Fabulous Links of the Week: Fourth of July Edition

Happy Fourth of July!

Happy Fourth! Hope you are having a great holiday weekend! In beauty news, Kat von D announced she is coming out with a Lolita-inspired version of her popular Shade + Light eyeshadow palette, a study in the Annals of Internal Medicine reports an increase in complaints about beauty product side effects, and Lure Hsu has the Internet talking about how she looks half her age.

Kat von D’s most popular lipstick shade is called Lolita, a looks-good-on-everybody rosy taupe. She even came out with a combination eye shadow and blush in Lolita. Now she is developing a Lolita-inspired version of her bestselling Shade + Light Eye Contour palette. I can’t wait to see it! I wonder how it will compare to Urban Decay’s rose gold Naked 3 palette… (Allure)

As a journalist, I cover medicine and health, so this story was of particular interest to me. According to a new study, people are increasingly reporting adverse events related to beauty products to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The biggest culprits were hair care, skin care, and tattoos. The authors concluded that the FDA should have more jurisdiction over the beauty industry. Currently, the agency only requires a few products, such as acne treatments and sunscreen, to receive pre-market approval. Otherwise, beauty is basically a self regulated industry. (JAMA Internal Medicine) (Racked)

Taiwanese interior designer Lure Hsu is 41 years old, people. That is not a typo. 4-1. She doesn’t look a day over 22. And the Internet can’t stop talking. To quote When Harry Met Sally, “I’ll have what she’s having.” (Allure)

This year, I’m doing the Eyecandy Project 52 photography challenge. Every week, we have to take a picture inspired by a prompt, such as From Above. Some prompts are relevant to the time of year, some are more evergreen. I’ll post my more successful efforts here about once a quarter. Check out the Q1 highlights here.

This week on the blog, I shared some pics I took in the skyline photography workshop and talked to two amazing dentists about keeping your teeth white this summer.

Makeup: Beauty So Clean

Some goodies from Beauty So Clean

At The Makeup Show last month, I found myself sitting with Nancy Crossley, founder of Beauty So Clean, a line of makeup and makeup brush sanitizing products. While we hung out at brunch, Nancy and her daughter told me the story behind Beauty So Clean.

Nancy is a makeup artist who (naturally) wanted the makeup and brushes in her kit to be sanitary for her clients. Unfortunately, the only way to really sanitize the stuff was with alcohol, which could really dry out the makeup and brushes.

So Nancy consulted with her fellow makeup artists and others in the makeup industry, and Beauty So Clean was born. The product range includes makeup sanitizing wipes and sprays, brush cleaners, and even a false eye lash cleaner.

I need to go through my makeup stash, and weed out all the old stuff that isn’t working for me anymore. Nancy was kind enough to gift me a bag of Beauty So Clean products when I stopped by her booth at the show, so I will be using those on what I keep.*

You know, those lipsticks I love, but only wear in the summer. Blushes I haven’t worn in a while, but are flattering on my skin tone, so I want to add them back into the rotation. That kind of thing.

The Beauty So Clean products will be great for my mascara and eyeliner, too. I have GPC, or global papillary conjunctivitis. I am hyperallergic to the bacteria that builds up on eyeliner, mascara, and contact lenses. I have to be diligent about replacing my mascara every three months, and I wear disposable contact lenses.

Beauty So Clean will be a big help with keeping my eye makeup clean, so I don’t get pink eye. Cool!

Tell me. How do you sanitize your makeup? Do you sanitize your makeup? It never really occurred to me to do so, because I am not a makeup artist, so I am the only one using my makeup. But after talking with Nancy, I need to rethink that. Let’s talk cleanliness in the comments!

Fabulous Links of the Week

Enjoying a summer night in NYC at a rooftop bar with my friend Laurie.

Happy Monday! Dang, this weekend was a hot one here in NJ and NYC! Lately, beauty news has been pretty hot, too. Urban Decay announced the launch of its new Urban Decay Naked Heat eye shadow palette, JLo posted a makeup-free selfie, and Salma Hayek is launching a line of smoothies and acai bowls, some of which can be used as a face mask.

