Fabulous Links of the Week

Pretty lavender (or hyacinth?) on The Highline

Hope everyone is keeping cool! Luckily, the beauty world hasn’t totally gone on vacation. In this week’s Fabulous Links, L’Oreal goes high tech, SkinOwl says good-bye to a hero product, and a 70-year-old Korean granny takes YouTube by storm!

L’Oreal and Perfect Corp. have announced a partnership allowing users of Perfect Corp.’s YouCam app to virtually “try on” products from all L’Oreal brands. Customers can then buy makeup through the app or in-store. If anyone tries the YouCam app, please let me know what you think. Am I missing out? (WWD)

SkinOwl announced this week the brand is discontinuing mangosteen oil, its original flagship product with a cult following that includes my mom. The good news is that company founder Annie Tevelin has a new launch in the works. (SkinOwl blog) You can see my original post about SkinOwl, and my interview with Annie, here.

Park Makrye is a 70-year-old grandmother in South Korea. She is also a social media star, posting YouTube videos dubbed Grandma’s Diary. In her videos, she is living life to the fullest, charming an entire country in the process. Companies such as Samsung and Lotte have been calling…

Park’s success is well deserved. Her father refused to send her to school because she was a girl. Then her husband accumulated debts and abandoned the family, leaving Park to pay off the creditors and raise their three kids. Through it all, she never lost her joie de vivre and sense of humor. We should all be so resilient. (Fox Business)

This week on the blog, I shared Part 2 and Part 3 from my Highline photo shoot. Next week I’ll have some beauty posts, I swear!

This year, I’m doing the Eyecandy Project 52 photography challenge. Every week, we have to take a picture inspired by a prompt, such as From Above. Some prompts are relevant to the time of year, some are more evergreen. I’ll post my more successful efforts here about once a quarter. Check out the Q1 highlights here.

Fabulous Links of the Week

In keeping with the Fourth of July theme…

Hope everyone took some time to relax this holiday week! Not much happened in beauty land, but Target announced some changes for the better, and 49-year old Celine Dion posed for an eye-popping picture posted to Instagram.

Target said this week it is dropping its popular Mossimo (just the menswear) and Merona (men’s and women’s) labels. The Bullseye plans to introduce in their stead athleisure brand JoyLab, trendy womenswear brand A New Day, and Goodfellow & Co., for the hipster guy in your life. It looks like some new home stuff is in the works, too. The new brands are scheduled to debut this fall. (Glamour) (Wall Street Journal)

Vogue photographed Celine Dion in Paris during Couture Week. Nude. You go, girl! Looking good! (Elle)

This week was Photography Week on the blog, so I posted pics from my Highline photo shoot and the NYC skyline workshop I took.

This year, I’m doing the Eyecandy Project 52 photography challenge. Every week, we have to take a picture inspired by a prompt, such as From Above. Fabulous Links of the Week: Fourth of July Edition

Happy Fourth of July!

Happy Fourth! Hope you are having a great holiday weekend! In beauty news, Kat von D announced she is coming out with a Lolita-inspired version of her popular Shade + Light eyeshadow palette, a study in the Annals of Internal Medicine reports an increase in complaints about beauty product side effects, and Lure Hsu has the Internet talking about how she looks half her age.

Kat von D’s most popular lipstick shade is called Lolita, a looks-good-on-everybody rosy taupe. She even came out with a combination eye shadow and blush in Lolita. Now she is developing a Lolita-inspired version of her bestselling Shade + Light Eye Contour palette. I can’t wait to see it! I wonder how it will compare to Urban Decay’s rose gold Naked 3 palette… (Allure)

As a journalist, I cover medicine and health, so this story was of particular interest to me. According to a new study, people are increasingly reporting adverse events related to beauty products to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The biggest culprits were hair care, skin care, and tattoos. The authors concluded that the FDA should have more jurisdiction over the beauty industry. Currently, the agency only requires a few products, such as acne treatments and sunscreen, to receive pre-market approval. Otherwise, beauty is basically a self regulated industry. (JAMA Internal Medicine) (Racked)

Taiwanese interior designer Lure Hsu is 41 years old, people. That is not a typo. 4-1. She doesn’t look a day over 22. And the Internet can’t stop talking. To quote When Harry Met Sally, “I’ll have what she’s having.” (Allure)

This year, I’m doing the Eyecandy Project 52 photography challenge. Every week, we have to take a picture inspired by a prompt, such as From Above. This week on the blog, I shared some pics I took in the skyline photography workshop and talked to two amazing dentists about keeping your teeth white this summer.

