marine life, including the fish we eat. The fish mistake the beads for food or plankton. Poor fishies. And poor me, who eats fish as my main source of protein. (I don’t eat beef or pork, and very rarely eat chicken.)

“Microbeads are so tiny, they cannot be filtered when they go down the drain, so they are ending up in our oceans,” Amelia Swaggert, co-founder of California Scrub Company, which makes body scrubs from upcycled coffee grounds, told me. She went on to say more than eight trillion pieces of plastic currently pollute the ocean. So it ends up being eaten by the marine life and, in turn, us.

“its a full circle problem,” said Swaggert. Beyond the pollution issue, people have no idea they are potentially going to be consuming the plastic they washed down the drain.

So I rounded up a few microbead-free alternatives for you. I love the Konjac Exfoliating Sponge from Arithmetic. This sponge is made of konjaku root fiber from northern Japan and is infused with activated bamboo charcoal. And the Coconut Crush Sugar Scrub from Kopari Beauty leaves your skin soft and glow-y, not greasy, and smelling like a pina colada. Very welcome in the dead of winter.* (The Kopari product launches in March, but I found this coconut and almond milk alternative from Ulta.)

Of course, my all-time, microbead-free fave is DermaE Microdermabrasion Scrub. It smells like a refreshing lemon ice, and uses a proprietary blend of Dead Sea salt and volcanic sand as exfoliants, according to the company. It’s available at Target.

FYI, here is a list of companies that have pledged to stop using microbeads in their products, courtesy of Beat the Microbead, an organization that is leading an international campaign to end the use of microbeads in cosmetics. And here is a list of products, organized by country, that still contain microbeads, are phasing out the use of microbeads, or are micro-bead free.

Have you heard of the Microbead-Free Waters Act? Were you aware that the use of microbeads in personal care items was such a significant problem? Let’s discuss in the comments. And if you have found a microbead-free product that works for you, please share!