Urban Decay is welcoming a new member to the Naked family. Get ready for the Urban Decay Naked Heat palette. The palette features terra cottas, coppers, and oranges. If you like your eye shadows in warmer tones, brace yourself. (Cooler tones look better on me. Boo.) The palette drops on June 30. (Allure)

Jennifer Lopez posted a makeup-free selfie from backstage in Las Vegas. How is this woman freaking 48 years old?!? (Glamour)

Salma Hayek collaborated with Juice Generation on Blend It Yourself, a line of smoothies and acai bowls delivered to your door all prepped and ready for you to well, blend it yourself! The line includes three Beauty Blends that can either be drunk as a smoothie or applied to your face as a skin care mask. Sip or slather. Yum! (WWD)

This week on the blog, I shared my Sephora birthday haul and my picture story about our local animal shelter. Also, I did a story for The Doctor Will See You Now about sunscreen. You are remembering to apply sunscreen, aren’t you?!

Fabulous Links of the Week

I was in a reflective mood…

It was my birthday week. I’m another year wiser! (I hope.) While I was turning the page on another year, Mariah Carey announced her beauty line is definitely happening and Selma Blair shut down the shamers of her gray roots.

Apparently, Mariah Carey and her manager Stella Bulochnikov are starting a beauty line, complete with it’s own brick-and-mortar store in Beverly Hills. Hopefully, it will launch in time for the holidays when “All I Want for Christmas Is You” is on repeat. Mariah’s collaboration with M.A.C. was such a success, I can’t wait to check it out. (New York Post) (Allure)

Selma Blair? #grayhairdontcare! Blair took to Instagram to clap back in the best way at those daring to throw shade at her peek-a-boo roots. What’s a little gray among friends? (Allure)

This week on the blog, I reviewed DermaE’s Vitamin C Skincare Collection.

Fabulous Links of the Week: Mother’s Day 2017

Dinner with my family – Mother’s Day 2017

I hope all you mommas had a great Mother’s Day. I did! My family and I had a nice dinner together to celebrate. (See pic above.) Maybe you can talk celeb makeup artist Val Garland into doing your mom’s makeup. She just got the gig as global makeup director at L’Oreal Paris. (WWD) Be sure to check out the photo gallery. Ms. Garland has come up with some cool, vintage-inspired looks! And some avant-garde ones, too. It will be interesting to see what Garland and L’Oreal create together.

This whole Mother’s Day thing has me thinking: What beauty secrets did you learn from your mom? I don’t know about beauty secrets, per se, but my mom instilled in me a love for blush, soft pink lipstick, and blue eyeliner. Very traditional colors. To this day, I still reach for pinks, nudes, and taupes, and I have eyeliner pencils in every shade of blue. And I own more blush than I could wear in ten lifetimes.

The nuns at my elementary school would yell at me for wearing blush. I didn’t care. But I didn’t experiment with eye shadow until I was north of 35. Go figure.

So what did you learn about makeup/beauty from you mom/grandmother/aunt? Let’s spill family beauty secrets in the comments!

Have a great week! xo

Makeup: Blushington UES

Its been a cray week. On Monday, I went to a launch event for a new laser used for skin resurfacing. And on Wednesday I had two back-to-back holiday parties in the city.

In the middle of all this, I did revisions for a piece for a new client and wrote a story for a regular client, The Doctor Will See You Now. By Friday, I needed a serious break.

So this morning, I treated myself to a complimentary makeup application at the new Blushington location in New York City on the Upper East Side. I chose the Everyday Pure & Simple look. Here’s the finished result:

My finished look!

My finished look!

My makeup artist Neah used three products that I particularly loved: Jouer Essential Lip Enhancer lip primer; Julie Hewett Los Angeles lipstick in ‘Jacqueline’, a pink fuchsia; and the Stila Eyes Are the Window eye shadow palette in ‘Mind’, which is similar to Urban Decay’s new Naked Ultimate Basics palette. The whole look was very soft and pretty!

