Target Pledges Safer Beauty Products

I was going to include this news in last weekend’s Fabulous Links, but thought it was worthy of its own post. Retail Dive has reported Target announced ambitious plans to make its beauty and personal care products safer by 2020. Target will strive for greater ingredient transparency, as well. As if we need another reason to love beauty shopping at Target!

This new initiative applies to Target favorites like Sonia Kashuk and Pixi Beauty, and national brands, too. Jennifer Silberman, Target’s chief sustainability officer, told Allure, “We know our guests are becoming increasingly concerned with chemicals in products they use in, on, or around their bodies, and they trust us to provide better choices.”

Target is taking a multi-pronged approach with its initiative:

Transparency: Achieve transparency about all ingredients in product categories, including beauty and personal care, by 2020.

Chemical Management: Formulate beauty, personal care, baby care, and household cleaning products without phthalates, parabens, formaldehyde or formaldehyde donors, or nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs) by 2020.

Innovation: Invest $5 billion in green chemistry innovation by 2022.

Target’s safety and transparency plan comes at a time when the cosmetics and personal care industries have been rethinking their ingredient strategy. Last month, Unilever, parent company of brands such as Caress, Dove, and Suave, announced it would disclose details about the fragrances in its personal care products. “We are committed to ensuring people have the information they need to choose the right product for them. We believe that providing this transparency will help build further trust in Unilever and our brands,” David Blanchard, Unilever’s Chief Research and Development Officer, said in a statement.

The government is also worried about ingredient safety. In 2015, Sens. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Susan Collins (R-ME) introduced the Personal Care Products Safety Act, an amendment to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, which has not been updated much since 1938.

This legislation would require companies to register their manufacturing facilities with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and submit to the agency statements about the ingredients in their products and how much of each ingredient is in each product. The agency must also review the safety of five ingredients per year, and can set the standard for safe use of an ingredient.

If you were a fan of Schoolhouse Rock back in the day, you can track the bill’s progress here. Allure did an excellent piece on the Personal Care Products Safety Act back in October.

Tell me. Do you look even look at the ingredients list on your beauty products? I admit, I don’t, even after blogging about things like the Environmental Working Group and Skin Deep. Let’s talk greener, safer beauty in the comments!

This year, I’m doing the Eyecandy Project 52 photography challenge. Every week, we have to take a picture inspired by a prompt, such as From Above. Some prompts are relevant to the time of year, some are more evergreen. I’m thinking I’ll post my more successful efforts here about once a quarter. Wish me luck!

Product Review: OPI Infinite Shine

OPI Inifinite Shine Mani in ‘Miami Beet’ Day 1

Guys, I’m so disappointed! I tried OPI’s Infinite Shine formula* and it did not have the staying power I was hoping for. It was so pretty on day 1 (see above). Now check out day 7 (below).

OPI Infinite Shine manicure in ‘Miami Beet’ Day 7

I had the nail lady use the three-step Infinite Shine system: special base coat, then the polish, then the special top coat. I don’t know what went wrong. I usually love OPI, and don’t have this much chipping, even with the regular formula. The only thing I can think of is the lady left my nails a little longer than usual, which couldn’t have helped.

Essie Gel Couture is still the longest-lasting polish I’ve ever tried. That’s why I had such high hopes for OPI. Sad trombone.

Have you tried OPI Infinite Shine and/or Essie Gel Couture? I’d be curious to hear your thoughts on them. Let’s talk nails in the comments!

Product Review: Essie Gel Couture

Essie Gel Couture in Take Me to Thread

Guys, I recently tried Essie Gel Couture, and I’m in love!* I have never had a mani last this long. Ever. What I love about it is that you get the durability and shine of gel polish but you don’t need to set it with a light and you remove it with regular nail polish remover. No need to soak your poor nails in acetone.

Check out the Day 8 photo below, taken right before I removed it. Pretty great, huh?

Day 8. Not a chip in sight!

It’s a two-step system: first you apply two coats of the polish, then the special Gel Couture top coat. Essie’s Gel Couture comes in so many colors, you’re sure to find something you like. The only bad news? At my local salon, they charge $5 extra for Gel Couture. So it can add up.

You can buy Essie Gel Couture online at Ulta. You can get the special top coat here.

Have you tried Essie Gel Couture? If you have, tell me about your experience in the comments.

Also, I started my photography class last week. I’ll try to post here about my progress.

