Photography: New York City Skyline Photo Shoot, Part 1

Last week was Pride Week here in New York City. Pride Week wraps up with a fireworks display in front of One World Trade Center, aka the Freedom Tower.

Every year, my photography teacher runs a Skyline at Night photography workshop on the last day of Pride Week, so students can practice photographing the NYC skyline at dusk and the fireworks display once it gets dark. Of course, I joined in the fun!

I wanted to share my favorite shots of the Empire State Building and One WTC lit up in rainbow colors for Pride Week, and a few pics of the fireworks. If you’ve never photographed fireworks before (I hadn’t) they can be tricky to capture, but I got some good pictures. Enjoy!

My photography friend Kelly posted her fireworks pic on Instagram with this quote from one of my favorite movies, Love Actually: “If you look for it, I’ve got a feeling you’ll find that LOVE actually is all around.” Well said!

I’ll post the more evergreen skyline photos a little later this week.

This year, I’m doing the Eyecandy Project 52 photography challenge. Every week, we have to take a picture inspired by a prompt, such as From Above. Some prompts are relevant to the time of year, some are more evergreen. I’ll post my more successful efforts here about once a quarter. Check out the Q1 highlights here.

The Empire State Building, as seen through my new 55-210 mm lens!

Summertime, and the living is easy! I was out in the park recently, and took some photos with my new 55-210 mm lens. The above shot of the Empire State Building is my fave.

Meanwhile in beauty news, Beauty Pie is launching an affordable skin care line, Brooke Shields is getting back together with Calvin Klein, and Estee Lauder has named a new global beauty director who is French. And very cool.

Beauty Pie announced this week it is launching a skincare line with everything priced between $5 and $13. The six-month-old company was started by Marcia Kilgore of Bliss and Soap & Glory fame. For a monthly fee of $10, Beauty Pie lets members buy unbranded makeup with no retail markup. Think mascara for $2! Now, they are selling skincare. I may just have to try it out! (Racked)

Remember the 80s, when nothing came between Brooke Shields and her Calvins? Well, Shields and the company have announced they are collaborating on an as-yet-unspecified new project. Stay tuned…(Fashion Network)

In an effort to attract a hipper, younger customer, Estee Lauder has announced it has named French makeup artist, social media star, and all-around It girl Violette as the new global beauty director for its namesake brand. Violette will be working closely with Estee Lauder’s global creative director Matthew Parr. The Estee your mother and grandmother loved could use a drink from the fountain of youth. Putting Kendall Jenner on a billboard just isn’t enough. (WWD)

Skincare: Lime & Lotus Organics Daily Face Cream

I recently got an email from Dr. Stephanie Zgraggen, a holistic medicine practitioner from Charleston, SC. Zgraggen told me that as a holistic medicine doctor, she wants to recommend skincare products that are as natural as possible to her patients. However, she found products on the market contained too many harmful chemicals for her liking. So she created her own all-natural skincare line, Lime & Lotus Organics.

The line includes a peppermint facial toner, charcoal face mask, lavender sugar scrub, and a face cream. Zgraggen was nice enough to send me a jar of the face cream.* It feels great on my skin, and smells delicious! I love to smell it as I lie in bed at night and read before I go to sleep.

The Daily Face Cream contains shea butter, Bulgarian rose essential oil, rosemary essential oil, and coconut oil. In other words, all things that are great for your skin. And Zgraggen has generously offered you a deal! Between now and July 31, type in the code CLOBUONO at checkout, and get 20 percent off your order at Lime and Lotus Organics!

If anyone tries any of the other products in the line, please let me know. The facial toner and the sugar scrub sound incredible!

Fabulous Links of the Week: Father’s Day Edition

A dad and his girls! With my dad and sister at Father’s Day dinner.

Happy Father’s Day 2017! Almost half of 2017 is in the books, can you believe it? Time flies… While you were getting ready to pay homage to your old man, Estee Lauder announced it is expanding it’s collaboration with Victoria Beckham and Kim Kardashian West announced she is launching a new beauty line.