The lip enhancer helped my lipstick last and kept my lips moisturized, even while walking around freezing, windy Manhattan. And I love the ‘Jacqueline’ lipstick, inspired by Mrs. Kennedy herself. I think it would be especially nice in the summer with a tan.

Blushington sells the products they use. It took major self control to get out of there without buying anything! You can learn more about Blushington here.

I rarely get my makeup done by a pro, except for a real treat. (The full makeup service, normally $65, was free to celebrate the opening of the new location! I love free!) Do you get your makeup done often? If so, have you picked up any tips or tricks along the way that you incorporated into your regular routine? Let’s talk makeup hacks in the comments!

I love the look of maroon bows!

I love the look of maroon bows!

It sure is looking Christmas-y around here! See below for some pretty wreath-inspired manis for holiday parties! And check out this young makeup artist’s epic holiday eye makeup. Also, a wine-inspired hair care line and an all-girl garage where you can get a mani/pedi while your car gets serviced, in this week’s Fabulous Links!

I love a cute Christmas manicure! I may want to rock one of these looks for the holiday events I have coming up this week. (Yahoo! Style)

How gorgeous is this snow globe eye makeup from makeup artist Ali Nordahl? She’s just 17 years old and self taught! You can see some of her other creations here. (Allure)

The hair care line Vine de la Vie contains polyphenols, the good-for-you compounds in red wine. The company says polyphenols can slow down hair’s aging process. Anything based on wine is OK by me! (Allure)

The lovely lady mechanics (shecanics) at Girls Auto Clinic Repair Center in Upper Darby, Penn., will fix your ride while you get pampered at the So Clutch Beauty Bar. I think this business model is brilliant! Why not kill two birds with one stone? (Plus, I hate the turbo-volume daytime TV they play at the place I get my car serviced.) (CBS Philadelphia)

This week on the blog, I got the scoop on SocialVend, found some cool stocking stuffers for the beauty lovers on your list, and shared my fave pics from my #naphopomo challenge on Instagram.

Fabulous Links of the Week: Thanksgiving Weekend Edition

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Gobble, gobble! Hope everyone had a great holiday weekend! While we were basting turkeys and baking pies, Estee Lauder bought Too Faced Cosmetics. Elsewhere in the beauty world, getting the most out of your 50s, a bad-ass hair salon, and a new makeup brand to check out, in this week’s Fabulous Links!

For all you Too Faced fans out there, the cult fave brand is now part of the Estee Lauder family. I can’t wait for the Natural Love palette to come out! (WWD)

They call your 50s your #boss years. All the work you’ve put into yourself and your career is finally paying off. Here’s how to rock the decade like a, wait for it, boss! (Well + Good)

This feminist hair salon even looks cool enough for this blog! (NY Times Style magazine)

Rituel de Fille, a California-based natural makeup brand, is new to me. But its won fans among professional makeup artists, so I’m adding it to my beauty bucket list. (Allure)

This week on the blog, I shared some great Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals I found. Hurry, there may still be some things left!

This month, I am doing National Photo Posting Month, a.k.a. #naphopomo, over on Instagram. This challenge involves posting at least one photo daily, and my photos will celebrate something I am thankful for. Stay tuned!

Black Friday/Cyber Monday Beauty Deals!

Cover F/X Glow Getter Set

Cover F/X Glow Getter Set

The turkey is carved, the pies are cooling, and Great Aunt Alma is already on her third scotch-and-soda (hold the soda). In other words, Thanksgiving 2016 is almost in the books. What’s next? Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping, of course! Don’t worry, I’ve found you some great beauty deals!

Cover F/X

From Thanksgiving Day through Cyber Monday, November 28, you’ll get 25 percent off on any purchase of $20 or more on coverfx.com. The discount is taken at checkout.

I have mentioned my love of Cover F/X Custom Infusion Drops on here many times. From Thursday through Monday, you can try the Radiant Skin Duo: deluxe samples of the Illuminating Primer and the Radiance Custom Infusion Drops (my fave), for just $10!