2016 Holiday Gift Guide: For Her

I loved putting together my holiday gift guide and vegan beauty gift guide last year. I had a blast putting this year’s guide together, too! As always, I tried to include things in a range of price points. Who knows? You may even get some ideas about what you want from Santa…

Makeup

I love Bobbi Brown. Her colors are gorgeous and her products go on like a dream and last and last. This ‘Bobbi’s Beauty Book’ palette with six eye shadows, blush, bronzer, and lip gloss takes girls-on-the-go from day to night.

Remember last year, when I got the K.I.S.S..I.N.G. mini lipstick charms from Charlotte TIlbury? This year, Charlotte came out with lipstick charms in her Matte Revolution formula. It includes Red Carpet Red, a classic Holiywood red, Amazing Grace, a pretty pink inspired by Grace Kelly, and Very Victoria, a nod to Victoria Beckham’s signature taupe nude lip.

Urban Decay dropped the mic when they came out with their Naked Ultimate Basics eye shadow palette this fall. The looks the UD’er on your list could create with this are endless.

Makeup Brushes

I think makeup brushes are almost more important than the makeup itself. I mean, makeup washes off with soap and water, right? If you use a good primer and good tools, your makeup will always look amazing.

Check out this basic brush set from Bobbi Brown. Its pretty much everything the makeup maven on your list will need, and they will last her a lifetime. I love my Bobbi Brown blush and eye shadow brushes, and I’ve had them for years.

I get it. Not every one wants to drop $200 on a set of makeup brushes. How about the Sephora Collection Face the Day Full Face Brush Set? Its got a powder brush, foundation brush, large shadow brush, large brow brush, and smudge brush in a trifold case. BTW, I am also loving this ‘Tools of the Trade’ brush set from Sephora.

Nails

I’m obsessed with the Netflix series The Crown. The girl who also binge-watched the adventures of young Queen Elizabeth 2 and her party-hearty kid sister, Margaret, may love the royalty-inspired ‘Her Majesty’s Nail Color Set’ from Deborah Lippmann.

This EVENTful Nail Lacquer set from butterLODON is another cute option.

Hair

If your niece/daughter/grandaughter is a regular at her local blow out bar, she may be into the Let It Blow! Drybar to Go Ultimate Travel Essentials Kit. You get a travel hair dryer, travel hair brush, dry shampoo, dry conditioner, and hair clips, all in a cute travel pouch.

Another option? The Spread Cheer and Perfect Hair set from Living Proof. You know I love Living Proof . And their dry shampoo won an Allure Best of Beauty award.

Fragrance

You know me and scent. It’s complicated. But if you have a fragrance lover in your life, she may like this Jo Malone London cologne collection. She’ll get five of Jo Malone’s signature scents, and she can mix and match. Bonus: it comes in a pretty gift box. (I suck at gift wrapping and hate it.)

Or if your giftee is like my grandmother who loves scented candles, how about this gorgeous votive candle set from celeb-fave brand diptyque?

If all else fails, Sephora, Nordstrom, and Ulta have tons of great ideas for the beauty buffs on your list. And if you need stocking stuffers, I’ve got you.

I am looking to get more into photography in 2017, so I have asked for a camera and photography lessons for the holidays. What are you hoping to find under the tree?

This month, I’m taking the 25 Days of Christmas Photo a Day Challenge on Instagram, courtesy of blogger and shutterbug extraordinaire LaShawn Wiltz of Everyday Eyecandy. I’ll be posting pics daily inspired by Christmas- and holiday-themed prompts, using the hashtag #eyecandyholidaychallenge.

Makeup: Rose Gold

Some of my rose gold favorites!

My rose gold picks

I love rose gold anything, especially makeup. It’ll be perfect for all those holiday parties in a few weeks. After all, rose gold looks best with a little sparkle.

Here’s what I’m loving:*

Maybelline The Blushed Nudes palette. At nine dollars, this palette is great if you are a little shy about rose gold and not sure if it looks good on you. (target.com) Of course, if you want to go high end, Urban Decay’s Naked3 palette is a perennial beauty editor and blogger fave. (sephora.com)

NARS Dual-Intensity Eye Shadow in Europa. This soft rose gold is so pretty. If you want a deeper shade, NARS came out with a color called Rigel this fall. (nordstrom.com)

Downtown girls may be into ColourPop. Check out the brand’s eye shadows in Sequin and DGAF. (Hey, I didn’t pick the names.) They are only five bucks a piece! (colourpop.com) NYX Cosmetics Roll-On Shimmer in Salmon is a pretty take on rose gold, with a name you won’t have to lower your voice to repeat in public. (ulta.com)

