Fabulous Links of the Week

Up & Out Blow Out Bar near me always has the best signs!

Brrr…We’re bracing for an epic snowstorm here in NJ. But on to more important things. M.A.C. fans and Ulta shoppers celebrate, Hillary Clinton has a new look that has the Internet going crazy, and Birkenstock is dropping a skincare line, in this week’s Fabulous Links!

M.A.C. is coming to Ulta online and in stores in May and June. In time for all your wedding season needs! (WWD) And p.s. You can now get nyakio skincare at Ulta, too. I am still obsessed with nyakio Hydrating Face Oil with Kola Nut! (I don’t see it available anymore, but they have three other oils to try: a brightening oil with marula and neroli, a maracuja and yangu soothing oil, and a manketti and mafura anti-aging oil)

Hillary Clinton got new hair (with bangs!), and the World Wide Web approves! I like this look on Charlotte and Aden’s grandma! (Huffington Post)

You loved their sensible sandals, now try their…skincare?! Birkenstock, the German brand known for their hippy-ish, cork-soled sandals, announced this week it is dropping a skincare line. The products contain suberin, a substance in cork oak extract with anti-aging effects. Since the brand has been working with cork for about 240 years, maybe they know what they’re talking about. Look for Birkenstock Cosmetics this fall. (WWD)

This week on the blog, I reviewed Alastin Skincare. Once the snow gets going, I’ll post The Essence of My Neighborhood photo essay I did for photography class.

This year, I’m doing the Eyecandy Project 52 photography challenge. Every week, we have to take a picture inspired by a prompt, such as From Above. Some prompts are relevant to the time of year, some are more evergreen. I’m thinking I’ll post my more successful efforts here about once a quarter. Wish me luck!

Target Pledges Safer Beauty Products

I was going to include this news in last weekend’s Fabulous Links, but thought it was worthy of its own post. Retail Dive has reported Target announced ambitious plans to make its beauty and personal care products safer by 2020. Target will strive for greater ingredient transparency, as well. As if we need another reason to love beauty shopping at Target!

This new initiative applies to Target favorites like Sonia Kashuk and Pixi Beauty, and national brands, too. Jennifer Silberman, Target’s chief sustainability officer, told Allure, “We know our guests are becoming increasingly concerned with chemicals in products they use in, on, or around their bodies, and they trust us to provide better choices.”

Target is taking a multi-pronged approach with its initiative:

Transparency: Achieve transparency about all ingredients in product categories, including beauty and personal care, by 2020.

Chemical Management: Formulate beauty, personal care, baby care, and household cleaning products without phthalates, parabens, formaldehyde or formaldehyde donors, or nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs) by 2020.

Innovation: Invest $5 billion in green chemistry innovation by 2022.

Target’s safety and transparency plan comes at a time when the cosmetics and personal care industries have been rethinking their ingredient strategy. Last month, Unilever, parent company of brands such as Caress, Dove, and Suave, announced it would disclose details about the fragrances in its personal care products. “We are committed to ensuring people have the information they need to choose the right product for them. We believe that providing this transparency will help build further trust in Unilever and our brands,” David Blanchard, Unilever’s Chief Research and Development Officer, said in a statement.

The government is also worried about ingredient safety. In 2015, Sens. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Susan Collins (R-ME) introduced the Personal Care Products Safety Act, an amendment to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, which has not been updated much since 1938.

This legislation would require companies to register their manufacturing facilities with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and submit to the agency statements about the ingredients in their products and how much of each ingredient is in each product. The agency must also review the safety of five ingredients per year, and can set the standard for safe use of an ingredient.

If you were a fan of Schoolhouse Rock back in the day, you can track the bill’s progress here. Allure did an excellent piece on the Personal Care Products Safety Act back in October.

Tell me. Do you look even look at the ingredients list on your beauty products? I admit, I don’t, even after blogging about things like the Environmental Working Group and Skin Deep. Let’s talk greener, safer beauty in the comments!

