Photography: Timeless Asbury Park, N.J.

If you read my blog and/or follow me on Insta, you know I grew up on the Jersey Shore. Right near Asbury Park, actually. So when my photography teacher assigned us a 10-picture photo essay in black and white called Timeless [Your Choice], I picked the Asbury boardwalk. Those old buildings lend themselves very well to black and white photography. And Memorial Day was gorgeous: a bright, sunny day makes for amazing black and white photos. Enjoy!

This used to be a Howard Johnson’s when I was little. Remember HoJo’s clam strips?!

Convention Hall, with the Paramount Theater off to the side.

Aw, man. This makes me a little sad. This building used to have arcade games like Skee-Ball in it. I love a good game of Skee-Ball.

A front view of Convention Hall. Look at all that detail.

Yup, that Madam Marie’s. Immortalized in Bruce Springsteen’s song ‘Fourth of July, Asbury Park’.

Buying badges to enjoy the perfect beach day.

Last shot of Convention Hall, I promise. The lights across the top of the building say, you guessed it: Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J.

And I have more! I took almost 50 pictures that day. I’ll edit them and post them this week. I also have a post about some hair faves coming up, too!

I love the timeless, vintage feel of black and white photography. Do you like black and white photos as much as I do?

I’m Still Here!

Holy lame excuses, Batman! It’s actually been (more) than two months since I blogged. Two months! You can read that last post, about custom parfumier Scent Trunk, here.

What have I been up to? I am still writing for BestofNJ.com, for one. Check out my article on wedding flowers here, my piece on unusual wedding venues here, and my article on how to have fun on Valentine’s Day if you’re single here.

I also interviewed ‘Divorce Diva’ Vikki Ziegler for Best of NJ. That link is here. If you’ve got a minute, tune into Vikki’s Facebook Live posts every Wednesday at 2p Eastern US time. Vikki is a family law attorney, and a fellow Jersey girl. So you know she tells it like it is. We’re not afraid of a little tough love around here.

And for those who have followed my adventures in photography, I’ve started Photo 2, with the same instructor at the same studio. I love Craig and Beyond the Photograph! Here is my latest batch of photos. We were supposed to go around our neighborhood and document the changes and social conditions we saw. When I showed my photos to the class, they were in color. Craig said he’d really like to see them in black and white. Here you go!

The local supermarket.

Giovanni’s shoe repair is amazing! They can take any pair of shoes and make them like new!

This beautiful old church is across the street from me.

This old sign actually hangs above a dentist’s office. It is one of several old signs in Hoboken that were just never taken down.

Our regional electronics chain closed down. This was the Hoboken store.

It is going to be a Drybar.

I was trying to capture the contrast between old and new. I’ve lived in Hoboken almost 19 years (wow!), and I’ve seen a lot of smaller, mom and pop stores close since then. In their place, we’ve gotten stores like Anthropologie, GapKIds, and Athleta. And we are getting a Sephora (yay!) and the above-mentioned Drybar. I love it here, and God knows, I’m a Sephora girl, but the city is losing some of it’s gritty, turn-of-the century charm.

We’re about six weeks into 2018. Tell me. How has the new year been treating you so far? Let’s talk resolutions, stalled or otherwise, in the comments!

I Return with a Little Photography

Did you wonder if I was still alive?! My apologies for the radio silence. Shortly after my last post, I got the flu. Then I started a second freelance gig. I am the new weddings writer for BestofNJ.com! So between living on chicken soup and cough drops and looking at photography studio web sites, I’ve been pretty busy.

You can read my article on wedding gown trends here and my article on choosing a wedding photographer here. I’m currently writing two more wedding-related pieces for Best of NJ. I’ll share those links soon!

The other thing I’ve been doing is taking a black and white photography class. It’s pretty cool! You know I love anything vintage. Well, black and white photography has a serious vintage vibe. My photography teacher called it “the language our grandparents and great-grandparents spoke.” See below for some of my best efforts.

Well, I feel better and I’m back now. I’m planning a few fun things in the weeks ahead. I hope you had a great Thanksgiving! Tell me what you’ve been up to in the comments!

This year, I’m doing the Eyecandy Project 52 photography challenge. Every week, we have to take a picture inspired by a prompt, such as From Above. Some prompts are relevant to the time of year, some are more evergreen. I’ll post my more successful efforts here about once a quarter. Check out the Q1 highlights here, the best of Q2 here, and the Q3 highlights here.
