2016 Holiday Gift Guide: For Her

I loved putting together my holiday gift guide and vegan beauty gift guide last year. I had a blast putting this year’s guide together, too! As always, I tried to include things in a range of price points. Who knows? You may even get some ideas about what you want from Santa…

Makeup

I love Bobbi Brown. Her colors are gorgeous and her products go on like a dream and last and last. This ‘Bobbi’s Beauty Book’ palette with six eye shadows, blush, bronzer, and lip gloss takes girls-on-the-go from day to night.

Remember last year, when I got the K.I.S.S..I.N.G. mini lipstick charms from Charlotte TIlbury? This year, Charlotte came out with lipstick charms in her Matte Revolution formula. It includes Red Carpet Red, a classic Holiywood red, Amazing Grace, a pretty pink inspired by Grace Kelly, and Very Victoria, a nod to Victoria Beckham’s signature taupe nude lip.

Urban Decay dropped the mic when they came out with their Naked Ultimate Basics eye shadow palette this fall. The looks the UD’er on your list could create with this are endless.

Makeup Brushes

I think makeup brushes are almost more important than the makeup itself. I mean, makeup washes off with soap and water, right? If you use a good primer and good tools, your makeup will always look amazing.

Check out this basic brush set from Bobbi Brown. Its pretty much everything the makeup maven on your list will need, and they will last her a lifetime. I love my Bobbi Brown blush and eye shadow brushes, and I’ve had them for years.

I get it. Not every one wants to drop $200 on a set of makeup brushes. How about the Sephora Collection Face the Day Full Face Brush Set? Its got a powder brush, foundation brush, large shadow brush, large brow brush, and smudge brush in a trifold case. BTW, I am also loving this ‘Tools of the Trade’ brush set from Sephora.

Nails

I’m obsessed with the Netflix series The Crown. The girl who also binge-watched the adventures of young Queen Elizabeth 2 and her party-hearty kid sister, Margaret, may love the royalty-inspired ‘Her Majesty’s Nail Color Set’ from Deborah Lippmann.

This EVENTful Nail Lacquer set from butterLODON is another cute option.

Hair

If your niece/daughter/grandaughter is a regular at her local blow out bar, she may be into the Let It Blow! Drybar to Go Ultimate Travel Essentials Kit. You get a travel hair dryer, travel hair brush, dry shampoo, dry conditioner, and hair clips, all in a cute travel pouch.

Another option? The Spread Cheer and Perfect Hair set from Living Proof. You know I love Living Proof . And their dry shampoo won an Allure Best of Beauty award.

Fragrance

You know me and scent. It’s complicated. But if you have a fragrance lover in your life, she may like this Jo Malone London cologne collection. She’ll get five of Jo Malone’s signature scents, and she can mix and match. Bonus: it comes in a pretty gift box. (I suck at gift wrapping and hate it.)

Or if your giftee is like my grandmother who loves scented candles, how about this gorgeous votive candle set from celeb-fave brand diptyque?

If all else fails, Sephora, Nordstrom, and Ulta have tons of great ideas for the beauty buffs on your list. And if you need stocking stuffers, I’ve got you.

I am looking to get more into photography in 2017, so I have asked for a camera and photography lessons for the holidays. What are you hoping to find under the tree?

This month, I’m taking the 25 Days of Christmas Photo a Day Challenge on Instagram, courtesy of blogger and shutterbug extraordinaire LaShawn Wiltz of Everyday Eyecandy. I’ll be posting pics daily inspired by Christmas- and holiday-themed prompts, using the hashtag #eyecandyholidaychallenge.

beautyblender sunny x Supergoop! for Alex’s Lemonade Stand

beautyblender sunny x Supergoop!

beautyblender sunny x Supergoop!

I mentioned the beautyblender x Supergoop! collaboration to benefit Alex’s Lemonade Stand last week. Well, I decided to do a deep dive and find out more, because Alex’s Lemonade Stand is such a great cause.

I spoke with Jeff Baxter, community engagement manager at Alex’s Lemonade Stand. He said that beautyblender first approached the foundation because the company believes strongly in the work it is doing to raise funds for pediatric cancer research.

“I know beautyblender and Supergoop! feel they can connect their customer base with our mission,” Baxter said.

Using a beautyblender makes sunscreen application to kids’ noses and ears a lot easier, the company said in a press release. It’s a bargain, too. For $20, you get the cult classic beautyblender (a $20 value) AND a travel-size Supergoop! sunscreen (a $16 value). So you are basically getting a free high-quality sunscreen. And 20 percent of the sales go to Alex’s Lemonade Stand. You can buy the limited edition set on the beautyblender web site here.

I wasn’t familiar with Alex’s Lemonade Stand, but Baxter was happy to share the organization’s backstory with me. Alexandra “Alex” Scott was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a childhood cancer, when she was not quite a year old. At the age of four, she received a stem cell transplant after doctors discovered her cancer was growing again.