2016 Holiday Gift Guide: For Her

I loved putting together my holiday gift guide and vegan beauty gift guide last year. I had a blast putting this year’s guide together, too! As always, I tried to include things in a range of price points. Who knows? You may even get some ideas about what you want from Santa…

Makeup

I love Bobbi Brown. Her colors are gorgeous and her products go on like a dream and last and last. This ‘Bobbi’s Beauty Book’ palette with six eye shadows, blush, bronzer, and lip gloss takes girls-on-the-go from day to night.

Remember last year, when I got the K.I.S.S..I.N.G. mini lipstick charms from Charlotte TIlbury? This year, Charlotte came out with lipstick charms in her Matte Revolution formula. It includes Red Carpet Red, a classic Holiywood red, Amazing Grace, a pretty pink inspired by Grace Kelly, and Very Victoria, a nod to Victoria Beckham’s signature taupe nude lip.

Urban Decay dropped the mic when they came out with their Naked Ultimate Basics eye shadow palette this fall. The looks the UD’er on your list could create with this are endless.

Makeup Brushes

I think makeup brushes are almost more important than the makeup itself. I mean, makeup washes off with soap and water, right? If you use a good primer and good tools, your makeup will always look amazing.

Check out this basic brush set from Bobbi Brown. Its pretty much everything the makeup maven on your list will need, and they will last her a lifetime. I love my Bobbi Brown blush and eye shadow brushes, and I’ve had them for years.

I get it. Not every one wants to drop $200 on a set of makeup brushes. How about the Sephora Collection Face the Day Full Face Brush Set? Its got a powder brush, foundation brush, large shadow brush, large brow brush, and smudge brush in a trifold case. BTW, I am also loving this ‘Tools of the Trade’ brush set from Sephora.

Nails

I’m obsessed with the Netflix series The Crown. The girl who also binge-watched the adventures of young Queen Elizabeth 2 and her party-hearty kid sister, Margaret, may love the royalty-inspired ‘Her Majesty’s Nail Color Set’ from Deborah Lippmann.

This EVENTful Nail Lacquer set from butterLODON is another cute option.

Hair

If your niece/daughter/grandaughter is a regular at her local blow out bar, she may be into the Let It Blow! Drybar to Go Ultimate Travel Essentials Kit. You get a travel hair dryer, travel hair brush, dry shampoo, dry conditioner, and hair clips, all in a cute travel pouch.

Another option? The Spread Cheer and Perfect Hair set from Living Proof. You know I love Living Proof . And their dry shampoo won an Allure Best of Beauty award.

Fragrance

You know me and scent. It’s complicated. But if you have a fragrance lover in your life, she may like this Jo Malone London cologne collection. She’ll get five of Jo Malone’s signature scents, and she can mix and match. Bonus: it comes in a pretty gift box. (I suck at gift wrapping and hate it.)

Or if your giftee is like my grandmother who loves scented candles, how about this gorgeous votive candle set from celeb-fave brand diptyque?

If all else fails, Sephora, Nordstrom, and Ulta have tons of great ideas for the beauty buffs on your list. And if you need stocking stuffers, I’ve got you.

I am looking to get more into photography in 2017, so I have asked for a camera and photography lessons for the holidays. What are you hoping to find under the tree?

This month, I’m taking the 25 Days of Christmas Photo a Day Challenge on Instagram, courtesy of blogger and shutterbug extraordinaire LaShawn Wiltz of Everyday Eyecandy. I’ll be posting pics daily inspired by Christmas- and holiday-themed prompts, using the hashtag #eyecandyholidaychallenge.

Indie Beauty Expo NY 2016

This week was the annual Indie Beauty Expo NY. This showcase for up-and-coming indie beauty brands was founded by celebrity esthetician Jillian Wright. Over the past few years it has really grown! This year it was held at the Metropolitan Pavilion, home of The Makeup Show NYC.

