Fabulous Links of the Week

The sun reflecting off the Hudson on a cloudy day

It’s that special time: the second week of January, and the first full week after the holidays. How are those New Year’s resolutions going for ya? I know its been a pretty long week for me.

At least the beauty world was busy. A Korean sheet mask subscription service, Michelle O’s best beauty and fashion moments, a great essay by Bobbi Brown, beauty brands that will be big news in 2017, and an 80s revival, in this week’s Fabulous Links!

Sheet mask junkies will love FaceTory, a new beauty subscription service. For only $5 a month and $1 shipping, you get four sheet masks picked for you by the FaceTory team. You’re all set for #skincaresunday each month! (Allure)

As we prepare to say good bye to FLOTUS, the New York Times, Glamour, and Allure have curated roundups of her best beauty and fashion looks. No one made a statement with fashion, wore color, or mixed prints quite like Michelle. We’ll miss you, Mrs. O! (New York Times) (Glamour) (Allure)

Bobbi Brown wrote a moving open letter for Refinery29. She looked back on building her company, and reiterated her powerful message of using makeup to be your best you. Bobbi may be leaving her company, but she’s not going anywhere. (Refinery29)

Here are the beauty start-ups to watch this year, according to Fast Company. And yes, Memebox and Glossier made the list. (Fast Company)

If you remember mall bangs, AquaNet, and scrunchies, beware: 80s beauty is apparently poised to make a comeback in 2017. Gnarly! (Allure)

This week on the blog, I reviewed Babe Scrub coffee body scrub and SimySkin Nourishing Eye Cream.

This year, I’m doing the Eyecandy Project 52 photography challenge. Every week, we have to take a picture inspired by a prompt, such as From Above. Some prompts are relevant to the time of year, some are more evergreen. I’m thinking I’ll post my more successful efforts here about once a quarter. Wish me luck!

Skincare: Your Lips Need Love, Too!

It is 36 degrees in New Jersey, with winds gusting up to 24 miles per hour. In April! These numbers aren’t typos. The weather is craazzyy!

Between the wacky weather and breathing through my mouth thanks to this unending head cold, my lips have really taken a hit. So I asked Meredith Brown, a licensed esthetician at Russak Dermatology in New York City, what I could do.

“Lips are usually something people don’t think about until its too late, and they are chapped and dried out,” Brown told me. You need a lip balm to keep your lips hydrated.

Brown said the best lip balms are free of synthetic products and fragrances. “You want something that has petroleum in it,” said Brown. Petroleum is occlusive, so it creates a healing environment against wind and dryness, but it also allows oxygen flow so your lips can breathe.

Brown likes Aquaphor because it is very clean, and it has petroleum. Aquaphor has been around forever for a reason. It’s good stuff.

“You want to be diligent about applying moisturizer to your lips,” said Brown. Basically, you want to apply an Aquaphor-like product three to six times per day.

And, no, your lips are not excused from SPF. Brown recommends Chapstick with SPF, and reapplying it every 90 minutes or so if you are out in the sun. You can apply it under lipstick or gloss if you are wearing lip color.

And to get the most out of your lip balm, you can easily make a DIY lip exfoliant out of coconut oil and sugar. The skin on your lips is similar to the skin on your face, said Brown. Moisturizers can’t penetrate excess dry skin. If you exfoliate and remove the dry skin, your lips can absorb the product and reap its moisturizing benefits.

Above, I’ve included a pic of my fave lip saviors: Chapstick SPF 12, Fresh Sugar Lip Polish, Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment SPF 15, Bliss Fabulips lip balm, Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask, Glossier Coconut balmdotcom, and CocoMe Lipelixir.

Here’s a piece I did a while ago for BeautyNews NYC about lip balms.

How do you protect your lips from the elements? Let me know in the comments!

Product Review: Glossier Mega Greens Galaxy Pack and Moisturizing Moon Mask

Glossier Mask Pods and Headband

Glossier Mask Pods and Headband

I tried my Mega Greens Galaxy Pack and Moisturizing Moon Mask this weekend.* It was rainy and damp in New Jersey on Sunday, and very cold and windy yesterday, so the timing was right for a spa day.

The Mega Greens Galaxy Pack has a consistency like thick paste. And it has a clean, earthy scent. I thought it went on pretty sheer. for a facial mask. You wash your face, apply the mask, and then wait for 20 minutes before you wash it off. My skin felt clean, soft, and totally “detox-ed.”

The Moisturizing Moon Mask looks like hand or body lotion in the pod, and feels like it on your skin. According to the information that came with the gift set, you can use it after the Mega Greens Galaxy Pack, but I used it yesterday after a windy, cold walk along the Hoboken waterfront. The Moisturizing Moon Mask really soothed my skin after that experience! You also apply the Moon Mask to a clean face and leave it on for 20 minutes, then wash it off.

Just FYI, each pod contains more than one mask application. I’ve put the remains of the pods in the fridge for next time.

