Makeup: Dia de los Muertos Makeup

A calavera de azucar (sugar skull)

La Calavera Catrina

I have been fascinated by the Instagram feed of makeup artist and face painter Judith Bautista, a.k.a. Kahlovera. Bautista is known for her makeup designs celebrating Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), a Mexican holiday that is also celebrated in some parts of Latin America on November 1 and 2.

If you are thinking of doing any sort of skull makeup tonight, or maybe you celebrate Day of the Dead, you may appreciate the tips and Dia de los Muertos backstory in this Allure blog post. Here are a few of my favorite pics from Bautista’s Instagram:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BMEpG9lDGQo/?taken-by=kahlovera

Anyway, if you read the Allure post, Bautista talks about Dia de los Muertos, and how it’s not supposed to be sad or scary, but actually a celebration of a loved one’s life. I think that’s great. When I think of the people I have lost in my life, such as my grandparents and my uncle, memories of the fun times we shared comfort me and keep me going.

You can find Bautista’s web site here.

Anyway, do you celebrate Dia de los Muertos? Who or what are you dressing up as for Halloween? Share stories and costume pics from the holiday in the comments!

The #everydayphotoaday challenge over on Instagram is basically over. (I just have to post a picture of my breakfast tomorrow. Well, OK.)

Fabulous Links of the Week

Boo! Are you ready for Halloween?

Boo! Are you ready for Halloween?

While I’ve been coming back to life after being sick, interesting things have been happening in the beauty world. So without further ado, men in makeup and two new nail art trends, in this week’s Fabulous Links!

The New York Times did a great story on male beauty bloggers. It featured my boy, Tim Owens, a.k.a. skelotim. If you have not checked out Tim’s Instagram feed featuring makeup inspired by junk food such as Cheetos and Candy Corn M&Ms, you are missing out! (New York Times) Here’s the Allure blog post that started it all.

I forgot to mention this sunglasses nail art trend last week. Of course it’s from South Korea. (Refinery 29)

Also in nail art news, scorpion manis are trending in Mexico. (globalnews.ca)

This week on the blog, I mentioned a few of my rose gold favorites.

The #everydayphotoaday challenge over on Instagram heads into its final week. Stay with me down the home stretch!

Makeup: Rose Gold

Some of my rose gold favorites!

My rose gold picks

I love rose gold anything, especially makeup. It’ll be perfect for all those holiday parties in a few weeks. After all, rose gold looks best with a little sparkle.

Here’s what I’m loving:*

Maybelline The Blushed Nudes palette. At nine dollars, this palette is great if you are a little shy about rose gold and not sure if it looks good on you. (target.com) Of course, if you want to go high end, Urban Decay’s Naked3 palette is a perennial beauty editor and blogger fave. (sephora.com)

NARS Dual-Intensity Eye Shadow in Europa. This soft rose gold is so pretty. If you want a deeper shade, NARS came out with a color called Rigel this fall. (nordstrom.com)

Downtown girls may be into ColourPop. Check out the brand’s eye shadows in Sequin and DGAF. (Hey, I didn’t pick the names.) They are only five bucks a piece! (colourpop.com) NYX Cosmetics Roll-On Shimmer in Salmon is a pretty take on rose gold, with a name you won’t have to lower your voice to repeat in public. (ulta.com)

I have been dying to try Urban Decay lipsticks forever, especially since they recently reformulated them, then had a big relaunch. So when I choosing a lipstick to include in this post, I went to Ulta and bought Ex-Girlfriend, a sheer, rosy shimmer. You can wear it alone or over a lip liner, or swipe it on over your go-to pink or beige nude lipstick. It’s like a highlighter for your lips that way. (sephora.com)

My favorite Essie nail polish of all time happens to be Buy Me A Cameo, a beautiful rose gold. It’s looks particularly good when I have a tan in the summer. I get it all year round, though. (target.com)

Are you as into rose gold as I am? Share your rose gold picks in the comments! And BTW, have you tried stuff from ColourPop? If so, I am curious about what you thought. It’s supposedly a hip, “It Girl” brand, and I want to know if I’m missing anything.

The #everydayphotoaday challenge over on Instagram rolls on. I am now officially an iPhoneography ninja!

