Fabulous Links: Heatwave Edition

Like all good New Yorkers, Patience wears his mask!

Fortitude wears his mask, too!

So the Summer of ‘Rona continues. I hope everyone is staying safe and wearing their masks, like Patience and Fortitude at the New York Public Library (see above).

We are having a heatwave here is New Jersey. However, nail and hair salons (Hallelujah!) are open, and socially distant, outdoor exercise classes have begun. I am all about outdoor yoga.

I recently shared two items from Women’s Wear Daily that got some attention on Blend and Swatch, the Allure Facebook group, and on my own FB feed, so I wanted to share them here.

The first article is about how designer and Christian Dior creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri presented her fall 2020 haute couture collection: in miniature scale on doll-sized mannequins, in a short film by Italian director Matteo Garrone! Chiuri came up with this genius idea when the fall haute couture shows were cancelled due to the pandemic. The pandemic has forced people to think outside the box, and this idea is my fave example of that creativity! I hope the miniature, Surrealist-inspired collection goes on tour or on exhibit in a museum, so many people can enjoy it. I’d go see it. (WWD)

The second item announced Dior’s collaboration with Vespa scooters. If you’re ready for La Dolce Vita, the limited-edition Vespa 946 Christian Dior with matching accessories will be available in spring 2021 in Dior stores worldwide. How chic would you look zipping around your ‘hood on that thing? (WWD)

And as a bonus link, I read recently that Kanye West’s Yeezy brand is doing a collection with the Gap. The Yeezy Gap line will debut next spring at stores and online. Kanye seems to be pretty fashion savvy, so this collection should be interesting, maybe even a little edgy. You could even wear it while tooling around on your Dior-themed Vespa! (Fashion Network)

Fabulous Links: Pandemic Edition

A little pandemic humor, courtesy of our local Athleta.

This coronavirus situation is really getting crazy! Everything is canceled or closed. I was supposed to go to Scottsdale, AZ, for a meeting. Canceled. I had planned to see Diana: The Musical on Broadway. Canceled, too. All the gyms and yoga studios in Hoboken are now closed, including the gym and yoga studio I go to. And we have a 10p to 5a curfew.

A sign of the times.

As I mentioned in my last post, blogging and photography are my therapy through all this, so I’ve put together a few Fabulous Links.

Schools are closed for at least a few weeks here. Parents with kids at home, I’ve got you. A FB friend shared a piece in Travel and Leisure saying that 12 of the world’s top museums offer virtual tours. (Travel and Leisure). And my favorite museum in NYC, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, has virtual tours, too, including this tour just for kids.

I’ve got you more crafty types, too. The Craft Studio in NYC has online craft classes. Here’s their Instagram and web site.

And this is still a beauty blog, coronavirus or not. I love this advice for young women from Dame Helen Mirren. It is important wisdom that women of every age should keep in mind.

Tell me. Are you stuck at home, with or without your littles? Maybe you have survival tips to share with me and readers who are parents. Let’s talk ‘social distancing’ and hacks for life in the time of coronavirus in the comments!

Fabulous Links: Valentine’s Edition

This sculpture is called Diana, and it is in the Charles Engelhard Court at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. I thought it looked like Cupid, so it was appropriate for Valentine’s Day.

I hope you all are enjoying the long weekend! I’ve been Miranda’ing my way through February. I’ve also been cleaning out the folders in my email, and decided a few Fabulous Links were in order.

Speaking of Miranda, Lynn Cohen, the actress who played Miranda’s no-nonsense housekeeper Magda, has passed away at the age of 86. I’m sure she’s snooping through night stand “goody drawers” in heaven. Cohen had a pretty long and storied career. Check out her obit on people.com here and Sarah Jessica Parker’s sweet Instagram tribute here.

Pantone has picked Classic Blue as it’s Color of the Year for 2020, and I’m not mad about it. (Fashion Network)

A few years ago, I received a letter from none other than Leonard Lauder. Yup, Estee’s son. He wrote in response to an article I did for Daily Glow about the death of his wife, Evelyn. In November, he was honored at the Lincoln Center Corporate Fund gala. He received the Women’s Leadership Award for his support of women’s issues and his philanthropic work. (WWD)

I always thought it was so sweet he wrote to me. I still have the letter.

