Photography: The Everyday Eyecandy 25 Days of Christmas Photo-a-Day Challenge

This month, I took the 25 Days of Christmas Photo a Day Challenge on Instagram, courtesy of blogger and shutterbug extraordinaire LaShawn Wiltz of Everyday Eyecandy. I thought it might be fun to share some of my more successful efforts.

I caught the lights reflecting off the river in this shot.

Pier 1 has such pretty ornaments. Glitter everywhere, though. Sort of a pet peeve of mine.

The Nutcracker at Lincoln Center is my favorite New York City holiday tradition. Nothing, repeat nothing, is cuter than little girls in Christmas dresses twirling like ballerinas in the theater lobby.

The 2016 LoBuono family tree. Papa Bear got a good one this year!

My family went out to eat on Christmas Eve. The restaurant was decorated for the holidays. It looked like Christmas exploded in there.

I got a camera and photography classes for Christmas, so more photos to come in 2017! Now I just need to learn how to actually use my new camera….

Fabulous Links of the Week: Christmas Week

The 2016 LoBuono Family Tree

The 2016 LoBuono Family Tree

I hope everyone had a great Christmas and is enjoying the holiday season! A few things went down in the beauty world right before Christmas: Bobbi Brown announced she is leaving her eponymous beauty brand; 88-years-fabulous Baddie Winkle was named a new face of Urban Decay; and we said goodbye to Zsa Zsa Gabor, who was known more for her husbands and witty sayings than for actually doing anything. Kind of like a mid-20th century Kardashian. And no, I didn’t forget about Carrie Fisher. Without further delay, here is the final Fabulous Links for 2016!

Bobbi Brown announced she is stepping away from her brand to pursue other projects. Bobbi brought us “no-makeup” makeup, and urged women to embrace their natural beauty. I’m sad she is leaving, but I can’t wait to see what she does next. (WWD) My friend Alyssa is a beauty editor who actually had her makeup done by Bobbi! Here’s her post for Town & Country magazine about it. (Town & Country)

Baddie Winkle is an 88-year-old Instagram sensation who was just named a Monthly Muse for Urban Decay. When I’m 88, I hope I’m bad-ass like Baddie! UD’s slogan is Beauty With an Edge. I say, Beauty Never Loses Its Edge. You can follow Baddie on Insta at @baddiewinkle (Allure)

Zsa Zsa Gabor passed away on December 18. She was famous just for being famous before it became a thing. And almost 50 years before Kylie Jenner launched her Lip Kits, Zsa Zsa had her own line of makeup and skin care. (New York Times) As a woman who had been married nine times, she had plenty of thoughts on love and life. Marie Claire collected 35 of her best quotes. (Marie Claire)

Carrie Fisher passed away on December 27, after suffering a heart attack on an airplane. After being diagnosed with bipolar disorder, she was one of the first celebrities who made it OK to talk about mental illness, before Brooke Shields, Kristen Bell, and Demi Lovato. (New York Times)

Her most iconic role was, of course, Princess Leia in the Star Wars films. As the New York Times put it, Leia was a “damsel who could very much deal with her own distress.” Leia’s famous “side buns” hairstyle became an early symbol of feminism and female empowerment. She rocked the look while battling Imperial Stormtroopers and leading the Rebel Alliance. Why wouldn’t it be the coolest? (Allure) I may have to Netflix some early Star Wars this weekend!

This month, I took the 25 Days of Christmas Photo a Day Challenge on Instagram, courtesy of blogger and shutterbug extraordinaire LaShawn Wiltz of Everyday Eyecandy. I posted pics daily inspired by Christmas- and holiday-themed prompts, using the hashtag #eyecandyholidaychallenge. I’ll do separate post on here with the best ones.

Fabulous Links of the Week

Outdoor Christmas lights look pretty in black and white!

Outdoor Christmas lights look pretty in black and white!

It’s almost Christmas! Things have been a little busy in the beauty world, at least here in NYC: Ulta announced it is opening its first ever Manhattan location, and L’Occitane announced the opening of its new flagship in the Flatiron District. And Marcia Kilgore does it again with Beauty Pie, a buyers’ club catering to beauty junkies, while Unilever bought out Jennifer Aniston and the other owners of Living Proof. Here are this week’s Fabulous Links!

Ulta is coming to Manhattan’s tres chic Upper East Side next fall! (WWD)

L’Occitane’s new flagship store features a Smart Beauty Fitting Room, where you can browse and sample products suggested by a digital platform. Very hi-tech! (FashionNetwork.com)

Beauty Pie is the latest brain child of Marcia Gilgore, who brought you Bliss and Soap & Glory. it’s like a Costco for beauty and skincare. For a monthly membership fee, you can buy high-quality cosmetics at no-mark-up factory prices. It’s no-mark-up makeup! (Popsugar)

Unilever, parent company to brands such as Dove, Caress, and Pond’s, bought out Jennifer Aniston and her team at Living Proof. I’m curious about where the consumer products giant will take the brand. (WWD)

This week on the blog, I pulled together a gift guide for the guys on your list. And still looking for gift ideas? My gift guide for her and stocking stuffer guide are here to help!