You can buy Glossier masks online. I don’t think they have the mask duo gift set any more though. 🙁

Glossier Mask Duo Set

Glossier Mask Duo Set

I mentioned the Charlotte Tilbury mini lipstick charms for I got Christmas, and how much I love them. Well, I got the Glossier Mask Duo and a Bobbi Brown Sequin Eye Shadow, too! (My family knows me too well!)

The mask set gives you six pods each of two Glossier cult faves: the Moisturizing Moon Mask and the Mega Greens Galaxy Pack purifying and detoxifying mask. You also get a super cute plush headband to wear while you pamper yourself. I plan to try them this weekend and post a review next week.

The Sequin Eye Shadow goes on pretty sheer, but the color is quite buildable. It’s also veerry sparkly, making it perfect for your date night, smoky eye needs! I’m trying to ramp things up on match.com in the new year, so I hope it will be put to good use!

Holiday 2015 Gift Guide

I was trolling the Web for holiday gift guide ideas this weekend. (OK, so the gift ideas were actually for me, and I was wasting time after yoga until the Jets-Giants game started. But at least I’m honest.) I found some great things that the beauty junkie in your life would appreciate.

Almost everything is less than $100! (The one-year Birchbox and Birchbox Man subscriptions are $110.) Many items are less than $75. I tried to include things at different price points.

Makeup

How adorable are these Charlotte Tilbury Mini-Lipstick Charms?

And these M.A.C. “Irresistibly Charming” mini lip gloss sets come in nude, pink, and violet.

If you’ve got a rock chick on your list, she’ll love the UD x Gwen eye shadow palette from Urban Decay.

The bareMinerals blush and eye shadow wardrobe has everything she’ll need, in colors that flatter everyone.

Nails

Empire fans will love this nail polish set from Deborah Lippmann, with colors inspired by the Cookie Monster herself.

And how gorgeous is the Deborah Lippmann Roses In the Snow Nail Color Duo?

Or maybe she’s a fashionista. She’ll love this Allure for butter LONDON Nail Lacquer Set.

I love the colors in the butter LONDON RSVP Set. They’re perfect all year round, actually.

For the girl who likes to change up her polish color, how about butter LONDON’s Twelve Months of Manis set?

Skin

The masks in this Glossier Mask Duo are supposed to be amazing.

I love the Wonderglow Instant Soft-Focus Beauty Flash Primer in Charlotte Tilbury‘s The Gift of Goddess Skin Travel Set. And I have heard good things about the Goddess Skin Clay Mask and Charlotte’s Magic Cream.

For a few more dollars, you could get Charlotte’s The Gift of Red Carpet Skin Travel Set, which has the mask, primer, and Magic Cream, and also includes Multi-Miracle Glow, Supermodel Body body contouring cream, and Take It All Off makeup remover.

Makeup Brushes

If it’s makeup brushes she needs, how great are these “Enchanted Eve” travel-size brushes from M.A.C.?

Hair

The Living Proof “Happy Hair Days” Collection includes the Perfect Hair Day dry shampoo I love. A “No Frizz” Discovery Set and a “Restore” Discovery Set are also available.

Every beauty editor will tell you how great Moroccanoil Treatment smells. So any woman will love the Hydrating Travel Kit or Volume Travel Kit. Each kit includes a shampoo, conditioner, hair mask, and either Moroccanoil Treatment or Treatment Light.

Can’t decide? A gift subscription to Birchbox will let her discover new favorites.

For Him

The guys on your list might like this Kiehl’s Manmade Essentials Starter Set.

A gift subscription to Birchbox Man keeps him thinking of you after the holidays are over.

Here are links to the complete gift guides from Nordstrom, Sephora, and Ulta. The options are endless.

I mentioned trying to include budget-friendly ideas, but if you are the type who goes big or goes home, here’s Rachel Zoe’s luxury beauty gift guide. That UD eye shadow vault? Drool.

What are you hoping for this holiday season? Happy Holidays! xoxo

Glossier Summer Fridays!

Glossier

Friday was gorgeous in New York City: bright, sunny, and not very humid. So I decided to check out the Glossier penthouse showroom. Glossier is the skin care line from Into the Gloss, one of my favorite beauty blogs.

The company is opening its showroom doors for summer Fridays through September 11 so fans can try its products: the Soothing Face Mist, Priming Moisturizer, Perfecting Skin Tint, and the Balm Dotcom. You can also try the Moisturizing Moon Mask and the Mega Greens Galaxy Pack, a detoxifying face mask. Check out the gorgeous showroom, located in Manhattan’s SoHo neighborhood, on the border of Chinatown.

I tried the Mega Greens Galaxy Pack. I relaxed on the beautiful patio while it rid my skin of toxins. When I wiped the mask off, my skin was as soft as a baby’s behind.

Glossier products are available for purchase on site. I wanted to go nuts and get the Balm Dotcom, Priming Moisturizer, and Perfecting Skin Tint, but I restrained myself. I only bought the Coconut Balm Dotcom, a coconut-scented version of the Balm Dotcom.* It smells like Tahiti in a tube. I’m using it as an eye cream at night.

Have you tried any Glossier products? If so, let me know your thoughts in the comments. If you haven’t, they are available online. And if you aren’t getting the ITG newsletter, what are you waiting for? It’s free!