After her treatment, Alex told her parents she wanted to set up a lemonade stand in her front yard, and give the proceeds to her doctors and what she called “her hospital.” Alex wanted other sick kids to feel as good as she did.

The first lemonade stand raised $2,000. The Scott family continued setting up lemonade stands in their yard every year, and donating the money to cancer research. Word spread about these lemonade stands, and soon other people were setting up stands, too.

It grew to the point where when Alex was seven years old, she told a reporter she wanted to raise a million dollars. The reporter said, “How do you think you can do that?” Alex replied that if everyone across the country had a lemonade stand, she thought she could reach her goal.

Sadly, Alex passed away at the age of eight. However, before she died, she made her million dollar goal. Alex’s Lemonade Stand was born out of that, Baxter said. At this point, the organization has funded over 650 research projects and raised over $127 million.

Now back to beauty. You know I love Supergoop! Have you ever used the beautyblender? Every makeup artist and beauty editor I know of raves about it. Its even won a few Allure Best of Beauty awards.

Summer 2016 Favorites: Nuxe Dry Oil, Alterna BB Beach Balm, Brush-On Block Sunblock, and NARS Hot Sand

Summer 2016 Favorites..So Far!

Summer 2016 Favorites..So Far!

Summer is about at the halfway point, so I thought I’d share a few of the things I’m loving, but haven’t mentioned here before.

Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse Dry Oil I love using dry oil after a shower when its really humid out, because it’s lighter than lotion. Nuxe is a French pharmacy brand, and always chic French girls supposedly love this dry oil. You can put it in your bath or even in your hair or on your face, but I haven’t tried that yet. Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse All-Purpose Dry Oil is available at Target.**

Alterna Bamboo Beach BB Beach Balm for Hair This silky cream is like beachy waves in a tube! It provides moisture, light hold, and UV protection. I put it on the ends of my clean, damp hair after I comb it out, and voila, instant mermaid hair! Plus, it smells incredible. You can pick up Alterna Bamboo Beach BB Beach Balm at Sephora.*

Brush-On Block Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30 This mineral powder sunscreen is great for wearing under makeup. It feels light, which is important if you want sun protection, but don’t want anything too heavy because of the heat. You can buy Brush-On Block Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30 on Amazon.*

NARS Hot Sand Collection: Hot Sand/Orgasm Blush Duo and Hanamachi Kabuki Brush I’ve pretty much been using this blush/bronzer compact and kabuki brush non-stop since I got them. I love how I can use NARS Orgasm to set my Chosungah-22 cushion blush for a pink flush or my Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge for Lips and Cheeks for a peachy look. And how cute is the kabuki brush? The Hot Sand collection is limited edition, but the blush duo and the kabuki brush are available at narscosmetics.com.*

So tell me. What products have you discovered this summer? Let’s talk summer favorites in the comments!

Product Review: Revlon 2016 Makeup Brush Collection

2016 Revlon Makeup Brushes

2016 Revlon Makeup Brushes (l. to r.) Blending brush, Blush brush, All Over Shadow brush, and Crease Shadow brush

The generous folks at Revlon just sent me a BMW.* I’m kidding people! Actually, they sent me four makeup brushes from a collection Revlon developed with BMW Group subsidiary Designworks.

New makeup brushes are almost as good as a 5-series sedan, and I can’t trash them while merging onto 495 in Weehawken. I got the Blending brush, Blush brush, Crease Shadow brush, and All Over Shadow brush.

So far, I have used the Blush brush. The ExpertFX bristles are really soft. They picked up the perfect amount of product from the pan and distributed it smoothly and evenly on the apples of my cheeks.

The April issue of Marie Claire has a few facts about the Blush brush on page 148. Apparently, the brush head has about 28,500 bristles that are inset into the handle for easy cleaning.

A close up of the Diamond Grip handle

That Diamond Grip handle is weighted with 9 grams of steel to balance the brush head. And it contains high-grade ABS plastic for easy, comfortable use. The plastic also keeps the brush from rolling on flat surfaces. (Trust me: none of these brushes roll.)

I can’t wait to try the eye shadow brushes, especially the Crease Shadow brush, which has a tapered head. The brush I have been using in my crease is an angled brush, so I am curious to compare the results. And since I don’t have the steadiest hand when applying eye makeup, the high-tech handles will really be put to the test.

This post on Allure‘s Beauty Reporter blog singled out the Contour brush, which also has a tapered head like the Crease Shadow brush. This feature is apparently uncommon among drugstore makeup brushes. Of course, I wanted to get one.

I went to three different stores that sell Revlon makeup, but none of them carried the brushes. However, I did some Internet research, and the 13 brushes in the 2016 Revlon Brush Collection are available online at Target. Each brush is less than $20, btw.

Have you tried the Revlon x BMW makeup brushes? I think they have been available for a few months. What makeup brushes do you use? Let me know in the comments!
