Photography: Liberty Humane Society Picture Story

For some weekend fun, I wanted to share my final project for photography class. We had to tell a picture story. I chose to do my project on Liberty Humane Society in Jersey City, NJ. Animal welfare is a cause close to my heart, and I have had rescue cats since I was in second grade.

I used to volunteer at LHS, but stopped going because it made me so sad to see all those animals in need of good homes. LHS is not the cheeriest place, but the staff and volunteers do everything possible on behalf of the animals.

It took a long time, and it was hard for me to share this. I don’t know why. The pics are OK, although my photography has evolved since March, when these were taken. And I have since been introduced to Adobe Lightroom digital photography software. (Lightroom, BTW, is the greatest invention since lip liner.)

Maybe I was reluctant to post this because I adopted two female cats, Mesa and Pashmina, from LHS, and I am still grieving Pashmina’s death last August. Or maybe it’s that I feel strongly about rescue, and wanted to do the story justice.

But anyway, here it is. I had so much fun putting it together. Enjoy!

LHS is located in Liberty State Park in Jersey City, NJ.

LHS exists in what was once a municipal garage.

A closeup of the mural on the building.

Volunteers are so important. A walk in the sun can make a shelter dog’s day.

The cattery is up a flight of stairs in what must have been the garage office.

Appropriate tortitude!

The kennel in located in the former garage motor pool.

Seriously?! Are you going to say no to that face?

Many animals = tons of laundry

Adoptions = Happy Tails

This year, I’m doing the Eyecandy Project 52 photography challenge. Every week, we have to take a picture inspired by a prompt, such as From Above. Some prompts are relevant to the time of year, some are more evergreen. I’ll post my more successful efforts here about once a quarter. Check out the Q1 highlights here.

Photography: Everyday Eyecandy Project 52

Remember how I said I was doing the Everyday Eyecandy Project 52 over on Instagram and Facebook? And that I’d post about my progress about once every quarter? Well, Q1 is in the books, my friends! So here are a few of my favorites.

The beginning is a great place to start. The prompt for week 1 was Me at the Beginning.

The prompt for week 6 was black and white. I love these old posts in front of the turn-of-the-century brownstones in Hoboken!

The beautiful rich colors in this photo…

…make it a good black and white photo.

The prompt for week 11 was portrait. I call this “tortitude.” I took this picture in the LHS cattery for my photography class final project.

“Bokeh” was the prompt for week 12. Bokeh is an Instagram word for limited depth of field. See how the tulip in the foreground is in focus, but the flowers in the background are fuzzy?

What can I tell you? Flowers make for great bokeh pictures…

Hope you enjoyed my favorites (so far). And can you believe it? Today was my final photography class! I’ll share some more picture stories I did for class over the next few weeks, including my final project about our local animal shelter.

Tell me. What do you like to photograph? Family? Animals? Landscapes? Let’s talk subject matter in the comments!

Photography: Storytelling

In photography class, we are starting to talk about storytelling: using photographs to tell, wait for it, a story! (Think: the photo essays in Life magazine back in the day.) Last week, the teacher gave us several prompts, and we had to take pictures inspired by these prompts. Kind of like the Everyday Eyecandy challenges I’ve mentioned. So, for weekend fun, I wanted to share my photos with you.

I Can See for Miles and Miles

What I love about this picture is you can see the shadow of the railing on the girl’s jeans. I would love to try this prompt on the beach on the Jersey Shore.

This was shot on Pier C in Hoboken with my Sony a6000 f/16; SS 1/80; ISO 100

Betcha Can’t Eat Just One!

This prompt was my favorite. It gave me an excuse to buy vanilla cupcake M&Ms at Target. You need these in your life, my friends.

Ch-ch-ch-changes

The exterior of Liberty Humane Society, our local animal shelter. I lost my sweet girl, Pashmina, to a brain tumor in August. Nightmare. I am thinking of adopting again this spring, to honor her life. I also want her companion, Mesa, to have a new buddy. Change is a good thing!

R.I.P. Pashmina. Wasn’t she beautiful?

For next week, we have to create a 7-photo essay called The Essence of My Neighborhood. I already have a few ideas! This should be interesting… (Don’t worry. I’ll post my pics!)

Tell me. What photos would you take inspired by the above prompts? Don’t be shy. Share in the comments!
