Skin Care: 7th Heaven Coconut Peel-Off Face Mask

Hi all! Are we on day 104? Or day 105? I can’t remember. Self care and sticking to my skin care routine have helped keep me sane. Recently I was sent some face masks to try from a Welsh company called 7th Heaven.* The masks are certified cruelty free and vegan approved. They even have the Leaping Bunny symbol on the back of the packet.

Please excuse the IPhone pic and my Quarantine Barbie roots. My hair appointment on June 30 cannot come soon enough!

I got the coconut and clay peel-off mask, the charcoal detox bubble mask, and the Dead Sea peel-off mask. I tried the coconut mask, and LOVED it! The packet says it nourishes and hydrates, and that it does. It smells like coconut and yogurt, and has a yogurt-like consistency. You tear open the pouch, apply it to your (clean) face, and wait a few minutes for it to dry. Then the fun begins!

You get to peel it off! How satisfying is that?! It’s almost like Baby Foot for your face! Spending a lot of time indoors with the A/C has made my skin a little dry. But when I peeled off the mask, my skin did feel more hydrated.

I look forward to trying the other masks, too. The charcoal detox bubble mask and Dead Sea peel-off mask are for purifying your skin, so they may be good after spending time outdoors on a humid day, when you are all sweaty.

You can pick up 7th Heaven masks online at Walmart here.

Hair: Living Proof Color Care Shampoo

Guys, I’m so bummed. I wanted to love Living Proof’s new Color Care shampoo. I really did. But it didn’t happen. It kept my hair color from fading, so in that sense it did what it said it would. But it completely dried my hair out, so it was like straw.

If you’ve ever seen The Wizard of Oz, I had a Ray Bolger (The Scarecrow) situation going on. I wanted to ask The Wizard for a brain. There is nothing about this shampoo that would make me buy it again, or try the Color Care conditioner or glaze.

I’ve been in the market for a new shampoo and conditioner since Alterna discontinued their Caviar Blonde shampoo and conditioner and I (eek!) ran out of the shampoo. When I heard Living Proof had come out with its new Color Care line, I couldn’t wait to try it after I got my highlights done about a month ago.* I used it twice before I realized it was too drying for my fine, naturally wavy hair.

Now I’m upset because I spent almost $40 (shampoo + tax + shipping), so I feel like I’m stuck, at least until I’ve used more of it. Have you ever had this problem with a beauty product you bought, but didn’t like once you tried it? Commiserate with me in the comments and tell me about it! What did you do?

And BTW, has anyone ever tried the Alterna Infinite Color Hold line?

Blend & Swatch

Legally Blonde Bend And Snap GIF - Find & Share on GIPHY

Today, let’s talk about the Facebook group called Blend & Swatch, brought to you by the lovely ladies at Allure magazine. The group gets its name from the Bend & Snap scene in Legally Blonde. If you are as obsessed with makeup and skin care as I am, you need this group in your life!

Women of all ages log on to trade makeup and skin care tips or share product reviews. Sometimes members just ask people’s opinion about a particular shade of lipstick, or post a selfie if they are having an awesome hair-and-makeup day. Allure editors also post their thoughts about what’s going on in beauty.

What I really love about Blend & Swatch is the feeling of community you get while scrolling through the feed. It’s sisterhood at its best: women from ages 20 to 50+ supporting one another and sharing information, no b.s. allowed. It kind of reminds me of a bunch of guys hanging out and talking sports.

Members are of different backgrounds and ethnicities, but they speak a common language: beauty. They treat each other with kindness and respect. That’s especially important right now, with so much negativity online. It’s too easy to hide behind a fake user name or profile and criticize people. Shaming others on social media is ugly and unnecessary.

Blend & Swatch debuted in August 2017. When I was thinking about what I wanted to say about the group, I went back and looked at some of the more heartfelt posts.

Maria D. said, “It’s the only Facebook group I belong to that feels like a bunch of girlfriends sitting around in fuzzy slippers talking about makeup and skin care, but also talking about real life concerns. I love it because I can read the posts and have my relax time!”

Marinda H. put it this way, “Just wanted to tell you all that you are beautiful, and I’m so thankful for each and every person here. You inspire me every day! The love for makeup and skin care has united some of the loveliest people I have ever known!”

I couldn’t have said it better myself.

Tell me. Are you a member of any FB groups you love for their positive, upbeat vibe? I wouldn’t want to miss out on anything!

Makeup: NYX Cosmetics Soft Matte Lip Creme and Innisfree Brow Pencil

NYX Soft Matte Lip Creme and Suede Lip Liner in Copenhagen and Innisfree brow pencil

It was that kind of week. I had a job interview on Monday, which is always a little nerve wracking. After that, I just couldn’t get it together. I was wondering if Mercury was in retrograde! So by Friday, I definitely needed a little retail therapy, beauty blogger style.