So what is everyone up to this long weekend? Let’s talk winter break in the comments!

Fabulous Links of the Week

These were in my goody bag at #wwdstyledimension last week.

Welcome to the week! I wanted to share a few things that have caught my eye recently. Let’s get through Monday together.

First of all, I love that at age 54, Viola Davis is the new face of L’Oreal. Let Davis and other brand ambassadors like Helen Mirren inspire us to take care of ourselves and live our best lives. Let’s take risks. We’re over 40. Not dead. (Allure)

This is kind of cool. Does anyone out there get a Boden catalog? I do sometimes. This English company has just released a coat collection inspired by famous women like the novelists Jane Austen and Emily Bronte. I’m loving the red coat with the leopard collar. Boden is available here in the US. (Fashion Network)

And Christian Siriano has done a capsule collection for J.Jill. I like this green dress. The collection is now available here and in stores. (WWD)

Finally, I saw a piece in the New York Times a few weeks ago about how women are doing their makeup in a bathroom at the Port Authority. I think a road trip to see for myself may be in order. (New York Times)

Oh, and last week I went to a WWD NYFW event called Style Dimension. It was a talk with Orion Nevel and Karolina Kurkova about their wellness brand Gryph & Ivy Rose. Attendees got these yummy chocolate hearts with gut-healthy probiotics in their goody bags (see photo above). I also can’t wait to try the body oil we got! The brand was created with children in mind, but it’s great for the whole family! Check it out here!

I’ll be writing away for The Doctor this week. What are you up to? Let’s give each other a little Monday Motivation in the comments!

Loved the colors in these tulips!

The long March is finally over! (Sorry, I couldn’t resist.) This past week, I finished two articles for The Doctor while I hung out at different Kettle Space co-working spaces. So far, I really like it. It’s a library-like vibe, so I’m more able to focus on getting work done, versus when I’m working from home.

A few exciting launches were announced this week. Ready?

First the important stuff. Urban Decay has announced the details of it’s Game of Thrones collection. Check it out below. I’m into the Mother of Dragons highlighter palette myself. It drops at select Macy’s and macys.com, Ulta and ulta.com, Sephora and sephora.com, and urbandecay.com on April 13.

Drew Barrymore’s brand is expanding into home decor. Flower Home is now available on walmart.com, jet.com, and hayneedle.com. I’ve always been a big fan of Drew, ever since Boys On the Side and The Wedding Singer. She seems fun and down-to-earth, yet quirky, like me. And she’s a pretty savvy businesswoman. With design ideas inspired by Barrymore’s own homes and travels, Flower Home is a great way to perk up your place without breaking the bank. You know me. I’m drooling over this vase. (WWD)

And remember last week, when Amazon announced it was getting into skin care with Belei, and Saks Off Fifth announced it was launching it’s own cosmetics line? This week, QVC announced it is also jumping on the in-house ‘brandwagon’, so to speak. The retailer is working with makeup artist Carmindy (from What Not to Wear) and Batallure Beauty to develop Carmindy Beauty, QVC’s first exclusive beauty brand. The line comprises 16 products, including makeup brushes. Look for it in September. (WWD)

And BTW, how cute are these cheek and eye palettes that look like license plates, courtesy of The Balm?

“Flowers for spring. Groundbreaking.” Miranda Priestley

We officially said goodbye to winter this week, and not a moment too soon. Beauty brands came out of hibernation as well, with some fun new launches. Here are a few of my faves.

Supergoop! has launched a line of cream eye shadows with SPF 30. So perfect for outdoor cookouts and cocktails. You can pick them up online. I want to try these this summer! (WWD)

Amazon has launched its own skin care line, called Belei. The name is a combination of ‘beauty’ and ‘believe’. All 12 products in the line cost less than $40, and are eligible for free shipping. Amazon Prime subscribers even get unlimited free, two-day shipping. Who said The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is the only reason to sign up for Amazon Prime? (Allure)

WWD did a roundup of some new hair care launches. I bought the Living Proof Color Care shampoo. I’ll post a review as soon as I’ve used it a few times. (WWD)

And finally, off-price retailer Saks Off 5th announced the launch of it’s private label beauty line, Fifth City. The line includes color cosmetics, hair accessories, and makeup brushes. It is available online and at 20 Off 5th locations. (WWD)

This week on the blog, I talked about self control and willpower.

