Target Pledges Safer Beauty Products

I was going to include this news in last weekend’s Fabulous Links, but thought it was worthy of its own post. Retail Dive has reported Target announced ambitious plans to make its beauty and personal care products safer by 2020. Target will strive for greater ingredient transparency, as well. As if we need another reason to love beauty shopping at Target!

This new initiative applies to Target favorites like Sonia Kashuk and Pixi Beauty, and national brands, too. Jennifer Silberman, Target’s chief sustainability officer, told Allure, “We know our guests are becoming increasingly concerned with chemicals in products they use in, on, or around their bodies, and they trust us to provide better choices.”

Target is taking a multi-pronged approach with its initiative:

Transparency: Achieve transparency about all ingredients in product categories, including beauty and personal care, by 2020.

Chemical Management: Formulate beauty, personal care, baby care, and household cleaning products without phthalates, parabens, formaldehyde or formaldehyde donors, or nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs) by 2020.

Innovation: Invest $5 billion in green chemistry innovation by 2022.

Target’s safety and transparency plan comes at a time when the cosmetics and personal care industries have been rethinking their ingredient strategy. Last month, Unilever, parent company of brands such as Caress, Dove, and Suave, announced it would disclose details about the fragrances in its personal care products. “We are committed to ensuring people have the information they need to choose the right product for them. We believe that providing this transparency will help build further trust in Unilever and our brands,” David Blanchard, Unilever’s Chief Research and Development Officer, said in a statement.

The government is also worried about ingredient safety. In 2015, Sens. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Susan Collins (R-ME) introduced the Personal Care Products Safety Act, an amendment to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, which has not been updated much since 1938.

This legislation would require companies to register their manufacturing facilities with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and submit to the agency statements about the ingredients in their products and how much of each ingredient is in each product. The agency must also review the safety of five ingredients per year, and can set the standard for safe use of an ingredient.

Things have been a little busy in the beauty world, at least here in NYC: Ulta announced it is opening its first ever Manhattan location, and L’Occitane announced the opening of its new flagship in the Flatiron District. And Marcia Kilgore does it again with Beauty Pie, a buyers’ club catering to beauty junkies, while Unilever bought out Jennifer Aniston and the other owners of Living Proof.
