Fabulous Links of the Week: Memorial Day Edition

Happy Memorial Day!

Can you believe summer has (unofficially) started? I can’t! While getting ready for the long weekend and trying to master Adobe Lightroom, I did come across interesting beauty news.

Jamie O’Banion hit paydirt last year when she brought GloPRO, an at-home microneedling tool, to market. It is currently available on HSN and at a few high-end retailers (Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus), but will be available at Sephora and Harrod’s later in the year. This great profile in Forbes details O’Banion’s journey to skincare success. (Forbes)

Estee Lauder just launched a virtual reality try-on tool for it’s Estee Lauder flagship brand on the brand’s web site and mobile web site. I’ll have to try it out and post screen shots! (WWD)

Has anyone ever tried microneedling? It is supposed to be amazing for your skin. Has anyone ever used one of those virtual reality try on tools that are so popular now? Tell me about your experiences with both (or either) in the comments!

This year, I’m doing the Eyecandy Project 52 photography challenge. Every week, we have to take a picture inspired by a prompt, such as From Above. Some prompts are relevant to the time of year, some are more evergreen. I’ll post my more successful efforts here about once a quarter. Check out the Q1 highlights here.

Fabulous Links of the Week

Thought these were pretty! For sale at a local bodega.

Next weekend is Memorial Day! Can you believe it? How time flies! This week in the beauty world, Urban Decay announced it was launching a Naked Perfume Oil on June 3 (for Sephora VIB Rouge members) and June 7 on the Urban Decay web site. (Elle) And for you mani/pedi fans, Essie has declared June 1 (my birthday!!!) National Nail Polish Day! I may be celebrating the big 4-@#$ with a trip to the groomer. (WWD)

This week on the blog, I shared my frustration about not being able to establish and stick to a regular Sunday skin care routine. If you have any tips to get me started and keep me motivated, I’m listening!

Skincare: Sunday Ritual Rant

Just a few of the Sheet Masks of Shame

Why?! Why can’t I get into using the sheet masks and other skincare masks currently gathering dust in my home office? ARRGH! I mean, I use sunscreen regularly, and I have skin care regimens I use in the morning and evening. (I rotate products in and out.)

But I just can’t seem to drag myself to my office to go through them, and use one every Sunday. I’d rather do a little house work, read a book, then take a nap. (I’m the kind of person who keeps a list of the books she wants to read.) Oh, and on Sundays I put together the Fabulous Links. (Those will be back to a regular Sunday posting schedule this weekend, I promise.)

My other thing to do is grab my camera and take photos. I actually started a 3-session workshop in Adobe Lightroom last night. (Wish me luck.) So maybe those things are my form of “self care ” or “me time,” versus #skincaresunday and a sheet mask selfie.

Some people meditate, some do yoga, some do sheet masks, and some people are into DIY mani/pedis. Tell me. How do you define self care? What does your “me time” look like? Let’s talk R&R in the comments!

Fabulous Links of the Week: Mother’s Day 2017

Dinner with my family – Mother’s Day 2017

I hope all you mommas had a great Mother’s Day. I did! My family and I had a nice dinner together to celebrate. (See pic above.) Maybe you can talk celeb makeup artist Val Garland into doing your mom’s makeup. She just got the gig as global makeup director at L’Oreal Paris. (WWD) Be sure to check out the photo gallery. Ms. Garland has come up with some cool, vintage-inspired looks! And some avant-garde ones, too. It will be interesting to see what Garland and L’Oreal create together.

This whole Mother’s Day thing has me thinking: What beauty secrets did you learn from your mom? I don’t know about beauty secrets, per se, but my mom instilled in me a love for blush, soft pink lipstick, and blue eyeliner. Very traditional colors. To this day, I still reach for pinks, nudes, and taupes, and I have eyeliner pencils in every shade of blue. And I own more blush than I could wear in ten lifetimes.

The nuns at my elementary school would yell at me for wearing blush. I didn’t care. But I didn’t experiment with eye shadow until I was north of 35. Go figure.

So what did you learn about makeup/beauty from you mom/grandmother/aunt? Let’s spill family beauty secrets in the comments!

Have a great week! xo

Fabulous Links of the Week

I met Romero Jennings At The Makeup Show NYC! I interviewed him and Johnny Weir a while ago about MAC’s Glitter & Ice collection for holiday 2011.

I was at The Makeup Show NYC this weekend! As always, it was a great time, with inspiring keynotes, photo ops, makeup, a press preview led by the always hilarious James Vincent, and did I mention…makeup?! I’ll try to get a pic up on Instagram ASAP of some highlights from the goody bag. This year there was really good skin care, and a cool Kat von D lip liner.

While I ran around The Metropolitan Pavilion, where the show was held, beauty news still happened elsewhere in the world. Remember my friends at Memebox? They announced this week they are no longer selling K-beauty products in the U.S., in order to focus more on K-beauty content, such as product reviews and tutorials. But fear not, K-beauty fans. You will still be able to buy Memebox’s K-beauty finds through Amazon. (WWD) (Fashion Network)

And Johnson & Johnson must pay the largest settlement ever in a series of law suits claiming it’s Johnson’s Baby Powder, which is formulated with talc, causes ovarian cancer. In this case, J&J must pay a Virginia woman $110.5 million.  Last year, the personal care giant was ordered to pay plaintiffs in similar cases $70.1 million, $72 million, and $55 million. I’ll just stick to sprinkling it in my shoes. (Allure)

Bath and Body: Le Petit Marseillais Shower Creme

I’m down to try anything French, especially French beauty products. The French know their stuff. So I couldn’t wait to try France’s popular Le Petit Marsellais line of body care, which recently launched in the U.S.*

According to parent company Johnson & Johnson, Le Marseillais started as a small hand-made soap company in Provence. One of the brand’s first products was olive oil soap sold in a few local pharmacies. The ingredients in Le Petit Marseillais are inspired by the South of France: lavender, orange blossom, and nectarine.

“The spirit of Le Petit Marseillais goes beyond ingredients,” Dawn Kidd, senior marketing director at Johnson & Johnson, Consumer Inc., said in a statement. “These products capture an entire way of life in the South of France: the sun-kissed countryside, vibrant colors, and simple pleasures of Provence.”

I am currently loving the Cotton Milk & Poppy extra-gentle shower creme. It smells like clean laundry, and leaves your skin feeling really soft. Apparently poppies bloom in the summer in the Mediterranean.

My other fave? White Peach & Nectarine extra-gentle shower gel. I’ll be smelling yummy this summer!

Le Petit Marseillais is available at stores like Walmart, Target, and CVS. As a matter of fact, according to the press materials, Walmart exclusively carries a line of 17 Le Petit Marseillais products, including hand soaps, body lotions, and a bar soap. The best part is that all these items are priced between $3.99 and $7.97. How wallet friendly is that?!

Tell me. Have any of your favorite foreign beauty products made their way stateside? You know me and K-beauty. And I’ll always come back to Nuxe body oil from France. Let’s talk imported beauty in the comments!
