Skin Care: CBD

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably been hearing a lot about cannabidiol (CBD). It’s everywhere: I first mentioned CBD here, and it popped up again here.

Just to back up, CBD is one of about 100 or so cannabinoids, a group of compounds derived from the Cannabis sativa plant. No, CBD does not get you high. That’s another cannabinoid, called tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

CBD has definitely become the new ‘It’ ingredient in skin care. It has gained popularity because it has antiinflammatory and analgesic (pain relieving) properties. CBD also has antioxidants and vitamins A, D, and E, with some essential fatty acids thrown in for good measure.

So I reached out to Hampton Atkinson, co-director of the Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research at the University of San Diego in California. I asked him some questions about CBD as an ingredient in skin care products, and he was kind enough to respond and provide additional info about CBD as a therapy in general.

Atkinson said entrepreneurship “capitalizing on America’s love affair with the next big thing” may have led to the booming market in CBD-infused skin care. But because it has antiinflammatory properties, CBD may be useful in treating skin conditions such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis. “Inflammation is the root of all evil, including acne or the signs of aging,” New York City dermatologist Dendy Engelman told Allure. And it could give derms a nonsteroidal treatment option to offer their patients.

Since CBD reduces pain and swelling, it’s being added to balms and rubs used before or after tough workouts. CBD appeared to work in an animal model of knee inflammation, said Atkinson. He went on to say the researchers didn’t measure how much of the ‘dose’ of CBD that was applied actually got absorbed into the tissues.

Atkinson also said ongoing human studies of arthritis in the hands and knees used inhaled or oral formulations of CBD, rather than topically applied CBD. The most CBD gets absorbed into your system (ie., it has the greatest bioavailability) when it’s inhaled or taken sublingually (under the tongue).

And what was my experience when I test drove CBD oil and CDB body lotion, you ask? Pretty good, I’d say. I love the ShiKai CBD lotion pictured above. It feels light on the skin, so it’s nice for warmer weather when you don’t want anything too heavy. It kept my skin really moisturized, too. It was $45 at my local health food store, though.* But I would buy this again.

As far as the CBD oil goes? Meh. Let me explain. I have the creakiest knees. I climb stairs at the pace of someone twice my age. So I bought Fountain of Health CBD oil*, hoping it might help if I put some under my tongue. It helped a little, but it didn’t make that big a difference. And FYI, CBD oil tastes terrible, like you’re drinking a lawn. And I’m being polite.

The effectiveness of CBD-infused skin care products is still up in the air. The solid science just isn’t there yet. But if you want to try it, Allure has rounded up a list of 14 products to consider. Supposedly, Many Moore is a fan of the Lord Jones brand, and Olivia Wilde and Busy Philipps are fans of CBD stuff, too.

So tell me. Have you tried CBD oil or any beauty products with CBD in them? Share your thoughts and questions in the comments. I’d like to hear about your experience.

Fabulous Links: R.I.P. Luke Perry

Before Ryan Gosling and ‘Hey, girl’, Perry’s smoldering gaze made women melt.

Is there anything else to discuss this week but the untimely death of Luke Perry? I don’t watch Riverdale, but I have seen Beverly Hills, 90210. No one was effortlessly cooler than Perry’s Dylan McKay. The man made half-undone overalls look cool!

Dylan was a brooding loner, and the bad boy your mother warned you about. You hated yourself for loving him, but that’s what your teens and early 20s are for: hopeless crushes on mysterious men with an air of danger about them.

You wanted to save them from themselves, but your efforts were futile. The quest for redemption made them a bigger challenge, and more interesting, than the jocks and science nerds. Besides, what Mom never knew never hurt her.

By all accounts, Perry himself was a very nice guy, and a devoted family man. If you haven’t read the tribute to Perry by Entertainment Weekly‘s Kristen Baldwin, click here. It’s beautifully written.

Kristen is one of my favorite pop culture/TV journalists. And she humors me by occasionally liking my replies to her tweets.

Oh, I forgot. There is one thing that has happened in the beauty/wellness space we need to talk about. Remember how in the President’s Day Fabulous Links, I mentioned CBD oil is the new ‘it ingredient’ ? Now Martha Stewart has partnered with Canadian cannabis company Canopy Growth to advise them on the development of cannabis-based products. I’ve always thought Martha was a marketing genius, so it’s interesting she is getting into the cannabis space. (CNN Business) I don’t think the space is done growing, pardon the pun. And this week on the blog, I rocked my Purrberry/Burberry bracelet from Purfect Bracelets.

Fabulous Links President’s Day Weekend Edition

A nice lady used my phone to take this pic of me at the Taoray Wang show, in exchange for me taking one of her on her phone.

Hi everyone! I hope you are enjoying the long weekend. Some great beauty/fashion news has been posted lately, and we just wrapped up New York Fashion Week, so we have a lot to talk about.

Guys, remember Nudestix, which I thought was brilliant? Well apparently, Hilary Duff and Chelsea Handler agree! Company founder Jenny Frankel announced a few weeks ago that Duff and Handler are investing in the company! (WWD)

If you follow beauty news like me, you’ve probably heard that cannabidiol (CBD) oil is the new big ingredient in the beauty and wellness space. It’s everywhere. Recently Christopher Gavigan, co-founder with Jessica Alba of The Honest Company, announced he is launching a direct-to-consumer CBD business called Prima. (WWD) And exclusive retailer Barney’s New York is launching a ‘upscale cannabis concept shop’ called The High End in it’s Beverly Hills location. It has partnered with Beboe, sometimes called the ‘Hermes of cannabis’, on this project. Time will tell if there can really be an Hermes of marijuana. The High End opens next month. (Fashion Network)

Victoria Beckham is launching her own beauty brand by the end of the year. You can Spice up your makeup stash to make it more Posh. Puns aside, I can’t wait to see what VB comes up with. She has collaborated with Estee Lauder before, and she obviously knows beauty. It should be good stuff. (Allure)

My fave show from New York Fashion Week? Michael Kors and his ode to the fabulous 70s. I didn’t go, but my friend Jan was there. She has covered New York Fashion Week for more than 10 years, and called the clothes “languid, and so damn sexy!” I couldn’t have said it better myself. And the king of 70s pop, Barry Manilow, stopped by to end the show with his hit ‘Copacabana’. (Fashion Network)

And BTW, how great did 68-years-fabulous Pat Cleveland look at Neem Khan? Personally, I’m not a fan of glitter. It gets all over. To quote a designer on Project Runway, “glitter is the herpes of art supplies. It spreads.” But you go, Pat! Age shouldn’t stop you from wearing what you want. Even glitter. (Allure)

This week on the blog, I shared some pics of my adventures at New York Fashion Week.
