Fabulous Links of the Week

Of course I took a beauty-related shot…

I went on a field trip to NYC with my photography class this morning. I was at the PATH before 8 am, people! Since it was a gorgeous day, the photo opportunities were amazing. But I came home beat. However, we have some Fabulous Links to get to, so…

A modeling agency reps only over-45-year-old models, a K-beauty section curated by Peach & Lily’s Alicia Yoon comes to CVS, and Bobbi Brown talks about how she pioneered “no-makeup makeup,” in this week’s Fabulous Links!

The Russian modeling agency Oldushka works just with models over 45. That’s awesome! Yes, beauty comes in all shapes, sizes, and skin tones, but it also comes at every age. With age comes wisdom and confidence. And there’s nothing sexier. (Yahoo! Beauty)

In the wake of the debut of K-beauty at Target, CVS is really upping it’s beauty game. Like Target, the pharmacy/convenience chain is working with Alicia Yoon of Peach & Lily fame to curate and feature a huge K-beauty section, debuting in April at CVS stores. More than 100 products are expected to arrive on shelves over the next year. Keep your eyes peeled. Definitely tweet me or comment about any products you try! (Allure)

Bobbi Brown, who made a career of no-makeup makeup and the beauty of inner confidence, sits down with Linda Wells of The Cut and chats about the evolution of her brand. (The Cut)

This week on the blog, I shared my favorite photos from the first part of the Everyday Eyecandy Project 52 photography challenge.

This year, I’m doing the Eyecandy Project 52 photography challenge. Every week, we have to take a picture inspired by a prompt, such as From Above. Some prompts are relevant to the time of year, some are more evergreen. I’m thinking I’ll post my more successful efforts here about once a quarter. Wish me luck!

OK, one more from today’s adventure in NYC.

These two pictures were from an event held this weekend called Beauty & Balance at Westfield World Trade Center.

p.s. I’ll tell you what. I’ll post the rest of my favorites from today a little later this week. xo C

Photography: Everyday Eyecandy Project 52

Remember how I said I was doing the Everyday Eyecandy Project 52 over on Instagram and Facebook? And that I’d post about my progress about once every quarter? Well, Q1 is in the books, my friends! So here are a few of my favorites.

The beginning is a great place to start. The prompt for week 1 was Me at the Beginning.

The prompt for week 6 was black and white. I love these old posts in front of the turn-of-the-century brownstones in Hoboken!

The beautiful rich colors in this photo…

…make it a good black and white photo.

The prompt for week 11 was portrait. I call this “tortitude.” I took this picture in the LHS cattery for my photography class final project.

“Bokeh” was the prompt for week 12. Bokeh is an Instagram word for limited depth of field. See how the tulip in the foreground is in focus, but the flowers in the background are fuzzy?

What can I tell you? Flowers make for great bokeh pictures…

Hope you enjoyed my favorites (so far). And can you believe it? Today was my final photography class! I’ll share some more picture stories I did for class over the next few weeks, including my final project about our local animal shelter.

Tell me. What do you like to photograph? Family? Animals? Landscapes? Let’s talk subject matter in the comments!

Fabulous Links of the Week

This week’s prompts in photography class were the titles of Bruce Springsteen songs. How could these trikes and bikes not be Thunder Road?!

Where’s spring? 😛 This weekend was cold and damp. While Mother Nature gets it together, let’s have some uplifting beauty news: Sephora is starting a class to help cancer survivors. And btw, how many of these bad-ass ladies over 60 are you following on Instagram? Check out this week’s Fabulous Links!

In the spirit of Look Good, Feel Better, Sephora is launching free in-store classes for women facing the devastating effects of cancer treatment (such as hair loss and dull, sallow skin). Sephora employees who are themselves living with cancer provided input for the curriculum. Look for the 90-minute classes starting April 9. Scroll down to the bottom of your screen to find classes near you. (Glamour)

If you know me, you know I am officially obsessed with Instagram. It’s my favorite social media platform. Apparently, these 12 ladies over 60 feel the same way. Some are famous, some you may not have heard of. How many of them are you following? (Total Beauty)

This week on the blog, I reviewed my custom lipstick mini from Finding Ferdinand and talked about taking fashion risks.

This pic was inspired by Born in the U.S.A. What is more American than Coca-Cola?

And of course, Born in the U.S.A. also meant a flag pic…

Dia & Co: Move Fashion Forward

Today’s post is all about taking risks: fashion risks, to be exact. I was inspired by Dia & Co., a personal styling service for plus-size women, to take part in an interesting challenge: taking a fashion risk. Since I am thinking about what I’d like to buy for spring and my upcoming Florida vacation, I well, took a risk, and said I’d do it.

For me, taking a fashion risk would involve wearing yellow. I don’t own anything in yellow. Not even something like a purse or scarf. So I did a little online research and found a few things I’d like to try on. (I’m not a fan of buying clothes online, unless I’ve already tried them on IRL.)

I like this cotton v-neck tee in Sunshine Yellow from Lacoste. I think it would be cute with khaki or white shorts and a bright lip.

