Fabulous Links of the Week: Mother’s Day 2017

Dinner with my family – Mother’s Day 2017

I hope all you mommas had a great Mother’s Day. I did! My family and I had a nice dinner together to celebrate. (See pic above.) Maybe you can talk celeb makeup artist Val Garland into doing your mom’s makeup. She just got the gig as global makeup director at L’Oreal Paris. (WWD) Be sure to check out the photo gallery. Ms. Garland has come up with some cool, vintage-inspired looks! And some avant-garde ones, too. It will be interesting to see what Garland and L’Oreal create together.

This whole Mother’s Day thing has me thinking: What beauty secrets did you learn from your mom? I don’t know about beauty secrets, per se, but my mom instilled in me a love for blush, soft pink lipstick, and blue eyeliner. Very traditional colors. To this day, I still reach for pinks, nudes, and taupes, and I have eyeliner pencils in every shade of blue. And I own more blush than I could wear in ten lifetimes.

The nuns at my elementary school would yell at me for wearing blush. I didn’t care. But I didn’t experiment with eye shadow until I was north of 35. Go figure.

So what did you learn about makeup/beauty from you mom/grandmother/aunt? Let’s spill family beauty secrets in the comments!

Have a great week! xo

This year, I’m doing the Eyecandy Project 52 photography challenge. Every week, we have to take a picture inspired by a prompt, such as From Above. Some prompts are relevant to the time of year, some are more evergreen. I’ll post my more successful efforts here about once a quarter.

Product Review: Finding Ferdinand

I had a favorite uncle named Ferdinand. We called him Fred. He passed away 24 years ago, but I will always have a soft spot for those names. So after I saw this post about the makeup line Finding Ferdinand, I somehow found myself at FF headquarters in NYC

What makes Finding Ferdinand particularly cool is the app that allows you to create your own lipstick. I have been dying to create my own custom lipstick forever, and the team graciously gave me a demo.

After you download the app, you choose one of three lipstick finishes: matte, sheer, or creamy. Then you choose up to four pigments from a total of 16. The pigments range from mauve to bright orange to true red to taupe-y nude, so everyone will find something. You use the slider to determine the percentage of each pigment you want in your custom color.

After you design your color, you can save the “formula” in the app for future reorders. You can even name your color! Your product is shipped to you in about three business days.

I love how they emboss the logo on the bullet!

The look I was going for was a mauve-y pink, like the shade Jacqueline from Julie Hewett Los Angeles. I choose a creamy finish that is 60 percent Au Naturel (a beige taupe), 100 percent Pink Pizazz (a 60s-inspired bright pink), and 80 percent Creamy Mauve. I named my shade Pashmina, after my beautiful girl who passed away in August. (I wasn’t sure how Uncle Fred would feel about having a lipstick named after him.)

Pashmina: As beautiful as the lipstick she inspired.

A full-size custom lipstick is $30, but the sample-size custom is just $6! The mini size is perfect for your bag or travel. At just $6 a pop, you could even create a few different colors. And the creamy finish stands up to eating and drinking, and doesn’t dry out your lips.

How cute is this mini lipstick?!

Your lipstick comes in this envelope

Finding Ferdinand also has customizable eye shadow and blush/bronzer/highlighter palettes. You can pick from 60 eye shadows, 10 blushes, three bronzers, and two highlighters.

“We believe that beauty trends of the future will be created by the customer, so customization has always been a major part of the Finding Ferdinand DNA,” founder Nhu Le told Allure. “I really wanted each and every customer to be able to create something that they would love and love to use.”

The lipsticks and palettes comes with a sheet of stickers, so you can indulge your inner teen queen. I did.

It’s enough to make you want to decorate a Trapper Keeper!

According to a company spokeswoman, Le was inspired to name the brand Finding Ferdinand after learning the story of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella while studying abroad in Spain. The name is up to individual interpretation, however, and represents the search for and discovery of those things in life that make you feel like the best you.