Fabulous Links of the Week

The Empire State Building, as seen through my new 55-210 mm lens!

Summertime, and the living is easy! I was out in the park recently, and took some photos with my new 55-210 mm lens. The above shot of the Empire State Building is my fave.

Meanwhile in beauty news, Beauty Pie is launching an affordable skin care line, Brooke Shields is getting back together with Calvin Klein, and Estee Lauder has named a new global beauty director who is French. And very cool.

Beauty Pie announced this week it is launching a skincare line with everything priced between $5 and $13. The six-month-old company was started by Marcia Kilgore of Bliss and Soap & Glory fame. For a monthly fee of $10, Beauty Pie lets members buy unbranded makeup with no retail markup. Think mascara for $2! Now, they are selling skincare. I may just have to try it out! (Racked)

Remember the 80s, when nothing came between Brooke Shields and her Calvins? Well, Shields and the company have announced they are collaborating on an as-yet-unspecified new project. Stay tuned…(Fashion Network)

In an effort to attract a hipper, younger customer, Estee Lauder has announced it has named French makeup artist, social media star, and all-around It girl Violette as the new global beauty director for its namesake brand. Violette will be working closely with Estee Lauder’s global creative director Matthew Parr. The Estee your mother and grandmother loved could use a drink from the fountain of youth. Putting Kendall Jenner on a billboard just isn’t enough. (WWD)

This week on the blog, I shared my latest find, Lime & Lotus Organics.

Fabulous Links of the Week: Father’s Day Edition

A dad and his girls! With my dad and sister at Father’s Day dinner.

Happy Father’s Day 2017! Almost half of 2017 is in the books, can you believe it? Time flies… While you were getting ready to pay homage to your old man, Estee Lauder announced it is expanding it’s collaboration with Victoria Beckham and Kim Kardashian West announced she is launching a new beauty line.

Victoria Beckham and Estee Lauder announced this week they are expanding their successful makeup collaboration to double it’s original size. The 10 hero products from the initial collaboration and 18 new products will be available this fall. This isn’t your grandma’s Estee Lauder! (WWD)

Love them or hate them, the Kardashian-Jenner women really know beauty, so anything they do beauty-wise is big news. Kim Kardashian West announced this week she is launching her own makeup line, KKW Beauty, and a fragrance. As someone who follows the beauty industry, I’ll admit I am curious to see what North and Saint’s mom comes up with, and the reviews KKW Beauty gets from editors and bloggers. The fun kicks off on June 21 with creme highlight and contour kits in four shades: light, medium, dark, and deep dark. (WWD)

This week on the blog, I shard my latest find, Beauty So Clean makeup sanitizing products!

Fabulous Links of the Week

Enjoying a summer night in NYC at a rooftop bar with my friend Laurie.

Happy Monday! Dang, this weekend was a hot one here in NJ and NYC! Lately, beauty news has been pretty hot, too. Urban Decay announced the launch of its new Urban Decay Naked Heat eye shadow palette, JLo posted a makeup-free selfie, and Salma Hayek is launching a line of smoothies and acai bowls, some of which can be used as a face mask.

Urban Decay is welcoming a new member to the Naked family. Get ready for the Urban Decay Naked Heat palette. The palette features terra cottas, coppers, and oranges. If you like your eye shadows in warmer tones, brace yourself. (Cooler tones look better on me. Boo.) The palette drops on June 30. (Allure)

Jennifer Lopez posted a makeup-free selfie from backstage in Las Vegas. How is this woman freaking 48 years old?!? (Glamour)

Salma Hayek collaborated with Juice Generation on Blend It Yourself, a line of smoothies and acai bowls delivered to your door all prepped and ready for you to well, blend it yourself! The line includes three Beauty Blends that can either be drunk as a smoothie or applied to your face as a skin care mask. Sip or slather. Yum! (WWD)

This week on the blog, I shared my Sephora birthday haul and my picture story about our local animal shelter. Also, I did a story for The Doctor Will See You Now about sunscreen. You are remembering to apply sunscreen, aren’t you?!