Victoria Beckham and Estee Lauder announced this week they are expanding their successful makeup collaboration to double it’s original size. The 10 hero products from the initial collaboration and 18 new products will be available this fall. This isn’t your grandma’s Estee Lauder! (WWD)

Love them or hate them, the Kardashian-Jenner women really know beauty, so anything they do beauty-wise is big news. Kim Kardashian West announced this week she is launching her own makeup line, KKW Beauty, and a fragrance. As someone who follows the beauty industry, I’ll admit I am curious to see what North and Saint’s mom comes up with, and the reviews KKW Beauty gets from editors and bloggers. The fun kicks off on June 21 with creme highlight and contour kits in four shades: light, medium, dark, and deep dark. (WWD)

This week on the blog, I shard my latest find, Beauty So Clean makeup sanitizing products!

Makeup: Beauty So Clean

Some goodies from Beauty So Clean

At The Makeup Show last month, I found myself sitting with Nancy Crossley, founder of Beauty So Clean, a line of makeup and makeup brush sanitizing products. While we hung out at brunch, Nancy and her daughter told me the story behind Beauty So Clean.

Nancy is a makeup artist who (naturally) wanted the makeup and brushes in her kit to be sanitary for her clients. Unfortunately, the only way to really sanitize the stuff was with alcohol, which could really dry out the makeup and brushes.

So Nancy consulted with her fellow makeup artists and others in the makeup industry, and Beauty So Clean was born. The product range includes makeup sanitizing wipes and sprays, brush cleaners, and even a false eye lash cleaner.

I need to go through my makeup stash, and weed out all the old stuff that isn’t working for me anymore. Nancy was kind enough to gift me a bag of Beauty So Clean products when I stopped by her booth at the show, so I will be using those on what I keep.*

You know, those lipsticks I love, but only wear in the summer. Blushes I haven’t worn in a while, but are flattering on my skin tone, so I want to add them back into the rotation. That kind of thing.

The Beauty So Clean products will be great for my mascara and eyeliner, too. I have GPC, or global papillary conjunctivitis. I am hyperallergic to the bacteria that builds up on eyeliner, mascara, and contact lenses. I have to be diligent about replacing my mascara every three months, and I wear disposable contact lenses.

Beauty So Clean will be a big help with keeping my eye makeup clean, so I don’t get pink eye. Cool!

Tell me. How do you sanitize your makeup? Do you sanitize your makeup? It never really occurred to me to do so, because I am not a makeup artist, so I am the only one using my makeup. But after talking with Nancy, I need to rethink that. Let’s talk cleanliness in the comments!

Fabulous Links of the Week

Enjoying a summer night in NYC at a rooftop bar with my friend Laurie.

Happy Monday! Dang, this weekend was a hot one here in NJ and NYC! Lately, beauty news has been pretty hot, too. Urban Decay announced the launch of its new Urban Decay Naked Heat eye shadow palette, JLo posted a makeup-free selfie, and Salma Hayek is launching a line of smoothies and acai bowls, some of which can be used as a face mask.

Urban Decay is welcoming a new member to the Naked family. Get ready for the Urban Decay Naked Heat palette. The palette features terra cottas, coppers, and oranges. If you like your eye shadows in warmer tones, brace yourself. (Cooler tones look better on me. Boo.) The palette drops on June 30. (Allure)

Jennifer Lopez posted a makeup-free selfie from backstage in Las Vegas. How is this woman freaking 48 years old?!? (Glamour)

Salma Hayek collaborated with Juice Generation on Blend It Yourself, a line of smoothies and acai bowls delivered to your door all prepped and ready for you to well, blend it yourself! The line includes three Beauty Blends that can either be drunk as a smoothie or applied to your face as a skin care mask. Sip or slather. Yum! (WWD)

This week on the blog, I shared my Sephora birthday haul and my picture story about our local animal shelter. Also, I did a story for The Doctor Will See You Now about sunscreen. You are remembering to apply sunscreen, aren’t you?!

Photography: Liberty Humane Society Picture Story

For some weekend fun, I wanted to share my final project for photography class. We had to tell a picture story. I chose to do my project on Liberty Humane Society in Jersey City, NJ. Animal welfare is a cause close to my heart, and I have had rescue cats since I was in second grade.