*I bought the Maybelline Blushed Nudes palette, NYX Roll-On Shimmer, Urban Decay lipstick, and Essie nail polish. The NARS Dual-Intensity eye shadow in Europa was sent to me for my review. Opinions are my own.

Fabulous Links of the Week

One World Trade Center from Pier A Park in Hoboken

One World Trade Center from Pier A Park in Hoboken

iSick. I woke up with a stuffy nose on Tuesday morning and have been under the weather ever since. Cue the mint tea, Kleenex, and epic naps. That’s my excuse.

Moving on, Cover Girl names a Cover Boy, male beauty bloggers you might want to follow, and a great article by the great Cheryl Wischover about how (ahem!) Generation X (ahem!) is ignored by the beauty industry, in this week’s Fabulous Links!

Cover Girl announced this week that James Charles has been named its newest (and first male) brand ambassador! Congrats James! (Glamour)

On that note, here are six more male makeup artists/beauty bloggers to follow on social media. (Allure)

Cheryl Wischover’s piece about how Generation X has been sort of forgotten by the beauty industry is eye opening stuff. I have to agree with her: we’re over 40, not dead. And she mentioned Jenny Frankel and Nudestix! (Racked)

Do you think we, as a generation, have been dismissed by the beauty industry? I do, a little. Its nice to see over-40 spokesmodels like Julianne Moore, Halle Berry, and JLo, but brands do need to find a middle ground between body glitter and antiaging creams. Gen X has spending power, and we’re not afraid to use it! And do your children or grandchildren ever “borrow” from your beauty stash? Let’s discuss in the comments!

The #everydayphotoaday challenge over on Instagram continues. I have to say, I am really loving it and am starting to think (I think) like a photographer!

Fabulous Links of the Week: Columbus Day Edition

Happy Columbus Day!

Happy Columbus Day!

Cool Halloween highlighters, online beauty bargains from T.J. Maxx, Urban Decay’s 90s nostalgia, Walgreen’s beauty benefits program, and a cosmetics brand that pays homage to its founder’s Mexican roots, in this week’s Fabulous Links!

I forgot to mention these Halloween-themed highlighters last week, and they are really amazing. Get shopping before these limited-edition beauties are sold out! (Allure and etsy)

The new beauty section of the T.J. Maxx web site carries high-end brands at, wait for it, T.J. Maxx prices! (Bustle)

To celebrate its 20th anniversary, Urban Decay is re-releasing some of it’s original products from the 90s. Get ready to feel all of the feels! I love the lipstick in Bruise and the eye shadow in Shattered. (Allure)

Walgreen’s new Beauty Enthusiast loyalty program is here to give you points and discounts on all your drugstore beauty needs. (Bustle)

The new makeup line Reina Rebelde has a distinctly Latin flavor! Founder Regina Merson quit her job as a bankruptcy attorney to follow her dream. (Yahoo! Beauty)

I am doing the #everydayphotoaday challenge over on Instagram. This should be interesting! Hope you are having a great long weekend!

Fabulous Links of the Week

Hi-tech hair, a change in the beauty landscape at CVS, a compact sealed with a 3-D printed kiss, and beauty goodies that give back, in this week’s Fabulous Links!

L’Oreal announced this week that it has partnered with French firm Poietis to develop technology to bioprint hair follicles. This is great news for those with thinning hair! (U.K. Telegraph)

CVS is taking a cue from Sephora’s Beauty on the Fly section, and featuring more beauty loot near the checkout. (Fashionista)

Smashbox is celebrating the launch of 120 shades of Be Legendary lipstick by giving away a compact with a 3-D printed kiss on it! The color inside is a universally flattering red called Fireball. Want one? They are free with purchase on smashbox.com until October 31 while supplies last! (Refinery 29)

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month! How great are these beauty products that give a percentage of sales to breast cancer charities? I don’t know much about the prestige brand Le Metier de Beaute (except that it’s not cheap), but the Stephanie Breast Cancer Awareness Kaleidoscope is pretty cool looking. (Allure)

This week on the blog, I recapped my trip to Cuba and talked about Cuban beauty. I hope you have been checking out my Instagram for pics from my trip!