2016 Gift Guide: For Him

I’m single, so I’m guessing here. But I came up with some holiday gift ideas for the men in your life, and as usual, I tried to vary the price points.

Shaving

The Art of Shaving has two great sets. Check out the Peppermint and Razor Kit and The Four Elements of the Perfect Shave Starter Kit.

Fabulous Links of the Week

Not much has gone on in beauty land this week. (The opening of a Kylie Cosmetics pop-up store in Los Angeles doesn’t count, IMHO.) However, Pantone did name the color of the year for 2017, and it’s …green?! I don’t wear a lot of green, but I’ll dig through my stuff and see what I have. You can read the piece about it in the New York Times here. And enjoy this video. I couldn’t resist!

Since it was a slow week beauty wise, I wanted to share a few of my favorite pics from the 25 Days of Christmas Holiday Challenge.

This week on the blog, I talked about my fun makeover at Blushington and debuted my 2016 Holiday Gift Guide! And here’s the link to my Stocking Stuffer guide.

As I mentioned above, I’m taking the 25 Days of Christmas Photo a Day Challenge on Instagram, courtesy of blogger and shutterbug extraordinaire LaShawn Wiltz of Everyday Eyecandy. 2016 Holiday Gift Guide: For Her

I loved putting together my holiday gift guide and vegan beauty gift guide last year. I had a blast putting this year’s guide together, too! As always, I tried to include things in a range of price points. Who knows? You may even get some ideas about what you want from Santa…

Makeup

I love Bobbi Brown. Her colors are gorgeous and her products go on like a dream and last and last. This ‘Bobbi’s Beauty Book’ palette with six eye shadows, blush, bronzer, and lip gloss takes girls-on-the-go from day to night.

Remember last year, when I got the K.I.S.S..I.N.G. mini lipstick charms from Charlotte TIlbury? This year, Charlotte came out with lipstick charms in her Matte Revolution formula. It includes Red Carpet Red, a classic Holiywood red, Amazing Grace, a pretty pink inspired by Grace Kelly, and Very Victoria, a nod to Victoria Beckham’s signature taupe nude lip.

Urban Decay dropped the mic when they came out with their Naked Ultimate Basics eye shadow palette this fall. The looks the UD’er on your list could create with this are endless.

Makeup Brushes

I think makeup brushes are almost more important than the makeup itself. I mean, makeup washes off with soap and water, right? If you use a good primer and good tools, your makeup will always look amazing.

Check out this basic brush set from Bobbi Brown. Its pretty much everything the makeup maven on your list will need, and they will last her a lifetime. I love my Bobbi Brown blush and eye shadow brushes, and I’ve had them for years.

Main Image - Bobbi Brown Basic Brush Collection ($252 Value)

I get it. Not every one wants to drop $200 on a set of makeup brushes. How about the Sephora Collection Face the Day Full Face Brush Set? Its got a powder brush, foundation brush, large shadow brush, large brow brush, and smudge brush in a trifold case. BTW, I am also loving this ‘Tools of the Trade’ brush set from Sephora.

Nails

I’m obsessed with the Netflix series The Crown. The girl who also binge-watched the adventures of young Queen Elizabeth 2 and her party-hearty kid sister, Margaret, may love the royalty-inspired ‘Her Majesty’s Nail Color Set’ from Deborah Lippmann.

Main Image - Deborah Lippmann Her Majesty Nail Color Set (Limited Edition) ($108 Value)

This EVENTful Nail Lacquer set from butterLODON is another cute option.

Hair

If your niece/daughter/grandaughter is a regular at her local blow out bar, she may be into the Let It Blow! Drybar to Go Ultimate Travel Essentials Kit. You get a travel hair dryer, travel hair brush, dry shampoo, dry conditioner, and hair clips, all in a cute travel pouch.

Another option? The Spread Cheer and Perfect Hair set from Living Proof. You know I love Living Proof . And their dry shampoo won an Allure Best of Beauty award.

Fragrance

You know me and scent. It’s complicated. But if you have a fragrance lover in your life, she may like this Jo Malone London cologne collection. She’ll get five of Jo Malone’s signature scents, and she can mix and match. Bonus: it comes in a pretty gift box. (I suck at gift wrapping and hate it.)