I went to the NYX Cosmetics flagship store and the new Innisfree store in NYC’s Union Square. I have been curious about NYX’s Soft Matte Lip Creme, and this piece on the Allure web site about plum lipsticks that look good on everyone got me all excited. I’ve never worn plum lipstick before, so I wanted to try a drugstore brand to see if I liked the look.

If you’ve never tried them, NYX has great lipsticks and lip liners at a very reasonable price. Less than $10 each! My total bill was only $11.44 for the lip creme and lip liner.

I got the lip liner and lip creme in Copenhagen, a rich, cool plum. I wore them today while running errands. (Nothing says “beauty blogger off duty” like a bold berry lip paired with a yoga outfit and a baseball hat. I was road testing, people!)

I found them surprisingly comfortable. Usually I don’t like matte anything, because the formula is too drying, but this was softer and creamier than a liquid lipstick. Maybe that’s why it’s called a matte lip creme? And I’m sure the lip liner helped, but the lip creme has staying power.

And the store is cool, too. It was a little crowded, but the salesgirl was very helpful. And they offer beauty lessons, with names like ‘Brow Down’ and ‘Makeup 101’. If you are a NYX fan, check it out when you are in NYC!

Next stop was Innisfree, which is right across the street from NYX. Innisfree is an all-natural beauty brand from (where else?) South Korea. Many of the (mostly) organic ingredients are sourced from nearby Jeju Island.

The United National Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (you may have seen the acronym UNESCO) has designated Jeju Island a World Natural Heritage, World Biosphere Reserve, and Global Geopark site. It’s full of natural ingredients that are great for your skin.

I have more skincare than should be legal for one woman, so I decided on a brow pencil. Don’t get me wrong, I love my Lancome brow pencil. But I wanted to see the new Innisfree store and retail therapy was the order of the day.

I tested the brow penci, too. I like that the tip of the pencil is small, so you can fill in your brows and it looks soft and natural. Perfect for daytime. And they have a few different colors, so you’ll be sure to find your perfect match.

Innisfree Union Square is only 10 days old. The walls of the store are covered floor-to-ceiling with plants and greenery. Most of the other surfaces are polished wood. Innisfree has it all: skincare, makeup, and even home fragrances. They will definitely see my debit card again.

Speaking of debit cards, the brow pencil was only $10 plus tax. Not bad.

Tell me. What trends and colors are you dying to try this fall? Let’s talk autumn wish lists in the comments!

Product Review: Eavara Skin Care

Eavara Botanical Facial Cleanser and Age-Defying Moisturizer

I wanted to jump on here today to tell you about Eavara, a skin care brand I have been using  all summer.* The company is based in Hawai’i, hence its tagline, “Discover Paradise.”

I love the Botanical Cleanser and Age-Defying Moisturizer. The cleanser contains green tea, vitamin E, coconut oil, and tamanu oil. The antioxidants in green tea help fight free radical formation, vitamin E promotes collagen production, and tamanu oil and coconut oil are great natural moisturizers. It really gets my skin squeaky clean.

The moisturizer keeps your skin soft and supple with coconut, kukui, macadamia, avocado, rose, and jojoba oils. It also contains shea butter and hyaluronic acid to keep skin hydrated, and vitamin E. I love the smell!

Eavara says its products are all natural and organic. According to the company, they are free of parabens, sulfates, phthalates, colorants, and fragrances.

Tell me. What skin care brands have you been loving this summer?

Product Review: Nebo Naturals

Nebo Naturals Bee Quenched Facial Nectar and Bee Bright Facial Toner

It’s not everyday that someone reaches out to you via Twitter and offers to send you a basket of goodies. But Elena and her team at Nebo Naturals all-natural skincare were kind enough to do just that!

They sent me the Bee Quenched Facial Nectar and the Bee Bright Facial Toner pictured above. They also sent me the Bee Smooth Body Scrub with yummy ingredients like brown sugar, coconut sugar, and honey.

I love the facial toner and nectar. They leave my skin feeling clean and soft, which is a tall order after going for a walk or running around outside taking pictures in the humidity of a New Jersey summer.

The toner has things like rice wine, witch hazel, and peppermint oil in it to brighten your skin and even out your skin tone. (And how pretty is the blue bottle?) The facial nectar has sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, and vitamin E oil to keep your skin nourished and hydrated.

I also love the body scrub. It smells amazing, and my skin feels really soft when I dry off after a shower.

Nebo Naturals is a New Hampshire-based company that makes its products in small (micro) batches from all-natural, organic ingredients sourced locally. The cute bee logo is because the brand apparently has its own apiary! In addition to the great stuff Elena sent me, Nebo also makes cute soaps, lip balm, and body lotion.

I love companies like Nebo Naturals or Lime & Lotus Organics that have a cool story and make products in small batches out of natural ingredients. Don’t you?

Product Review: Reviews.com

About a month ago, I got an email from a young woman named Jacqueline Ma. She told me how much she loves the blog, and how she sent it to her mom, who loves it, too! Thanks, ladies!