I used to volunteer at LHS, but stopped going because it made me so sad to see all those animals in need of good homes. LHS is not the cheeriest place, but the staff and volunteers do everything possible on behalf of the animals.

It took a long time, and it was hard for me to share this. I don’t know why. The pics are OK, although my photography has evolved since March, when these were taken. And I have since been introduced to Adobe Lightroom digital photography software. (Lightroom, BTW, is the greatest invention since lip liner.)

Maybe I was reluctant to post this because I adopted two female cats, Mesa and Pashmina, from LHS, and I am still grieving Pashmina’s death last August. Or maybe it’s that I feel strongly about rescue, and wanted to do the story justice.

But anyway, here it is. I had so much fun putting it together. Enjoy!

LHS is located in Liberty State Park in Jersey City, NJ.

LHS exists in what was once a municipal garage.

A closeup of the mural on the building.

Volunteers are so important. A walk in the sun can make a shelter dog’s day.

The cattery is up a flight of stairs in what must have been the garage office.

Appropriate tortitude!

The kennel in located in the former garage motor pool.

Seriously?! Are you going to say no to that face?

Many animals = tons of laundry

Adoptions = Happy Tails

Sephora Mini-Birthday Haul

A little b’day retail therapy

As I mentioned on Sunday, last week was my birthday! So of course, I went to Sephora for a little treat and my VIB birthday gift.* My treat? Kat von D’s new Everlasting Lip Liner in Smiths. It’s a pretty orange-coral that will be great for summer. I got the liner in A Go-Go in The Makeup Show 2017 goody bag. It’s very pretty, too, but I wanted something a little softer.

For my birthday gift, I had a choice, a Tarte mini Amazonian clay 12-hour blush and lip gloss or Caudalie Vinoperfect Radiance Serum and Vinosource Moisturizing Sorbet. I went for the Caudalie. The Tarte makeup was pretty, but at my advanced age, I need all the help I can get.

You put the serum on, followed by the moisturizer, twice a day. So far, I am loving both products. They feel nice and light for this time of year.

I saw so many gorgeous things in Sephora, it was hard to limit myself. But I did! I started thinking I might want to pick up a few lip liners for summer. Tell me. Do you plan to get a few things for the new season? Let’s talk summer makeup updates in the comments!

Fabulous Links of the Week

I was in a reflective mood…

It was my birthday week. I’m another year wiser! (I hope.) While I was turning the page on another year, Mariah Carey announced her beauty line is definitely happening and Selma Blair shut down the shamers of her gray roots.

Apparently, Mariah Carey and her manager Stella Bulochnikov are starting a beauty line, complete with it’s own brick-and-mortar store in Beverly Hills. Hopefully, it will launch in time for the holidays when “All I Want for Christmas Is You” is on repeat. Mariah’s collaboration with M.A.C. was such a success, I can’t wait to check it out. (New York Post) (Allure)

Selma Blair? #grayhairdontcare! Blair took to Instagram to clap back in the best way at those daring to throw shade at her peek-a-boo roots. What’s a little gray among friends? (Allure)

This week on the blog, I reviewed DermaE’s Vitamin C Skincare Collection.

Product Review: DermaE Vitamin C Skincare Collection

DermaE Vitamin C Skincare

Between my trip to Florida and the unseasonably cold spring we had in New Jersey, my skin looks a little dull and washed out. The folks at DermaE came to the rescue with their new Vitamin C Collection.*

You know I love DermaE. I’ve talked about it here and here. I’m still obsessed with microdermabrasion scrub! This time around, I tried the Vitamin C Micellar Cleansing Water, Concentrated Serum, and Revitalizing Moisturizer.

The micellar water and moisturizer contain probiotics and rooibos, a tea made from a South African plant that is full of antioxidants. The line also includes a night cream with probiotics and rooibos, but I did not try it.

The serum contains hyaluronic acid, which is super moisturizing: it can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water. All three products contain what the company claims is a very stable form of vitamin C that won’t evaporate or change it’s composition before absorbing into your skin.

My skin looks great. No more dull, washed out look or post-Florida sunspots for me!

You can pick up DermaE at Ulta.

How do you brighten up your skin when it looks a little dull after a winter indoors? Let’s talk getting your skin ready for summer in the comments!