Main Image - Jo Malone™ Cologne Collection

Or if your giftee is like my grandmother who loves scented candles, how about this gorgeous votive candle set from celeb-fave brand diptyque?

If all else fails, Sephora, Nordstrom, and Ulta have tons of great ideas for the beauty buffs on your list. And if you need stocking stuffers, I’ve got you.

I am looking to get more into photography in 2017, so I have asked for a camera and photography lessons for the holidays. What are you hoping to find under the tree?

This month, I’m taking the 25 Days of Christmas Photo a Day Challenge on Instagram, courtesy of blogger and shutterbug extraordinaire LaShawn Wiltz of Everyday Eyecandy. I’ll be posting pics daily inspired by Christmas- and holiday-themed prompts, using the hashtag #eyecandyholidaychallenge.

Makeup: Blushington UES

Its been a cray week. On Monday, I went to a launch event for a new laser used for skin resurfacing. And on Wednesday I had two back-to-back holiday parties in the city.

In the middle of all this, I did revisions for a piece for a new client and wrote a story for a regular client, The Doctor Will See You Now. By Friday, I needed a serious break.

So this morning, I treated myself to a complimentary makeup application at the new Blushington location in New York City on the Upper East Side. I chose the Everyday Pure & Simple look. Here’s the finished result:

My finished look!

My finished look!

My makeup artist Neah used three products that I particularly loved: Jouer Essential Lip Enhancer lip primer; Julie Hewett Los Angeles lipstick in ‘Jacqueline’, a pink fuchsia; and the Stila Eyes Are the Window eye shadow palette in ‘Mind’, which is similar to Urban Decay’s new Naked Ultimate Basics palette. The whole look was very soft and pretty!

The lip enhancer helped my lipstick last and kept my lips moisturized, even while walking around freezing, windy Manhattan. And I love the ‘Jacqueline’ lipstick, inspired by Mrs. Kennedy herself. I think it would be especially nice in the summer with a tan.

Blushington sells the products they use. It took major self control to get out of there without buying anything! You can learn more about Blushington here.

I rarely get my makeup done by a pro, except for a real treat. (The full makeup service, normally $65, was free to celebrate the opening of the new location! I love free!) Do you get your makeup done often? If so, have you picked up any tips or tricks along the way that you incorporated into your regular routine? Let’s talk makeup hacks in the comments!

Fabulous Links of the Week

I love the look of maroon bows!

I love the look of maroon bows!

It sure is looking Christmas-y around here! See below for some pretty wreath-inspired manis for holiday parties! And check out this young makeup artist’s epic holiday eye makeup. Also, a wine-inspired hair care line and an all-girl garage where you can get a mani/pedi while your car gets serviced, in this week’s Fabulous Links!

I love a cute Christmas manicure! I may want to rock one of these looks for the holiday events I have coming up this week. (Yahoo! Style)

How gorgeous is this snow globe eye makeup from makeup artist Ali Nordahl? She’s just 17 years old and self taught! You can see some of her other creations here. (Allure)

The hair care line Vine de la Vie contains polyphenols, the good-for-you compounds in red wine. The company says polyphenols can slow down hair’s aging process. Anything based on wine is OK by me! (Allure)

The lovely lady mechanics (shecanics) at Girls Auto Clinic Repair Center in Upper Darby, Penn., will fix your ride while you get pampered at the So Clutch Beauty Bar. I think this business model is brilliant! Why not kill two birds with one stone? (Plus, I hate the turbo-volume daytime TV they play at the place I get my car serviced.) (CBS Philadelphia)

This week on the blog, I got the scoop on SocialVend, found some cool stocking stuffers for the beauty lovers on your list, and shared my fave pics from my #naphopomo challenge on Instagram.

Photography: The #naphopomo Challenge

In November, I took the National Photo Posting Month (#naphopomo) challenge on Instagram. I took the theme gratitude, seeing as how it was close to Thanksgiving and all. Basically, you had to post a photo a day using the hashtag #naphopomo. Since the theme was gratitude, I also used hashtags like #dailythanksgiving, #dailygratitude, #givethanksdaily, #30daysofthanksgiving, and #30daysofgratitude. See where I’m going with this?

To kick off the weekend, I thought it might be fun to share a few of my fave #naphopomo photos:

2016 Holiday Gift Guide: Stocking Stuffers

This year I wanted to get a jump start on my holiday gift guides. I thought I’d begin with some cute stocking stuffers for the beauty buffs on your list. At under $30, they’re also perfect for all your gift exchange and Secret Santa needs.

For the mani/pedi queen…

If you have a friend or co-worker who loves to pamper herself with an at-home mani/pedi, she’ll love the Candy Cane (buy it here) and Soft Metals Collection (buy it here) polish sets from Nails, Inc., available at Sephora.