Anyway, Ma came across my blog when she saw my review of Le Petit Marseillais Shower Creme body wash. Ma works for a consumer resource web site called reviews.com. The site also reviewed Le Petit Marseillais, and picked the orange blossom scent as the best body wash for everyday use.

I was very touched by Ma’s kind words about my blog, so I went right to reviews.com. What a resource! The site reviews all types of consumer products, from beauty products to pet products, to everything in between.

“We try to write an unbiased review, where we really take the time to get into the nitty gritty of each product,” Ma told me in a follow-up call. The content team does its research by talking to experts and analyzing ingredients, said Ma. They do a methodical write up of each product and identify the best options available in that product category.

For example, to pick to the best body washes, the reviews.com team spent six weeks discussing ingredients with three dermatologists and personally testing 21 popular body washes. They found high quality products free of harsh cleansers like sodium lauryl sulfate, but full of moisturizers and conditioners that left them feeling clean.

I am so glad I discovered reviews.com. I think it’s a particularly good tool for researching products in a category you have not tried before, like when you want to switch to natural deodorant or find a good mass market brand hair oil.

Tell me. When you need to do online research about consumer products, what resource do you turn to? Do you “crowd source” on social media, or do you have a favorite web site? Let’s talk research and product reviews in the comments!

Skincare: Lime & Lotus Organics Daily Face Cream

I recently got an email from Dr. Stephanie Zgraggen, a holistic medicine practitioner from Charleston, SC. Zgraggen told me that as a holistic medicine doctor, she wants to recommend skincare products that are as natural as possible to her patients. However, she found products on the market contained too many harmful chemicals for her liking. So she created her own all-natural skincare line, Lime & Lotus Organics.

The line includes a peppermint facial toner, charcoal face mask, lavender sugar scrub, and a face cream. Zgraggen was nice enough to send me a jar of the face cream.* It feels great on my skin, and smells delicious! I love to smell it as I lie in bed at night and read before I go to sleep.

The Daily Face Cream contains shea butter, Bulgarian rose essential oil, rosemary essential oil, and coconut oil. In other words, all things that are great for your skin. And Zgraggen has generously offered you a deal! Between now and July 31, type in the code CLOBUONO at checkout, and get 20 percent off your order at Lime and Lotus Organics!

If anyone tries any of the other products in the line, please let me know. The facial toner and the sugar scrub sound incredible!

Product Review: DermaE Vitamin C Skincare Collection

DermaE Vitamin C Skincare

Between my trip to Florida and the unseasonably cold spring we had in New Jersey, my skin looks a little dull and washed out. The folks at DermaE came to the rescue with their new Vitamin C Collection.*

You know I love DermaE. I’ve talked about it here and here. I’m still obsessed with microdermabrasion scrub! This time around, I tried the Vitamin C Micellar Cleansing Water, Concentrated Serum, and Revitalizing Moisturizer.

The micellar water and moisturizer contain probiotics and rooibos, a tea made from a South African plant that is full of antioxidants. The line also includes a night cream with probiotics and rooibos, but I did not try it.

The serum contains hyaluronic acid, which is super moisturizing: it can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water. All three products contain what the company claims is a very stable form of vitamin C that won’t evaporate or change it’s composition before absorbing into your skin.

My skin looks great. No more dull, washed out look or post-Florida sunspots for me!

You can pick up DermaE at Ulta.

Bath and Body: Le Petit Marseillais Shower Creme

I’m down to try anything French, especially French beauty products. The French know their stuff. So I couldn’t wait to try France’s popular Le Petit Marsellais line of body care, which recently launched in the U.S.*

According to parent company Johnson & Johnson, Le Marseillais started as a small hand-made soap company in Provence. One of the brand’s first products was olive oil soap sold in a few local pharmacies. The ingredients in Le Petit Marseillais are inspired by the South of France: lavender, orange blossom, and nectarine.

“The spirit of Le Petit Marseillais goes beyond ingredients,” Dawn Kidd, senior marketing director at Johnson & Johnson, Consumer Inc., said in a statement. “These products capture an entire way of life in the South of France: the sun-kissed countryside, vibrant colors, and simple pleasures of Provence.”

I am currently loving the Cotton Milk & Poppy extra-gentle shower creme. It smells like clean laundry, and leaves your skin feeling really soft. Apparently poppies bloom in the summer in the Mediterranean.

Le Petit Marseillais Cotton Milk and Poppy Shower Creme

My other fave? White Peach & Nectarine extra-gentle shower gel. I’ll be smelling yummy this summer!

Le Petit Marseillais White Peach and Nectarine Shpwer Gel

Le Petit Marseillais is available at stores like Walmart, Target, and CVS. As a matter of fact, according to the press materials, Walmart exclusively carries a line of 17 Le Petit Marseillais products, including hand soaps, body lotions, and a bar soap. The best part is that all these items are priced between $3.99 and $7.97. How wallet friendly is that?!

Tell me. Have any of your favorite foreign beauty products made their way stateside? You know me and K-beauty. And I’ll always come back to Nuxe body oil from France. Let’s talk imported beauty in the comments!