Tell me. Have you ever created a custom lipstick color, or customized a makeup palette? It’s usually pretty pricey, so this is a one off for me, but it was such a treat!

Fabulous Links of the Week

Up & Out Blow Out Bar near me always has the best signs!

Brrr…We’re bracing for an epic snowstorm here in NJ. But on to more important things. M.A.C. fans and Ulta shoppers celebrate, Hillary Clinton has a new look that has the Internet going crazy, and Birkenstock is dropping a skincare line, in this week’s Fabulous Links!

M.A.C. is coming to Ulta online and in stores in May and June. In time for all your wedding season needs! (WWD) And p.s. You can now get nyakio skincare at Ulta, too. I am still obsessed with nyakio Hydrating Face Oil with Kola Nut! (I don’t see it available anymore, but they have three other oils to try: a brightening oil with marula and neroli, a maracuja and yangu soothing oil, and a manketti and mafura anti-aging oil)

Hillary Clinton got new hair (with bangs!), and the World Wide Web approves! I like this look on Charlotte and Aden’s grandma! (Huffington Post)

You loved their sensible sandals, now try their…skincare?! Birkenstock, the German brand known for their hippy-ish, cork-soled sandals, announced this week it is dropping a skincare line. The products contain suberin, a substance in cork oak extract with anti-aging effects. Since the brand has been working with cork for about 240 years, maybe they know what they’re talking about. Look for Birkenstock Cosmetics this fall. (WWD)

This week on the blog, I reviewed Alastin Skincare. Once the snow gets going, I’ll post The Essence of My Neighborhood photo essay I did for photography class.

Target Pledges Safer Beauty Products

I was going to include this news in last weekend’s Fabulous Links, but thought it was worthy of its own post. Retail Dive has reported Target announced ambitious plans to make its beauty and personal care products safer by 2020. Target will strive for greater ingredient transparency, as well. As if we need another reason to love beauty shopping at Target!

This new initiative applies to Target favorites like Sonia Kashuk and Pixi Beauty, and national brands, too. Jennifer Silberman, Target’s chief sustainability officer, told Allure, “We know our guests are becoming increasingly concerned with chemicals in products they use in, on, or around their bodies, and they trust us to provide better choices.”

Target is taking a multi-pronged approach with its initiative:

Transparency: Achieve transparency about all ingredients in product categories, including beauty and personal care, by 2020.

Chemical Management: Formulate beauty, personal care, baby care, and household cleaning products without phthalates, parabens, formaldehyde or formaldehyde donors, or nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs) by 2020.

Innovation: Invest $5 billion in green chemistry innovation by 2022.

Target’s safety and transparency plan comes at a time when the cosmetics and personal care industries have been rethinking their ingredient strategy. Last month, Unilever, parent company of brands such as Caress, Dove, and Suave, announced it would disclose details about the fragrances in its personal care products. “We are committed to ensuring people have the information they need to choose the right product for them. We believe that providing this transparency will help build further trust in Unilever and our brands,” David Blanchard, Unilever’s Chief Research and Development Officer, said in a statement.

The government is also worried about ingredient safety. In 2015, Sens. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Susan Collins (R-ME) introduced the Personal Care Products Safety Act, an amendment to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, which has not been updated much since 1938.

This legislation would require companies to register their manufacturing facilities with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and submit to the agency statements about the ingredients in their products and how much of each ingredient is in each product. The agency must also review the safety of five ingredients per year, and can set the standard for safe use of an ingredient.

If you were a fan of Schoolhouse Rock back in the day, you can track the bill’s progress here. Allure did an excellent piece on the Personal Care Products Safety Act back in October.

Tell me. Do you look even look at the ingredients list on your beauty products? I admit, I don’t, even after blogging about things like the Environmental Working Group and Skin Deep. Let’s talk greener, safer beauty in the comments!