I went into the city twice: Wednesday for the press preview, and Thursday for the actual event. I’ll be trying out the stuff I got, and sharing reviews with you over the next few weeks. But for now, I thought I’d share some of the fun pics I took at the show! First my press pass:

IBEpresspass

This big unicorn was at the Pacifica booth:

Pacificaunicorn

They had a photo booth where you could take pictures with funny hats:

ibeny2016

Near the entrance/exit, they had a station where you could write “what indie beauty means to you” on a card, then pin it to a heart-shaped board: To me, indie beauty means entrepreneurship and innovation.

The founders of these small companies work hard to spread the word about what they are doing. Many of the booths at the show were manned by the brands’ founders themselves! And each brand is trying to put a unique spin on beauty and wellness. That’s tough to do in such a crowded market.

Product Review: Living Proof No Frizz Nourishing Oil

Living Proof No Frizz Nourishing Oil

Living Proof No Frizz Nourishing Oil

Labor Day is two weeks away. Where did the time go?! Unfortunately, late August means killer humidity and fried hair. Nothing is worse then dealing with straw-like strands at the end of the summer. My solution? Living Proof No Frizz Nourishing Oil.*

This oil is light and has a faint herbal scent. After I towel dry and comb out my hair, I let it air dry. When it is almost dry, I rub a small amount of the oil between my palms, and apply it to the ends of my hair. I have been using it for about two weeks, and it has truly kept my fine, wavy hair frizz free and soft.

Have you tried Living Proof No Frizz Nourishing Oil yet? (It’s new!) How do you protect your strands from sun and humidity? Let’s talk hair in the comments!

Summer 2016 Favorites: Nuxe Dry Oil, Alterna BB Beach Balm, Brush-On Block Sunblock, and NARS Hot Sand

Summer 2016 Favorites..So Far!

Summer 2016 Favorites..So Far!

Summer is about at the halfway point, so I thought I’d share a few of the things I’m loving, but haven’t mentioned here before.

Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse Dry Oil I love using dry oil after a shower when its really humid out, because it’s lighter than lotion. Nuxe is a French pharmacy brand, and always chic French girls supposedly love this dry oil. You can put it in your bath or even in your hair or on your face, but I haven’t tried that yet. Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse All-Purpose Dry Oil is available at Target.**

Alterna Bamboo Beach BB Beach Balm for Hair This silky cream is like beachy waves in a tube! It provides moisture, light hold, and UV protection. I put it on the ends of my clean, damp hair after I comb it out, and voila, instant mermaid hair! Plus, it smells incredible. You can pick up Alterna Bamboo Beach BB Beach Balm at Sephora.*

Brush-On Block Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30 This mineral powder sunscreen is great for wearing under makeup. It feels light, which is important if you want sun protection, but don’t want anything too heavy because of the heat. You can buy Brush-On Block Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30 on Amazon.*

NARS Hot Sand Collection: Hot Sand/Orgasm Blush Duo and Hanamachi Kabuki Brush I’ve pretty much been using this blush/bronzer compact and kabuki brush non-stop since I got them. I love how I can use NARS Orgasm to set my Chosungah-22 cushion blush for a pink flush or my Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge for Lips and Cheeks for a peachy look. And how cute is the kabuki brush? The Hot Sand collection is limited edition, but the blush duo and the kabuki brush are available at narscosmetics.com.*

So tell me. What products have you discovered this summer? Let’s talk summer favorites in the comments!

Beauty and Pin-Ups and Pin-Ups for Vets!

Valor hairspray by Beauty and Pin-Ups. Yes, that's Gina Elise on the bottle!

Valor hairspray by Beauty and Pin-Ups. Yes, that’s Gina Elise on the bottle!

I’m sure I have mentioned on here my love of anything vintage and my fascination with the World War II era. So I was really excited to talk to Gina Elise, founder of Pin-Ups for Vets, and Kenny Kahn, CEO of Beauty and Pin-Ups, about their collaboration to benefit those who have served our country. Perfect timing for the Fourth of July!

Elise and Kahn first crossed paths on the TLC reality competition Global Beauty Masters, sort of a Top Chef for stylists. The challenge was to make your model look like a vintage pin-up, and Elise was one of the models. Afterward, Elise and Kahn found themselves standing on line together at a Starbucks, and got to talking.

