Outdoor Christmas lights look pretty in black and white!

Outdoor Christmas lights look pretty in black and white!

It’s almost Christmas! Things have been a little busy in the beauty world, at least here in NYC: Ulta announced it is opening its first ever Manhattan location, and L’Occitane announced the opening of its new flagship in the Flatiron District. And Marcia Kilgore does it again with Beauty Pie, a buyers’ club catering to beauty junkies, while Unilever bought out Jennifer Aniston and the other owners of Living Proof. Here are this week’s Fabulous Links!

Ulta is coming to Manhattan’s tres chic Upper East Side next fall! (WWD)

L’Occitane’s new flagship store features a Smart Beauty Fitting Room, where you can browse and sample products suggested by a digital platform. Very hi-tech! (FashionNetwork.com)

Beauty Pie is the latest brain child of Marcia Gilgore, who brought you Bliss and Soap & Glory. it’s like a Costco for beauty and skincare. For a monthly membership fee, you can buy high-quality cosmetics at no-mark-up factory prices. It’s no-mark-up makeup! (Popsugar)

Unilever, parent company to brands such as Dove, Caress, and Pond’s, bought out Jennifer Aniston and her team at Living Proof. I’m curious about where the consumer products giant will take the brand. (WWD)

This week on the blog, I pulled together a gift guide for the guys on your list. And still looking for gift ideas? My gift guide for her and stocking stuffer guide are here to help!

This month, I’m taking the 25 Days of Christmas Photo a Day Challenge on Instagram, courtesy of blogger and shutterbug extraordinaire LaShawn Wiltz of Everyday Eyecandy. I’ll be posting pics daily inspired by Christmas- and holiday-themed prompts, using the hashtag #eyecandyholidaychallenge.

2016 Holiday Gift Guide: For Her

I loved putting together my holiday gift guide and vegan beauty gift guide last year. I had a blast putting this year’s guide together, too! As always, I tried to include things in a range of price points. Who knows? You may even get some ideas about what you want from Santa…

Makeup

I love Bobbi Brown. Her colors are gorgeous and her products go on like a dream and last and last. This ‘Bobbi’s Beauty Book’ palette with six eye shadows, blush, bronzer, and lip gloss takes girls-on-the-go from day to night.

Remember last year, when I got the K.I.S.S..I.N.G. mini lipstick charms from Charlotte TIlbury? This year, Charlotte came out with lipstick charms in her Matte Revolution formula. It includes Red Carpet Red, a classic Holiywood red, Amazing Grace, a pretty pink inspired by Grace Kelly, and Very Victoria, a nod to Victoria Beckham’s signature taupe nude lip.

Urban Decay dropped the mic when they came out with their Naked Ultimate Basics eye shadow palette this fall. The looks the UD’er on your list could create with this are endless.

Makeup Brushes

I think makeup brushes are almost more important than the makeup itself. I mean, makeup washes off with soap and water, right? If you use a good primer and good tools, your makeup will always look amazing.

Check out this basic brush set from Bobbi Brown. Its pretty much everything the makeup maven on your list will need, and they will last her a lifetime. I love my Bobbi Brown blush and eye shadow brushes, and I’ve had them for years.

I get it. Not every one wants to drop $200 on a set of makeup brushes. How about the Sephora Collection Face the Day Full Face Brush Set? Its got a powder brush, foundation brush, large shadow brush, large brow brush, and smudge brush in a trifold case. BTW, I am also loving this ‘Tools of the Trade’ brush set from Sephora.

Nails

I’m obsessed with the Netflix series The Crown. The girl who also binge-watched the adventures of young Queen Elizabeth 2 and her party-hearty kid sister, Margaret, may love the royalty-inspired ‘Her Majesty’s Nail Color Set’ from Deborah Lippmann.

This EVENTful Nail Lacquer set from butterLODON is another cute option.

Hair

If your niece/daughter/grandaughter is a regular at her local blow out bar, she may be into the Let It Blow! Drybar to Go Ultimate Travel Essentials Kit. You get a travel hair dryer, travel hair brush, dry shampoo, dry conditioner, and hair clips, all in a cute travel pouch.

Another option? The Spread Cheer and Perfect Hair set from Living Proof. You know I love Living Proof . And their dry shampoo won an Allure Best of Beauty award.

Fragrance

You know me and scent. It’s complicated. But if you have a fragrance lover in your life, she may like this Jo Malone London cologne collection. She’ll get five of Jo Malone’s signature scents, and she can mix and match. Bonus: it comes in a pretty gift box. (I suck at gift wrapping and hate it.)

Or if your giftee is like my grandmother who loves scented candles, how about this gorgeous votive candle set from celeb-fave brand diptyque?

If all else fails, Sephora, Nordstrom, and Ulta have tons of great ideas for the beauty buffs on your list. And if you need stocking stuffers, I’ve got you.

I am looking to get more into photography in 2017, so I have asked for a camera and photography lessons for the holidays. What are you hoping to find under the tree?