Blushington and Kelly Rutherford

I mentioned in the most recent Fabulous Links that Blushington on the Upper East Side had free makeup applications last Wednesday.* They also had trunk shows for Kelly Rutherford’s new jewelry line and a cool workout wear store called Bandier. Of course, I had to be there.

First, the makeup by Neah. Remember her? Neah prepped my skin using Erborian’s Pink Perfect 4-in-1 Primer followed by Erborian CC Cream. Then she used Becca Aqua Luminous Perfecting Concealer and Celestial Bronzing Veil from Kevyn Aucoin in Tropical Days. She also used the Bronzing Veil as eye shadow. Browns make blue eyes pop! Neah used Kevyn Aucoin The Essential Mascara to define my lashes.

To give my cheeks a rosy glow, Neah dabbed on Stila Aqua Glow Water Color Blush in Rosewater. She completed the look with The Kevyn Aucoin Flesh Tone Lip Pencil topped with Jouer Moisturizing Lip Gloss in Nude. Check out the finished gorgeous:

Kelly Rutherford’s jewelry line was beautiful. Very simple and elegant. She has matching necklaces, bracelets, and earrings in yellow gold. I love the hearts. I’m a romantic that way. (Sorry for the picture quality. I’m still mastering my new camera.)

And yes, I had the chance to meet Kelly. She was lovely! She told me that in a few weeks, her jewelry will be available at a store called Broken English. She also mentioned she might like to do some rings and pieces in rose gold. I’d be down with a heart necklace in rose gold.

I also think the pieces are perfect for monogramming. The jewelry is priced between about $50 to about $450.

And check out the workout wear available at Bandier. What I love about Bandier is that they have lesser known brands as well as some more mainstream ones. Here are two cute patterned leggings that caught my attention. This is the Ultra Silk Bloom Print Legging by Ultracor, available here. It has a matching top, available here.

Below is the Ditsy Yoga Pant, from an Australian brand called The Upside. You can pick it up here. It has a matching top, too, available here.

Tell me. Do you like to keep your jewelry simple, or do you subscribe to the go big or go home school of adornment? Lets talk jewels in the comments!

*I did not pay for the makeover. Blushington offered free makeup applications all day to celebrate the Kelly Rutherford and Bandier trunk show.

Unboxing The Zoe Report Box of Style x Sunday Riley Winter 2016-17 Box

The folks at The Zoe Report Box of Style graciously sent me the Winter 2016-17 box for a test drive.* The items were gorgeous! The card stock of the box was nice and thick.

The Rachel Zoe Box of Style

Everything came beautifully wrapped

You get a booklet that tells you about the items in your Box of Style, and tips from Rachel Zoe on how to, well, style them. You get beauty tips from RZ, too.

The Box of Style booklet

Let’s look at the beauty stuff first. The reason I wanted to try this Box of Style was because the email I got had Box of Style x Sunday Riley as the subject line, and I’ve been dying to try Sunday Riley skin care for awhile. I’ll do a separate post at the end of the week and share my thoughts about it.

Sunday Riley Tidal Brightening Enzyme Water Cream, Viva la Juicy perfume, and Clinique Color Pop lipstick and primer in Berry Pop

I love the candle, hat, and card case. I also love that the candle and card case were created exclusively for Box of Style. I’ve put the candle in my room. It smells like a pine forest. Pine reminds me of the holidays, my favorite time of year.

D.L. & Co. scented candle, Soia & Kyo Olivia cap, and Dagne Dover leather card case

And the card case has room for business cards, or for your ID and money if you just want to run to the store. It also keeps things organized when you go out at night, and want to carry a smaller bag.

Inside the card case

The card case has another pocket on the back.

I tend to gravitate toward smaller, under-the-radar brands, so it was fun to discover D.L. & Co., Soia & Kyo, and Dagne Dover. I’d never heard of them before, so I checked out their web sites. They make beautiful things!

