Self Control and Willpower

The prompt for this was Favorites. Guess which is my favorite Favorite?

As I mentioned on Sunday, I just did an article for The Doctor on self control and sticking with resolutions. The point of the article is it’s the time of year when people find it really hard to stick with the resolutions they made back in January.

But you can use little hacks to help you fight temptation. For example, if your resolution or goal is to get to the gym before work a few times a week, you can lay out your clothes the night before or set your alarm across the room so you have to get out of bed to turn it off.

I can’t say I’m a big believer in resolutions. Breaking down bigger goals into smaller, doable tasks works best for me. So when there was a lot of clutter in my apartment that I had to sort through, I went through it one room each day on a weekend. Or when I wanted to pick out new rugs and buy a new comforter cover, I made that my goal for the month.

My goals for March are to sign up for the co-working program Kettle Space and get the living room repainted. I have signed up for said Kettle Space, and I am starting my free trial. And I need to get going on the living room.

Another goal of mine for about the last year or so is to cut back on the amount of Diet Coke I drink. Now any one who knows me knows I drink a lot of the stuff. I don’t eat beef or pork, I walk a lot, and I do yoga three or four times a week. And I’ve never smoked. So Diet Coke is really my one vice.

But all that soda was making me belch-y and bloated. Gross. In an effort to cut back, I’ve been buying the 12-ounce cans one at a time from the bodega down the street. That way I limit the amount I drink, rather than mindlessly grabbing cans from a 12-pack in the fridge.

I started to work on drinking less soda even before I wrote another article for The Doctor about how diet soda increases heart disease and stroke risk in postmenopausal women. So far, so good. I’ve swapped in water and tea as my beverages of choice, and subsequently deflated like the Hindenburg.

So tell me. How are those New Year’s resolutions going? Do you believe in them? Let’s talk changes and what works for you in the comments!