Fabulous Links of the Week

I went to the Met yesterday with my friend Laurie to see the Manus x Machina exhibit at the Costume Institute. I loved it!

The next big trend in the beauty industry, Brexit’s impact on cult U.K. brands, Jennifer Aniston speaks out on celeb body shaming and her frustration with the paparazzi’s bump watch, and the Instagram every SATC fan and fashionista needs to follow, in this week’s Fabulous Links!

Sun care is a rapidly growing trend in beauty retail. I agree: an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. I am loving the brand Supergoop! (PYMNTS)

Allure looks at the effect of Brexit on go-to British brands like Charlotte Tilbury, Boots No. 7, and Nails, Inc. Luckily, we don’t have too much to worry about! (Allure)

Jennifer Aniston isn’t having a baby. She has had enough, though. (Huffington Post)

The Instagram @everyoutfitonsatc, by Lauren Garroni and Chelsea Fairless, is an SATC fan’s dream. Relive the Fab Four’s best fashion moments. (And some cringe-worthy ones, too!) The captions are almost better than the clothes. (Glamour)

Hair: 2015 Favorites

So far, I’ve shared my favorite discoveries this year in skincare, makeup, and bath and body. I thought I’d finish my retrospective at the top: with my favorite hair products of 2015. (See what I did there?)

Shampoo/Conditioner

Alterna Caviar Anti-Aging Brightening Blonde Shampoo and Conditioner are not only the best shampoo and conditioner I’ve tried this year, they are the best shampoo and conditioner I’ve tried period. These products keep my hair soft and shiny, and they brighten and protect my highlights. BTW, Alterna’s Caviar CC Cream is pretty good, too! Kudos to Katie Holmes and the gang at Alterna!

Dry Shampoo

Since every beauty editor and blogger I know of raves about Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo, I picked up a sample size bottle while browsing Sephora with Mama Bear. Now I get what the fuss is all about! Jennifer Aniston and Friends really outdid themselves. (Sorry. I had to.)

Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo gets my hair clean without weighing it down with residue and making it a greasy mess. Plus, it smells amazing.

I’m also loving Kardashian Beauty Take 2 Dry Shampoo. That’s right. I used the “K” word. Say what you will about them, those ladies know their beauty products. The editors at Allure disguised Kardashian Beauty hair products, then gave them to celebrity hair stylist Frankie Foye to use on her clients. You can read about her feedback here.

That Allure blog post made me want to try something by Kourt, Kim, and Khloe. Take 2 definitely gives your roots lift and texture, and sops up any oil. It does leave a bit of residue, but nothing too terrible. Just don’t use too much. I switch between Take 2, Perfect Hair Day, and my beloved Klorane for all my dry shampoo needs.

Styling Products

If I had to choose my luxury item for Survivor, I would grab my bottle of Bumble and Bumble Curl Conscious Defining Creme. I have fine hair with a natural wave to it, and this stuff keeps my curls soft and bouncy. Definitely the best of all the curl defining products I’ve tried in 2015.

Bumble and Bumble introduced Surf Infusion Spray, an oil-infused sibling to its iconic Surf Spray, early last year. And it lived up to all the hype. Sexy Victoria’s Secret beach waves with none of the crunch!

Did you you find any favorite new hair products this year? Tell me about them in the comments!

Neotensil

I mentioned in a previous post that I was in Las Vegas for the Aesthetic Show, a trade show for medi spas, derms, and plastic surgeons.

At The Aesthetic Show in Las Vegas.

While I was there, I saw a cool 3D flyer about Neotensil, a new solution for under eye bags. The name Neotensil is an acronym for (Neo) new, (T) transforming, (E) elastic, (N) non-invasive, (S) supportive, (I) invisible and immediate (L) layer. The product is sold as a kit containing a 7-week supply (recommended price about $500).

Living Proof's Neotensil

Living Proof’s Neotensil

Neotensil is only available through doctor’s offices. A spokeswoman for the company told me via e-mail it is important that patients are diagnosed with “eye bags,” and not just under eye puffiness, so they get the most benefits from using the product. After an initial diagnosis, people can just go back to doctor and replenish their kit, and don’t necessarily need an appointment.

The science behind Neotensil is pretty interesting. Using a trademarked technology called Strateris, the two-step application process forms a breathable film that acts as what the company calls “invisible shapewear” to reduce the appearance of under eye bags.

You prep your skin with special pads before applying Neotensil, and then use a tool to apply the Reshaping Base followed by the Activating Layer. You use a special remover and pads to remove the invisible film. According to the company, the product can be worn for up to 16 hours, and provides hydration for up to 24 hours. An article in Plastic Surgery Practice, posted to the Neotensil web site, says the effects are visible within 1 to 3 hours,  but are not permanent, although some improvement may be cumulative.

Incidentally, Neotensil was developed by scientists at Living Proof, the hair care company co-owned by America’s good Friend, the 45-and-fabulous Jennifer Aniston.