“I was completely intrigued by her as a person, she was about as authentic as anyone I had met in some time,” said Kahn. He thought Elise had a great purpose with Pin-Ups for Vets, and really wanted to be a part of what she was doing.

After checking out Elise’s social media posts and looking into the Pin-Ups for Vets organization, Kahn was on board. “I loved the way she brought joy to military veterans, and I also loved that she involved active and non-active members of the military in her mission,” he said.

When Beauty and Pin-Ups developed its new light hold hair spray, dubbed Valor, the brand chose Elise as its model. Beauty and Pin-Ups also donates a portion of the proceeds from every sale of Valor to Pin-Ups for Vets.

Helping Veterans

Elise told me that she started Pin-Ups for Vets almost 11 years ago as a creative way to give back to America’s veterans. She was inspired by her grandfather, who served in the army during World War !!.

“Back in 2006, a lot of stories made the news about our troops coming back from Iraq, and trying to get medical care,” she said. “I just really wanted to do something to support the Veterans Administration (VA) and help vets and troops.” She felt the vintage pin-up was an appropriate motif because pin-ups were such a big part of military culture during World War II, and reminded the troops of what they were fighting for.

Pin-Ups for Vets raises funds primarily through the sale of its calendar, which features real-life veterans dressed as 40s-era pin-ups. The organization donates medical equipment to veterans’ hospitals nationwide. Calendar models also dress in their pin-up garb and visit veterans in VA hospitals, and give the vets copies of the calendar as gifts.

Doing Good and Rocking Great Hair

Beauty and Pin-Ups was launched less than a year ago, said Kahn. He went on to say, “We set out to build a brand that stands for something really important and creates great hair care products.”

The concept for Beauty and Pin-Ups was born before Kahn and his team knew what the products were going to be. “We had a discussion about the history of the pin-up, and what it must have been like to be a pin-up back in the 40s,” Kahn said. The pin-ups on the brand’s packaging may seem tame by today’s standards, but were probably pretty risqué by the 40s standards.

The Beauty and Pin-Ups team considered the mindset of the person who posed that way. “You had to be courageous and have a sense of your femininity and your sexuality,” said Kahn. He thought those were powerful messages to build a brand around.

In addition to its work with Pin-Ups for Vets, Beauty and Pin-Ups also donates a portion of its sales to Best Buddies International, an organization that helps those with intellectual disabilities. You can shop the whole Beauty and Pin-Ups line here.

Pin-Ups for Vets and Best Buddies International are such great causes. Do you have a favorite charity or a cause that’s close to your heart? Let’s talk about it in the comments!

Skin Cancer Awareness Month: Protecting Your Scalp

Q: Why do people (myself included) forget to protect their scalp from the sun?

A: They can’t see it, so they forget it is always exposed to the sun all. the. time. “You look in the mirror, and you look at your face and jawline. You are driving, and you look at your hands,” Rebecca Kazin, associate director of the Washington Institute for Dermatologic Laser Surgery, told me.

I agree. At 4’10”, I never see the top of anyone’s head, much less my own.

Kazin did have a few good tips for protecting your scalp, though.

  • Wear a wide-brimmed (about 6″) hat. Skip the visor: it doesn’t shield the back of your neck, said Kazin. I’ve rounded up a few of my favorites from the sun protective clothing brand Coolibar:

You can view all the women’s sun hats from Coolibar here. Here are more hats from another sun protective clothing brand called Solumbra, which I mentioned in my previous post about Skin Cancer Awareness Month.

  • Switch up the part in your hair. Cover the part in your hair when you are in the sun, and switch your part every day, so the same area is not always exposed to the sun, Kazin said.
  • Rules for updos. If you wear your hair up, don’t wear it with a part, and do remember to put sunscreen on the back of your neck and the tops of your ears.

Tell me. How do you protect your scalp when you are in the sun? Do you even think about it? Let me know in the comments!

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. As a beauty blogger, I feel like I should devote a few posts to this important issue. So I am going to do a skin cancer-related post every week or so throughout the month.