I am also loving the denim South Ocean shorts in Lemon Drop by Lilly Pulitzer, which you can see here. Perfect with a white tee on a hot day!

Ashby, my contact Dia & Co., told me that every Friday, Dia staffers celebrate Try-Day Friday, and challenge themselves to step outside their comfort zones, style-wise. I love that twist on Casual Fridays!

Tell me. What does taking a fashion risk mean for you? Let’s think outside the box in the comments!

Product Review: Finding Ferdinand

I had a favorite uncle named Ferdinand. We called him Fred. He passed away 24 years ago, but I will always have a soft spot for those names. So after I saw this post about the makeup line Finding Ferdinand, I somehow found myself at FF headquarters in NYC

What makes Finding Ferdinand particularly cool is the app that allows you to create your own lipstick. I have been dying to create my own custom lipstick forever, and the team graciously gave me a demo.

After you download the app, you choose one of three lipstick finishes: matte, sheer, or creamy. Then you choose up to four pigments from a total of 16. The pigments range from mauve to bright orange to true red to taupe-y nude, so everyone will find something. You use the slider to determine the percentage of each pigment you want in your custom color.

After you design your color, you can save the “formula” in the app for future reorders. You can even name your color! Your product is shipped to you in about three business days.

I love how they emboss the logo on the bullet!

The look I was going for was a mauve-y pink, like the shade Jacqueline from Julie Hewett Los Angeles. I choose a creamy finish that is 60 percent Au Naturel (a beige taupe), 100 percent Pink Pizazz (a 60s-inspired bright pink), and 80 percent Creamy Mauve. I named my shade Pashmina, after my beautiful girl who passed away in August. (I wasn’t sure how Uncle Fred would feel about having a lipstick named after him.)

Pashmina: As beautiful as the lipstick she inspired.

A full-size custom lipstick is $30, but the sample-size custom is just $6! The mini size is perfect for your bag or travel. At just $6 a pop, you could even create a few different colors. And the creamy finish stands up to eating and drinking, and doesn’t dry out your lips.

How cute is this mini lipstick?!

Your lipstick comes in this envelope

Finding Ferdinand also has customizable eye shadow and blush/bronzer/highlighter palettes. You can pick from 60 eye shadows, 10 blushes, three bronzers, and two highlighters.

“We believe that beauty trends of the future will be created by the customer, so customization has always been a major part of the Finding Ferdinand DNA,” founder Nhu Le told Allure. “I really wanted each and every customer to be able to create something that they would love and love to use.”

The lipsticks and palettes comes with a sheet of stickers, so you can indulge your inner teen queen. I did.

It’s enough to make you want to decorate a Trapper Keeper!

According to a company spokeswoman, Le was inspired to name the brand Finding Ferdinand after learning the story of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella while studying abroad in Spain. The name is up to individual interpretation, however, and represents the search for and discovery of those things in life that make you feel like the best you.

Tell me. Have you ever created a custom lipstick color, or customized a makeup palette? It’s usually pretty pricey, so this is a one off for me, but it was such a treat!

Fabulous Links of the Week

Good Day Sunshine! (One of our photography prompts from class last week.)

Urban Decay had a big week: the edgy beauty brand announced a cool new collection and the launch of four lip kits. Meanwhile, the Pioneer Woman has a new home collection at Wal-Mart, in this week’s Fabulous Links!

Urban Decay is dropping a new collection inspired by the graffiti art of Jean-Michel Basquiat. Mark April 20 on your calendars! I am loving the pink-y lipstick and the cool cosmetics bags. (Allure) (The Cut)

UD is also launching lip kits! If you’ve been wanting to try a lip kit (usually a lip liner/liquid lipstick set), here’s a great option. The Urban Decay Ultimate Pair includes a UD Vice lipstick in a cream, sheer, or matte finish, and a coordinating lip liner. The Bad Blood and Ex-Girlfriend/Naked2 lip kits look pretty. (FYI, I have the Ex-Girlfriend lipstick and love it. A soft, pretty nude. I like to put it in the center of my lips, like a highlighter.)

The kits are a $37 value for $22! I hope they come up with more. Maybe in a pink or coral for summer. They are available at Ulta. (Allure)

Does anyone watch the Pioneer Woman? I admit, I don’t. But I saw a post about her new home collection for Wal-Mart and wanted to share. I am a fan of the color combinations and am thinking about doing more lifestyle stuff on here. Is that something you’d like to see? Let me know what you think! (POPSUGAR Living)

This week on the blog, I shared the pictures from my Essence of My Neighborhood photo essay. Our next four prompts are all Bruce Springsteen-themed.

Photography: The Essence of My Neighborhood

Remember when I mentioned my photography class had to do a photo essay called The Essence of My Neighborhood? Since yesterday was a snow day here in N.J., I thought I’d share it here. I added a few bonus pics, too. The things you’ll do when you’re stuck inside with nothing to binge watch…

I live across the street from the city hospital.