If you are into highlighting, or just want to get your glow on for holiday parties, check out the Cover F/X Glow Getter Set. (See pic above.) You get one full-size bottle each of the brand’s six Custom Enhancer Drops in a box set. From Friday through Monday, this $252 value is available for $185! And yes, it also qualifies for the 25 percent discount.

LUMIONskin

LUMIONskin Skin Serum and Skin Mist

LUMIONskin Skin Serum and Skin Mist

I have never heard of this brand before. But the Skin Serum and Skin Mist look like they can keep your skin feeling fresh during a long day of holiday shopping, or erase the traces of one too many at the office holiday party. (We’ve all been there.) From Thursday through Monday, get 20 percent off your purchase on lumionlife.com with the code TURKEY20.

DERM iNSTITUTE

DERM iNSTITUTE Cellular Rejuvenating Cleanser

DERM iNSTITUTE Cellular Rejuvenating Cleanser

A cleanser that gets rid of dirt and other gunk, and also hydrates skin and improves its texture? Yes, please! Buh-bye holiday party makeup! From Thursday through Monday, get DERM iNSTITUTE’s Cellular Rejuvenating Cleanser, a $70 value, for just $39 on diskincare.com with the code HOLIDAY39.

Tell me. Are you into battling the crowds on Black Friday or surfing the Web all weekend in search of an amazing deal? If we’re being honest, I’m not. Maybe some online shopping, but otherwise, I’ll wait until Thanksgiving weekend is over. In New Jersey, our malls get so crowded over the holiday weekend, the state police have to get involved. Not pretty.

This month, I am doing National Photo Posting Month, a.k.a. #naphopomo. This challenge involves posting at least one photo daily, and my photos will celebrate something I am thankful for. Stay tuned!

Makeup: Rose Gold

Some of my rose gold favorites!

My rose gold picks

I love rose gold anything, especially makeup. It’ll be perfect for all those holiday parties in a few weeks. After all, rose gold looks best with a little sparkle.

Here’s what I’m loving:*

Maybelline The Blushed Nudes palette. At nine dollars, this palette is great if you are a little shy about rose gold and not sure if it looks good on you. (target.com) Of course, if you want to go high end, Urban Decay’s Naked3 palette is a perennial beauty editor and blogger fave. (sephora.com)

NARS Dual-Intensity Eye Shadow in Europa. This soft rose gold is so pretty. If you want a deeper shade, NARS came out with a color called Rigel this fall. (nordstrom.com)

Downtown girls may be into ColourPop. Check out the brand’s eye shadows in Sequin and DGAF. (Hey, I didn’t pick the names.) They are only five bucks a piece! (colourpop.com) NYX Cosmetics Roll-On Shimmer in Salmon is a pretty take on rose gold, with a name you won’t have to lower your voice to repeat in public. (ulta.com)

I have been dying to try Urban Decay lipsticks forever, especially since they recently reformulated them, then had a big relaunch. So when I choosing a lipstick to include in this post, I went to Ulta and bought Ex-Girlfriend, a sheer, rosy shimmer. You can wear it alone or over a lip liner, or swipe it on over your go-to pink or beige nude lipstick. It’s like a highlighter for your lips that way. (sephora.com)

My favorite Essie nail polish of all time happens to be Buy Me A Cameo, a beautiful rose gold. It’s looks particularly good when I have a tan in the summer. I get it all year round, though. (target.com)

Are you as into rose gold as I am? Share your rose gold picks in the comments! And BTW, have you tried stuff from ColourPop? If so, I am curious about what you thought. It’s supposedly a hip, “It Girl” brand, and I want to know if I’m missing anything.

The #everydayphotoaday challenge over on Instagram rolls on. I am now officially an iPhoneography ninja!

*I bought the Maybelline Blushed Nudes palette, NYX Roll-On Shimmer, Urban Decay lipstick, and Essie nail polish. The NARS Dual-Intensity eye shadow in Europa was sent to me for my review. Opinions are my own.