Product Review: Kiehl’s Deep Micro-Exfoliating Scalp Treatment

Kiehl's Deep Micro-Exfoliating Scalp Treatment

Kiehl’s Deep Micro-Exfoliating Scalp Treatment

I took this post in the Zoe Report as a hint my hair care regimen might be missing something. And since my chest cold was still kicking my behind, and pampering yourself at home is the bet way I know to feel better, I tried the Kiehl’s Deep Micro-Exfoliating Scalp Treatment I bought. I said I’d report back, and I am a woman of my word

My scalp tends to be really itchy, especially in the early spring and fall, when the weather can’t make up its mind. I also get a lot of dandruff when that happens. Yuck.

I have to say, the Kiehl’s scalp treatment really helped. It smells medicinal, because it has camphor and menthol in it, but it does smell better than most dandruff shampoos I’ve tried.

You massage it into a dry or damp scalp, rinse it out after five minutes, and then shampoo as usual. I didn’t notice any lingering medicine smell. Just the scent of my shampoo.

My scalp felt lighter and cleaner, and definitely itched less after I used the treatment twice. I have noticed less dandruff, too. Yay. And my hair looked a lot cleaner between shampoos.

I am definitely incorporating scalp exfoliation into my hair routine. The Zoe Report post mentions the Kiehl’s treatment, two Christophe Robin scalp treatments, and a scalp exfoliant by Alterna.

I am not sure you need to spend Christophe Robin kind of money on a product you are supposed to use just once or twice a week. But I will be on the lookout for the Alterna Caviar Clinical Exfoliating Scalp Facial when I’m done with the Kiehl’s.

Kiehl’s Deep Micro-Exfoliating Scalp Treatment  and Alterna Caviar Clinical Exfoliating Scalp Facial are available online.

Do you use an exfoliating scalp treatment? If so, which one? Please share in the comments!

Hair: 2015 Favorites

So far, I’ve shared my favorite discoveries this year in skincare, makeup, and bath and body. I thought I’d finish my retrospective at the top: with my favorite hair products of 2015. (See what I did there?)

Shampoo/Conditioner

Alterna Caviar Anti-Aging Brightening Blonde Shampoo and Conditioner are not only the best shampoo and conditioner I’ve tried this year, they are the best shampoo and conditioner I’ve tried period. These products keep my hair soft and shiny, and they brighten and protect my highlights. BTW, Alterna’s Caviar CC Cream is pretty good, too! Kudos to Katie Holmes and the gang at Alterna!

LivingProofKloraneKardashianBeautydryshampoo

Dry Shampoo

Since every beauty editor and blogger I know of raves about Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo, I picked up a sample size bottle while browsing Sephora with Mama Bear. Now I get what the fuss is all about! Jennifer Aniston and Friends really outdid themselves. (Sorry. I had to.)

Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo gets my hair clean without weighing it down with residue and making it a greasy mess. Plus, it smells amazing.

I’m also loving Kardashian Beauty Take 2 Dry Shampoo. That’s right. I used the “K” word. Say what you will about them, those ladies know their beauty products. The editors at Allure disguised Kardashian Beauty hair products, then gave them to celebrity hair stylist Frankie Foye to use on her clients. You can read about her feedback here.

That Allure blog post made me want to try something by Kourt, Kim, and Khloe. Take 2 definitely gives your roots lift and texture, and sops up any oil. It does leave a bit of residue, but nothing too terrible. Just don’t use too much. I switch between Take 2, Perfect Hair Day, and my beloved Klorane for all my dry shampoo needs.

Styling Products

If I had to choose my luxury item for Survivor, I would grab my bottle of Bumble and Bumble Curl Conscious Defining Creme. I have fine hair with a natural wave to it, and this stuff keeps my curls soft and bouncy. Definitely the best of all the curl defining products I’ve tried in 2015.

Bumble and Bumble introduced Surf Infusion Spray, an oil-infused sibling to its iconic Surf Spray, early last year. And it lived up to all the hype. Sexy Victoria’s Secret beach waves with none of the crunch!

Did you you find any favorite new hair products this year? Tell me about them in the comments!