The ‘hero item’ is the ‘Zoey’ necklace by Dylanlex. Its look is pretty timeless, if you ask me. It has an adjustable clasp, so it can be styled in a couple different ways. Like the candle and card case, it was created exclusively for Box of Style.

Dylanlex ‘Zoey’ necklace with a cashmere turtleneck

Dylanlex ‘Zoey’ necklace with a flowy top

Dylanlex ‘Zoey’ necklace as a choker with a black cowl-neck dress

I’d never heard of Dylanlex before, either, so I went onto their web site as well. The Liam bracelet and Sway brooch have that vintage vibe I’m into. They have gorgeous rings, too.

Tell me. Do you like the subscription lifestyle/beauty boxes (eg., Birchbox or Memebox) that seem to be so popular? Do you think they are worth the money? Let’s talk discovery commerce in the comments!

2016 Holiday Gift Guide: For Her

I loved putting together my holiday gift guide and vegan beauty gift guide last year. I had a blast putting this year’s guide together, too! As always, I tried to include things in a range of price points. Who knows? You may even get some ideas about what you want from Santa…

Makeup

I love Bobbi Brown. Her colors are gorgeous and her products go on like a dream and last and last. This ‘Bobbi’s Beauty Book’ palette with six eye shadows, blush, bronzer, and lip gloss takes girls-on-the-go from day to night.

Remember last year, when I got the K.I.S.S..I.N.G. mini lipstick charms from Charlotte TIlbury? This year, Charlotte came out with lipstick charms in her Matte Revolution formula. It includes Red Carpet Red, a classic Holiywood red, Amazing Grace, a pretty pink inspired by Grace Kelly, and Very Victoria, a nod to Victoria Beckham’s signature taupe nude lip.

Urban Decay dropped the mic when they came out with their Naked Ultimate Basics eye shadow palette this fall. The looks the UD’er on your list could create with this are endless.

Makeup Brushes

I think makeup brushes are almost more important than the makeup itself. I mean, makeup washes off with soap and water, right? If you use a good primer and good tools, your makeup will always look amazing.

Check out this basic brush set from Bobbi Brown. Its pretty much everything the makeup maven on your list will need, and they will last her a lifetime. I love my Bobbi Brown blush and eye shadow brushes, and I’ve had them for years.

Main Image - Bobbi Brown Basic Brush Collection ($252 Value)

I get it. Not every one wants to drop $200 on a set of makeup brushes. How about the Sephora Collection Face the Day Full Face Brush Set? Its got a powder brush, foundation brush, large shadow brush, large brow brush, and smudge brush in a trifold case. BTW, I am also loving this ‘Tools of the Trade’ brush set from Sephora.

Nails

I’m obsessed with the Netflix series The Crown. The girl who also binge-watched the adventures of young Queen Elizabeth 2 and her party-hearty kid sister, Margaret, may love the royalty-inspired ‘Her Majesty’s Nail Color Set’ from Deborah Lippmann.

Main Image - Deborah Lippmann Her Majesty Nail Color Set (Limited Edition) ($108 Value)

This EVENTful Nail Lacquer set from butterLODON is another cute option.

Hair

If your niece/daughter/grandaughter is a regular at her local blow out bar, she may be into the Let It Blow! Drybar to Go Ultimate Travel Essentials Kit. You get a travel hair dryer, travel hair brush, dry shampoo, dry conditioner, and hair clips, all in a cute travel pouch.

Another option? The Spread Cheer and Perfect Hair set from Living Proof. You know I love Living Proof . And their dry shampoo won an Allure Best of Beauty award.

Fragrance

You know me and scent. It’s complicated. But if you have a fragrance lover in your life, she may like this Jo Malone London cologne collection. She’ll get five of Jo Malone’s signature scents, and she can mix and match. Bonus: it comes in a pretty gift box. (I suck at gift wrapping and hate it.)