I have been dying to try Urban Decay lipsticks forever, especially since they recently reformulated them, then had a big relaunch. So when I choosing a lipstick to include in this post, I went to Ulta and bought Ex-Girlfriend, a sheer, rosy shimmer. You can wear it alone or over a lip liner, or swipe it on over your go-to pink or beige nude lipstick. It’s like a highlighter for your lips that way. (sephora.com)

My favorite Essie nail polish of all time happens to be Buy Me A Cameo, a beautiful rose gold. It’s looks particularly good when I have a tan in the summer. I get it all year round, though. (target.com)

Are you as into rose gold as I am? Share your rose gold picks in the comments! And BTW, have you tried stuff from ColourPop? If so, I am curious about what you thought. It’s supposedly a hip, “It Girl” brand, and I want to know if I’m missing anything.

The #everydayphotoaday challenge over on Instagram rolls on. I am now officially an iPhoneography ninja!

Indie Beauty Expo NY 2016

This week was the annual Indie Beauty Expo NY. This showcase for up-and-coming indie beauty brands was founded by celebrity esthetician Jillian Wright. Over the past few years it has really grown! This year it was held at the Metropolitan Pavilion, home of The Makeup Show NYC.

I went into the city twice: Wednesday for the press preview, and Thursday for the actual event. I’ll be trying out the stuff I got, and sharing reviews with you over the next few weeks. But for now, I thought I’d share some of the fun pics I took at the show! First my press pass:

IBEpresspass

This big unicorn was at the Pacifica booth:

Pacificaunicorn

They had a photo booth where you could take pictures with funny hats:

ibeny2016

Near the entrance/exit, they had a station where you could write “what indie beauty means to you” on a card, then pin it to a heart-shaped board: To me, indie beauty means entrepreneurship and innovation.

The founders of these small companies work hard to spread the word about what they are doing. Many of the booths at the show were manned by the brands’ founders themselves! And each brand is trying to put a unique spin on beauty and wellness. That’s tough to do in such a crowded market.

Do you look for small, indie brands when beauty shopping? If so, which ones do you like? Let’s talk indie beauty in the comments!

Update: Essie Gel Setter Top Coat

Remember when I raved last week about Essie Gel Setter Top Coat?*

My Essie mani in Raspberry with Gel Setter top coat

My Essie mani in Raspberry with Gel Setter top coat (8/19)

Well, here is my manicure from last week, at day 8.

Essie Gel Setter, Day 8

Essie Gel Setter, Day 8 (8/26)

Sorry the pic is not the best, but I will say, I am a little disappointed with the chipping. It’s still pretty shiny, but I thought it should have lasted longer. Especially since this was a pretty typical week for me: house cleaning, cat care, some freelance medicine/health journalist stuff, and the Indie Beauty Expo in New York. (More on that in a later post!)

And this is pretty much what my mani always looks like on day 8, no matter what top coat I use. I asked the manicurist cut my nails fairly short, too.

What do you think? Should this have lasted longer? What do you do to prolong the life of your manicure?

Essie Gel Setter and polish in Turquoise and Caicos (l) and Aruba Blue (r)

Essie Gel Setter top coat and polish in Turquoise & Caicos (l) and Aruba Blue (r)

My latest find? Essie Gel Setter top coat!* This stuff gives your mani gorgeous shine and prevents chipping through just about anything, including a marathon basil-picking and pesto sauce-making session!

The best part is that it comes off with regular nail polish remover. No soaking in acetone or UV lamp necessary. The brand says you can use it over any Essie polish, but I’m sure you can use it with other brands, too!

I got a mani today: Essie polish in Raspberry with Essie Gel Setter top coat. I’ll update this post next week to show you how long Gel Setter lasts!

Nails: Sinful Colors Shamrock Out

Sinful Colors Shamrock Out: (l to r) Happy Ending, Exotic Green, San Francisco, and Feeling Lucky

Shamrock Out (l to r) Happy Ending, Exotic Green, San Francisco, and Feeling Lucky

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Sinful Colors sent me a few of the colors from their St. Patrick’s Day Shamrock Out collection.* How fun are these? And at about $2.00 a bottle, you can afford to stock up!

I love the idea of the glitter-y top coat Feeling Lucky over Exotic Green or Happy Ending. Maybe as an accent nail. Have fun with it. St. Patrick’s Day is all about fun!

You can buy Sinful Colors at Walmart, Target, and Walgreens. You can see the entire Shamrock Out collection here.