Fabulous Links of the Week

I was in a reflective mood…

It was my birthday week. I’m another year wiser! (I hope.) While I was turning the page on another year, Mariah Carey announced her beauty line is definitely happening and Selma Blair shut down the shamers of her gray roots.

Apparently, Mariah Carey and her manager Stella Bulochnikov are starting a beauty line, complete with it’s own brick-and-mortar store in Beverly Hills. Hopefully, it will launch in time for the holidays when “All I Want for Christmas Is You” is on repeat. Mariah’s collaboration with M.A.C. was such a success, I can’t wait to check it out. (New York Post) (Allure)

Selma Blair? #grayhairdontcare! Blair took to Instagram to clap back in the best way at those daring to throw shade at her peek-a-boo roots. What’s a little gray among friends? (Allure)

This week on the blog, I reviewed DermaE’s Vitamin C Skincare Collection.

Fabulous Links of the Week: Memorial Day Edition

Happy Memorial Day!

Can you believe summer has (unofficially) started? I can’t! While getting ready for the long weekend and trying to master Adobe Lightroom, I did come across interesting beauty news.

Jamie O’Banion hit paydirt last year when she brought GloPRO, an at-home microneedling tool, to market. It is currently available on HSN and at a few high-end retailers (Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus), but will be available at Sephora and Harrod’s later in the year. This great profile in Forbes details O’Banion’s journey to skincare success. (Forbes)

Estee Lauder just launched a virtual reality try-on tool for it’s Estee Lauder flagship brand on the brand’s web site and mobile web site. I’ll have to try it out and post screen shots! (WWD)

Has anyone ever tried microneedling? It is supposed to be amazing for your skin. Has anyone ever used one of those virtual reality try on tools that are so popular now? Tell me about your experiences with both (or either) in the comments!

Fabulous Links of the Week

Thought these were pretty! For sale at a local bodega.

Next weekend is Memorial Day! Can you believe it? How time flies! This week in the beauty world, Urban Decay announced it was launching a Naked Perfume Oil on June 3 (for Sephora VIB Rouge members) and June 7 on the Urban Decay web site. (Elle) And for you mani/pedi fans, Essie has declared June 1 (my birthday!!!) National Nail Polish Day! I may be celebrating the big 4-@#$ with a trip to the groomer. (WWD)

This week on the blog, I shared my frustration about not being able to establish and stick to a regular Sunday skin care routine. If you have any tips to get me started and keep me motivated, I’m listening!

Fabulous Links of the Week: Mother’s Day 2017

Dinner with my family – Mother’s Day 2017

I hope all you mommas had a great Mother’s Day. I did! My family and I had a nice dinner together to celebrate. (See pic above.) Maybe you can talk celeb makeup artist Val Garland into doing your mom’s makeup. She just got the gig as global makeup director at L’Oreal Paris. (WWD) Be sure to check out the photo gallery. Ms. Garland has come up with some cool, vintage-inspired looks! And some avant-garde ones, too. It will be interesting to see what Garland and L’Oreal create together.

This whole Mother’s Day thing has me thinking: What beauty secrets did you learn from your mom? I don’t know about beauty secrets, per se, but my mom instilled in me a love for blush, soft pink lipstick, and blue eyeliner. Very traditional colors. To this day, I still reach for pinks, nudes, and taupes, and I have eyeliner pencils in every shade of blue. And I own more blush than I could wear in ten lifetimes.

The nuns at my elementary school would yell at me for wearing blush. I didn’t care. But I didn’t experiment with eye shadow until I was north of 35. Go figure.

So what did you learn about makeup/beauty from you mom/grandmother/aunt? Let’s spill family beauty secrets in the comments!

Have a great week! xo