Main Image - Jo Malone™ Cologne Collection

Or if your giftee is like my grandmother who loves scented candles, how about this gorgeous votive candle set from celeb-fave brand diptyque?

If all else fails, Sephora, Nordstrom, and Ulta have tons of great ideas for the beauty buffs on your list. And if you need stocking stuffers, I’ve got you.

I am looking to get more into photography in 2017, so I have asked for a camera and photography lessons for the holidays. What are you hoping to find under the tree?

This month, I’m taking the 25 Days of Christmas Photo a Day Challenge on Instagram, courtesy of blogger and shutterbug extraordinaire LaShawn Wiltz of Everyday Eyecandy. I’ll be posting pics daily inspired by Christmas- and holiday-themed prompts, using the hashtag #eyecandyholidaychallenge.

Makeup: Blushington UES

Its been a cray week. On Monday, I went to a launch event for a new laser used for skin resurfacing. And on Wednesday I had two back-to-back holiday parties in the city.

In the middle of all this, I did revisions for a piece for a new client and wrote a story for a regular client, The Doctor Will See You Now. By Friday, I needed a serious break.

So this morning, I treated myself to a complimentary makeup application at the new Blushington location in New York City on the Upper East Side. I chose the Everyday Pure & Simple look. Here’s the finished result:

My finished look!

My finished look!

My makeup artist Neah used three products that I particularly loved: Jouer Essential Lip Enhancer lip primer; Julie Hewett Los Angeles lipstick in ‘Jacqueline’, a pink fuchsia; and the Stila Eyes Are the Window eye shadow palette in ‘Mind’, which is similar to Urban Decay’s new Naked Ultimate Basics palette. The whole look was very soft and pretty!

The lip enhancer helped my lipstick last and kept my lips moisturized, even while walking around freezing, windy Manhattan. And I love the ‘Jacqueline’ lipstick, inspired by Mrs. Kennedy herself. I think it would be especially nice in the summer with a tan.

Blushington sells the products they use. It took major self control to get out of there without buying anything! You can learn more about Blushington here.

I rarely get my makeup done by a pro, except for a real treat. (The full makeup service, normally $65, was free to celebrate the opening of the new location! I love free!) Do you get your makeup done often? If so, have you picked up any tips or tricks along the way that you incorporated into your regular routine? Let’s talk makeup hacks in the comments!

SocialVend

SocialVend's vendmini

SocialVend’s Vendmini

I got an email right before Thanksgiving from a London-based company called SocialVend. Usually I just delete pre-holiday emails, but the subject line “Free Make-Up vending machines to launch across the U.K.” was too intriguing to ignore.

SocialVend sells these cute little machines called Vendminis. These babies are integrated with Snapchat, Twitter, and Instagram; brands can use them for giveaways, marketing campaigns, and in-store sampling.

Here’s how it works. When consumers answer questions or take action on social media, for example, posting to Instagram using a brand’s hashtag, they are rewarded with free makeup goodies.

Vendminis are coming stateside, too! A number of these machines have been bought for shipping to the U.S. by the middle of January, Andrew Theodore, CEO of SocialVend, told me in an email. As a matter of fact, the Vendmini made its debut at AdTech NY in early November.

“We have been in communication with major cosmetics brands that operate both in the U.S. and the U.K.,” Theodore said. However, he declined to specify which brands expressed interest in the Vendmini or to comment on their campaigns.

Brands don’t make money from these machines. “Instead, they gain exposure on social media, raise brand awareness, allow potential customers to try their products, and obtain valuable information about consumer behavior,” said Theodore.

So keep your eyes peeled in 2017 for these machines. I’ll be looking for them and sampling away! Are you like me, and love to try free samples? Let me know in the comments!

This month, I am doing National Photo Posting Month, a.k.a. #naphopomo, over on Instagram. This challenge involves posting at least one photo daily, and my photos will celebrate something I am thankful for. Since its coming down the home stretch, I’ll post some of my fave pics here towards the end of the week.