Our local bike sharing program is called Hudson Bike Share. These are at the entrance to the hospital.

The ambulance bay. It’s a hospital, people!

Catty corner to the hospital is Church Square Park.

Long view of the park’s band shell. Musicians come and play here in warmer weather. On the left you can see the park’s dog run.

Owners relax while their dogs run off leash. Go dogs go!

The dog run regulars break for refreshments.

The park has a playground, so kids have fun, too!

The park is called Church Square Park because it’s across the street from, wait for it, Our Lady of Grace Church.

The sweetest little old guy runs this hot dog cart at the entrance to the park. He wouldn’t let me take his picture, but no tour of my neighborhood is complete without a picture of the cart.

Well, that completes our tour. Ten pictures. And I have more: probably enough for another post or two! Can you believe we could only have seven photos in our slideshow?!

So tell me. What things define the essence of your neighborhood? Let’s talk hometowns  in the comments!

Fabulous Links of the Week

Up & Out Blow Out Bar near me always has the best signs!

Brrr…We’re bracing for an epic snowstorm here in NJ. But on to more important things. M.A.C. fans and Ulta shoppers celebrate, Hillary Clinton has a new look that has the Internet going crazy, and Birkenstock is dropping a skincare line, in this week’s Fabulous Links!

M.A.C. is coming to Ulta online and in stores in May and June. In time for all your wedding season needs! (WWD) And p.s. You can now get nyakio skincare at Ulta, too. I am still obsessed with nyakio Hydrating Face Oil with Kola Nut! (I don’t see it available anymore, but they have three other oils to try: a brightening oil with marula and neroli, a maracuja and yangu soothing oil, and a manketti and mafura anti-aging oil)

Hillary Clinton got new hair (with bangs!), and the World Wide Web approves! I like this look on Charlotte and Aden’s grandma! (Huffington Post)

You loved their sensible sandals, now try their…skincare?! Birkenstock, the German brand known for their hippy-ish, cork-soled sandals, announced this week it is dropping a skincare line. The products contain suberin, a substance in cork oak extract with anti-aging effects. Since the brand has been working with cork for about 240 years, maybe they know what they’re talking about. Look for Birkenstock Cosmetics this fall. (WWD)

This week on the blog, I reviewed Alastin Skincare. Once the snow gets going, I’ll post The Essence of My Neighborhood photo essay I did for photography class.

Product Review: Alastin Skincare

Alastin Restorative Skin Complex

In about a month, I am going to Florida for a (much needed) vacation. Which puts me in the market for a lighter skincare routine. I need products that won’t feel too heavy in the heat and humidity, but will keep fine lines and wrinkles at bay.

So I was happy to find a care package from Alastin on my doorstep.* The Restorative Skin Complex and the Restorative Eye Treatment feel light and absorb quickly into my skin. They won’t clog my pores or cause breakouts in the Florida weather or during the upcoming Hoboken/NYC summer.

Alastin contains TriHex Technology, a blend of three peptides that work together to reduce inflammation and promote the function of skin cells that produce collagen and elastin, Marina Peredo, a dermatologist in New York City, told me via e-mail.

“TriHex Technology helps rebuild the skin’s extracellular matrix (ECM) by clearing out the byproducts of aging that come from exposure to UV rays and pollution,” said Peredo. Eliminating fragmented, old collagen and elastin fibers allows for the production of fresh, new skin that is soft and supple.

You can buy Alastin Skincare online or at select providers near you.

My upcoming vacation has already got me thinking about summer skincare. Do you change up your routine in warmer weather? If so, how? (And you wear sunscreen all year round, right?!)

Fabulous Links of the Week

Pier C Park in Hoboken

Holy time warp, Batman! It’s March already! The weather has been crazy here in N.J. We’ve been trying to fit all four seasons into one week! One day it’s 70 degrees and sunny, the next day it’s freezing, the next day it’s rainy and 50 degrees…

But back to beauty. Urban Decay announced the launch of a skin care line and K-beauty e-tailer SokoGlam announced founder Charlotte Cho has curated a K-beauty discovery box, dubbed the Klog Box. This is good stuff, so let’s talk about it in this week’s Fabulous Links!

Urban Decay is coming out with a skin care line. Well, actually two skin care lines. No, that’s not a typo. The edgy makeup brand is launching Rehab Makeup Prep, a collection of six products to cleanse, revitalize, and moisturize your skin before you put your face on. UD is also dropping a three-piece line called Makeup Meltdown, designed to gently and thoroughly remove all traces of said face. No word from UD about when the products will be available, but I’m signed up for their emails, so I’ll be sure to tweet about the launch. (Allure)

SokoGlam just dropped a limited edition K-beauty discovery box curated by SokoGlam founder Charlotte Cho. The box contains six products, a mix of new launches and cult faves. And none of those annoying foil packets to see here: all products are full size! This $100+ value is available for $50! (Allure)

This week on the blog, I talked about Target’s plans to make its beauty section greener and safer, and I shared some pics I took for photography class, as we learn to use photos to tell stories.