This post has me excited about spring and trying a few new things. I am also looking forward to getting out more with my camera. What are you most looking forward to, now that the weather is getting warmer? If you try any of these new products, or even just a ‘new-to-you’ product, please post your thoughts in the comments!

Fabulous Links: St. Patrick’s Day

He’s magically delicious! *

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Spring is allmooost here. Unfortunately in New Jersey, it’s taking it’s sweet time. Beauty Land made a few cool announcements this week, so let’s get started.

Glamlite Cosmetics, the brand that brought you a pizza-inspired palette, announced its newest launch, an ode to the all-American burger! All your favorite toppings are there, including avocado and tomato, so you really can have it your way! Here’s the post from Glamlite’s Instagram :

https://www.instagram.com/p/BuxUfrfDVZU/

Did you play the video? I wonder why they chose ‘Rockin’ Robin’. If you have any ideas, please drop me a line in the comments. Since I watched this video, I can’t get that song out of my head! And I don’t even eat beef. The burger palette is coming soon. (Allure)

M.A.C. announced it is collaborating with Disney on an Aladdin-themed mini collection comprising a blush, a lipstick, and an eye shadow palette. One goodie for each wish a genie would grant. I’m drooling over the palette. I never got over missing out on the MAC x Cinderella palette. The collection launches on May 16, right before the premiere of Guy Ritchie’s live-action version of Aladdin. (Allure)

And I saved the best for last. Sephora announced this week it is launching ts own credit card. A Sephora Visa credit card and a Sephora Visa Signature credit card are coming, too. The cards will have rewards above and beyond any Sephora Beauty Insider perks. If you choose a Sephora Visa Signature card, you’ll also have access to Visa Signature Benefits. (Allure)

And this week on The Doctor Will See You Now, I wrote a piece about self control and New Year’s resolutions.

If you need me, I’ll be at The Shops at Hudson Yards, which opened on Friday. It features New York City’s first Neiman Marcus, and lots of other good stuff, like Kiehl’s, Sephora, and Jo Malone London. Maybe I’ll see you there?

*Shout out to my friend Christina, who snapped this guy on the subway!

Fabulous Links: R.I.P. Luke Perry

Before Ryan Gosling and ‘Hey, girl’, Perry’s smoldering gaze made women melt.

Is there anything else to discuss this week but the untimely death of Luke Perry? I don’t watch Riverdale, but I have seen Beverly Hills, 90210. No one was effortlessly cooler than Perry’s Dylan McKay. The man made half-undone overalls look cool!

Dylan was a brooding loner, and the bad boy your mother warned you about. You hated yourself for loving him, but that’s what your teens and early 20s are for: hopeless crushes on mysterious men with an air of danger about them.

You wanted to save them from themselves, but your efforts were futile. The quest for redemption made them a bigger challenge, and more interesting, than the jocks and science nerds. Besides, what Mom never knew never hurt her.

By all accounts, Perry himself was a very nice guy, and a devoted family man. If you haven’t read the tribute to Perry by Entertainment Weekly‘s Kristen Baldwin, click here. It’s beautifully written.

Kristen is one of my favorite pop culture/TV journalists. And she humors me by occasionally liking my replies to her tweets.

Oh, I forgot. There is one thing that has happened in the beauty/wellness space we need to talk about. Remember how in the President’s Day Fabulous Links, I mentioned CBD oil is the new ‘it ingredient’ ? Now Martha Stewart has partnered with Canadian cannabis company Canopy Growth to advise them on the development of cannabis-based products. I’ve always thought Martha was a marketing genius, so it’s interesting she is getting into the cannabis space. (CNN Business) I don’t think the space is done growing, pardon the pun. (Beauty Independent)

And this week on the blog, I rocked my Purrberry/Burberry bracelet from Purfect Bracelets.

Fabulous Links: Lee Radziwill and Karl Lagerfeld

https://www.instagram.com/p/BuHz76DFmDv/

It was a short week here in the U.S. with President’s Day and all, so there’s not that much to report from beauty land. But unfortunately, we did lose two style icons, Lee Radziwill, Jackie O’s younger sister, and Karl Lagerfeld, prolific designer for Chloe, Chanel, and Fendi.

Radziwill, a former princess, passed away on February 15 in NYC. She was 85. It must have been tough living in Jackie’s shadow, but Radziwill looked good doing it. Who knew she was actually the more fashionable of the two, and passed along style tips and snuck French couture to her big sister? Radziwill also knew her way around upholstery and paint swatches, having dabbled in interior design for a while. And for you Real Housewives fans out there, Carole Radziwill of RHONY is the widow of Radziwill’s son, Anthony. Here’s her New York Times obit. (The New York Times) And Women’s Wear Daily was kind enough to put together a slideshow to commemorate her style. (WWD)

On February 19, the fashion world lost one of its giants, Karl Lagerfeld. He passed away in Paris. Like most fashionistas, he was somewhat vague about his age, although it was officially given as 85. Known for modernizing classic couture, he also created the concept of the Fun Fur: luxury pelts such as mink that were dyed and shaved, then made into never-before-seen creations.

No tribute to Lagerfeld is complete without a mention of his beloved Birman cat Choupette. Lagerfeld understood cats are really just royalty with fur and fangs, and treated Choupette accordingly. She wore diamond collars and had her own Instagram account. Choupette was often photographed with Lagerfeld, and was known to fly on his private plane. (When given a peek into Choupette’s life, my cats developed serious FOMO. Poor babies.)

Here is Lagerfeld’s obit in The New York Times. (The New York Times) And since the Oscars are today, here is a look back at some of his designs for Chanel on the red carpet. (WWD) Lagerfeld was also known for his witty, sometimes snarky quotes. Here’s a few of them. (WWD)

And so I don’t leave you on such a downbeat note, Urban Decay announced this week it’s launching a Game of Thrones-themed makeup collection. It drops in April, just in time for the series’ final season. BTW, am I the only person left on the planet who has not seen GoT?! (Allure)

And finally, this week on the blog, I talked about the importance of self care, and what self care means for me. What does it mean for you? February has just five days left. Can you believe it?! Hang in there people!

Fabulous Links President’s Day Weekend Edition

A nice lady used my phone to take this pic of me at the Taoray Wang show, in exchange for me taking one of her on her phone.

Hi everyone! I hope you are enjoying the long weekend. Some great beauty/fashion news has been posted lately, and we just wrapped up New York Fashion Week, so we have a lot to talk about.

Guys, remember Nudestix, which I thought was brilliant? Well apparently, Hilary Duff and Chelsea Handler agree! Company founder Jenny Frankel announced a few weeks ago that Duff and Handler are investing in the company! (WWD)

If you follow beauty news like me, you’ve probably heard that cannabidiol (CBD) oil is the new big ingredient in the beauty and wellness space. It’s everywhere. Recently Christopher Gavigan, co-founder with Jessica Alba of The Honest Company, announced he is launching a direct-to-consumer CBD business called Prima. (WWD) And exclusive retailer Barney’s New York is launching a ‘upscale cannabis concept shop’ called The High End in it’s Beverly Hills location. It has partnered with Beboe, sometimes called the ‘Hermes of cannabis’, on this project. Time will tell if there can really be an Hermes of marijuana. The High End opens next month. (Fashion Network)

Victoria Beckham is launching her own beauty brand by the end of the year. You can Spice up your makeup stash to make it more Posh. Puns aside, I can’t wait to see what VB comes up with. She has collaborated with Estee Lauder before, and she obviously knows beauty. It should be good stuff. (Allure)

My fave show from New York Fashion Week? Michael Kors and his ode to the fabulous 70s. I didn’t go, but my friend Jan was there. She has covered New York Fashion Week for more than 10 years, and called the clothes “languid, and so damn sexy!” I couldn’t have said it better myself. And the king of 70s pop, Barry Manilow, stopped by to end the show with his hit ‘Copacabana’. (Fashion Network)

And BTW, how great did 68-years-fabulous Pat Cleveland look at Neem Khan? Personally, I’m not a fan of glitter. It gets all over. To quote a designer on Project Runway, “glitter is the herpes of art supplies. It spreads.” But you go, Pat! Age shouldn’t stop you from wearing what you want. Even glitter. (Allure)

This week on the blog, I shared some pics of my adventures at New York Fashion Week.
